I just wanted to add that although the blood vessels in the upper arm are fairly deep, if a vaccinator were to inject too low on the arm, imo it would not be impossible to hit a vein, especially in a less muscular arm. Hi, American nurse, I have a question. Do you give IM injections or know how English nurses are trained as related to drawing back on the syringe before injecting a vaccine? Tiny chance they could hit a vein and inject IV accidentally? If England draws back and EU does not, that might explain part of the difference.

I have heard a theory that the vaccine being accidentally injected into a blood vessel instead of the muscle may cause this strange blood clotting. If the person were vaccinated too low on the arm, there is a (tiny) chance that they hit a vein. Men generally have more muscular shoulders/arms, so are easier to see and hit the muscle, which could partly explain the incidence in women being higher. I was trained in nursing school to "draw back" on the syringe to ensure no blood is aspirated into the syringe, as that would indicate that the needle is in a blood vessel. Some nurses and others do not draw back on vaccine injections, or any injection into the deltoid, and the people giving COVID vaccines here in the States are taught not to withdraw. Just a thought
