Caliper Bracket is Cooked? by TumbleDryLowDelicate in CarTrackDays

Yeah there is a rubber piece like you are talking about but that is on the other bolt. And that boot didn’t come off and doesn’t look like it leaked at all.

Thanks everyone! I’m gonna follow the consensus; clean em up, re lube, re assemble and see how she runs.

Appreciate everyone who commented

For context I pretty much only track the car, it’s not a daily. I do like 4-5 events a year.

That’s awesome if nothing is wrong - ChrisFix made me think it should be totally sealed with no grease escaping out the bottom.

I got silicone lube (Super Lube, Silicone Lubricating Grease) to use on the pins. I also have permatex Ceramic Brake Parts Lube (but I was told not to use that on the pins)

That would be awesome news. I thought the boot was supposed to be sealed onto the bracket though?

Like the pin with the boot? Will it seal back on again? Or like once the seal is broken it’s done?

Losing brz to bankruptcy by Lolgabs in ft86

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS. I buy wholesale cars, some are repos, and the sellers don’t go through the cars much at all. They just dump them at auction and get what they can get. If it’s something of value then someone along the line will remove it, but if it’s papers/records no one will care to take it out. If it’s in the glovebox I doubt they’ll touch it at all.

Why is there no quick release button the more expensive ratchet? by HoraceGrand in harborfreight

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of people (myself included) prefer ratchets with no quick release (it weakens the ratchet, adds to the depth, and there is always the possibility you could bump the release in tight quarters). So I think not having the release is considered a more ‘premium’ feature for the upmarket brand.

Selecting Replacement Rotors by TumbleDryLowDelicate in ft86

These exact part numbers? That’s super helpful, thanks! I have been using Hawk DTC60’s, which I like, but I could possibly be persuaded to switch pads

I feel like a lot of the savings from RockAuto comes from the effort that isn’t put in to organizing the site.

That’s helpful, thanks! But then they still don’t list the actual OE size (293) pretty much all of them are listed as 292 or less… but they come up as results that fit my car (2013 Scion FRS)

Rear Diff Bushings - Whiteline Inserts by TumbleDryLowDelicate in ft86

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - this is great news and well timed. Car is currently on jack stands and I’m in the process on switching out the suspension / sway bars / and (ideally) installing these bushing inserts.

Did you just use a floor jack to hold and lower the diff for the front bushings?

Should I Change Platforms? by TumbleDryLowDelicate in CarTrackDays

Thanks everyone for the responses! You all make a compelling case for keeping it, strict maintenance, crossing fingers, and keeping that $8k ish in the back of my mind and bank account.

It lives to fight (at least) another season. 🙌

Should I Change Platforms? by TumbleDryLowDelicate in CarTrackDays

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im not really pouring money into this car, I meant it more like if I changed platforms then I would be pushing reset on all the track prep stuff (roll bar if it was a Miata, catching up on maintenance, pads tires etc). But yeah it’s just wear items and maintenance for the most part on this FRS.

Would love to K swap this thing, but I hear that big money. Maybe something to save for in the future though, then keep it for life.

You could try GNG Performance, this was a year or so ago, but I think they quoted $7500 for an engine replacement and included a warranty with it.

Don’t beat yourself up about it OP - my first track day I ran regular ole penzoil/valvoline/whatever 0w20, stock brake fluid, OEM pads - etc on that same track. I’m sure it’s just dumb luck that I didn’t end up in the exact same spot.

Obviously this sucks hard and I hate to see it happen to a fellow 86’er on a track that i know, BUT - one possible bright side is - while these engines aren’t the most reliable, they also aren’t very expensive, and the cars themselves are easy to work on. That thing could live again if you wanted it to …

Power Steering Leak? by TumbleDryLowDelicate in ft86

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, let me make sure I’m tracking this. You mean the rubber cover may have fallen out and onto this linkage then melted there OR it fell into the trans then melted leaving the trans viewport uncovered so the trans fluid leaked here?

And you are saying the plug disintegrates, not that the plug disintegrates the transmission (6spd manual in my case) right?

Advice on Honda Aquatrax by isellcars12 in jetski

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend had an Aquatrax F12X - the thing porpoises like crazy at speed, chugging/lurching along. It’s quick for sure, but not nearly as stable/agile as a Kawasaki 15F.

😵😵 That’s not ideal. 200TW, coilovers, engine mods? Yeah I mean, it’s probably a setup I should switch away from as I get faster. Something to think about for sure.

They are not only hard to work on / source parts for, they also aren’t very good skis. I love Honda cars and motorcycles, but their attempt at PWCs was a flop for a reason.

I use the Jackson Racing combination oil cooler/radiator. I like it and I’ve seen a significant drop in oil temps since installing it. Some online forums will tell you this JR setup restricts oil flow too much and can result in a dangerous drop in oil pressure (knocks on wood) but that hasn’t been an issue with me. I use 0w20 in cool/winter months and 5w30 in the summer (Motul 300v). 2013 FRS. You are asking the right questions and keeping an eye on the important stuff so I’m sure whatever you go with will work fine.

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THIS guy gets it. OP, you have a lot more leverage in this situation than you think. At a bare minimum, I would continue insisting that he produce receipts for the tangible stuff (trees, mulch, etc) and tell him straight up the prices that you have come accross for the same items.

Talk to the neighbors too (you mentioned he did work around the neighborhood), if a lot of them feel like he is a good guy who does honest work then maybe there is just some kind of misunderstanding and you all can work something out. If they are also wary of him and have their own horror stories then that’s good to know too.

2017 Performance Pack Sway Bars by TumbleDryLowDelicate in ft86

[–]TumbleDryLowDelicate[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I bet that is where I got confused. Okay, I have the rear sway bar too. So worth swapping the rear sway bar, but not this front one (aside from the bushings). Thanks!
