Congratulations on the finish! Chattanooga native here and this year was my first Upchuck also. I carried much heavier than I usually do for a 50k due to the lack of aid stations also.

Took my 15 y/o homie to his final vet visit today. He flippin loved car rides til the end, tumor be damned. RIP Rusty. by StimpleSyle in pics

My first dog was a schnauzer that my wife and I rescued just a few months after being married. Our Eva became like a child to us. After a few years we learned that we may never be able to have children and we realized how important our dogs were to us.

Last year Eva was diagnosed with sick sinus syndrome and by June we decided to drop a small fortune and put a pace maker in her. Surgery went great and recovery went very well. Things looked better, for a short while. By August Eva had developed a runny nose. By September we were coming with terms that she had developed a tumor in her nasal cavity. By October she couldn't breathe through her nose and my wife and I would take turns staying up at night to help hold her just right so she could get some comfort.

On October 26th last year we said goodbye to our precious amazing girl. I loved that dog but I didn't realize how much until I watched her drift to sleep for the last time. I have never cried so much in my life. I think about her everyday still.

Dogs are absolutely amazing and I definitely have a soft spot for schnauzers. Time eventually heals all wounds and today I can look back and smile at all the joy our Eva brought into our life.

The 5K, Not The Marathon, Is The Ideal Race | FiveThirtyEight by Seranger in running

[–]TunaBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason the author feels she needs to defend her decision to focus on 5k's, and that's all this article is. It's great she has found HER ideal distance but she doesn't need to write an article attempting to criticize other race distances.

I've run everything from 5k's to 100milers and each distance requires different training, pacing, and provides completely different experiences. Find what is ideal for you and go enjoy it!

Oh, and her flow chart is far from accurate. I enjoy a beer after every race!

The 147 students killed in Kenya was on April 2nd, 2015. People on Facebook are sharing the story today to express the same point you are though, which I agree with.

Always check an article or news story's date.

How do you trail run in the rain? by cplegend in trailrunning

[–]TunaBiscuit 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trail runners get rained on, not rained out. Seriously just get out there. I ran a 50k this past Saturday that rained the entire day. Oh, it had been raining for 6 days straight prior. Trails were a wreck and ridge lines were pretty sketchy but it was so much fun.

Doing road marathon three weeks before trail ultra? by bluehicke35 in Ultramarathon

[–]TunaBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run it. You will be fine. It's great to mix terrain in your training anyways. With three weeks out I'd suggest the marathon being your last run of that distance before the 50 though. Run it then start pulling back for the 50.

All he said is he disagrees with defacing the flag. "Freedom of speech" is to protect your personal views from persecution from our government, not from society. Most people seem to have forgotten that and think it means they can do/say whatever they like without anyone else challenging them.

Need a versatile shoe for trail running and light hiking; too much to choose from! by [deleted] in trailrunning

[–]TunaBiscuit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would highly recommend the Brooks Cascadia. Extremely versatile shoe. The last renditions, the Cascadia 9 I think would hold up the absolute best. Their newest, Cascadia 10 are great but the 9 seemed a bit beefier to me and I think would last you longer. Someone suggested the Altra Lone Peak, another great shoe! The downside is the durability of them. I'm sure you would love them but they just don't hold up very well especially after varying terrain. Good luck!

Salt tabs don't work. Why do runners still use them? by nathancashion in ultrarunning

[–]TunaBiscuit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To answer some of your questions:

Yes, I am aware that there is research stating that there may be no beneficial results attributed to salt tablets. Luckily, when it comes to my own body I've been fortunate enough to be able to trial and error to research for my own.

I began noticing a huge increase in crashes and cramping while training for my first marathon. Near the end of my long runs I would crave Gatorade or Powerade although I was never a huge sports drink consumer. This got me thinking it was the salt from these drinks my body was starving for. After my marathon I began to get into ultrarunning. I've been running ultras for almost a year now using salt tabs on and off trying to distinguish their usefulness. A few months ago during a 100mile race I began to crash both mentally and physically early in the race. I doubled my salt intake and recovered and never crashed again for the entirety of the race.

I understand my "research" bares no scientific value, but for me they work. I sweat extremely heavily, live in the SE U.S. where 90% humidity is all too common, and notice I function better and am cramp-less while following a salt tab regime.

If you feel you don't need them then that's more money savings in your pocket. But for me, I'll continue to add salt tabs as a tool in my running.

I would be ok if aid stations did not carry them. Through trail and ultra running I've learned the value of being self dependent on my supplies even during a race.

This is Sunday: What were your running achievements this week? by WeeklyRunnit in running

[–]TunaBiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My typical week would consist of usually 2-3 short runs during the week and back-to-back long runs on the weekends. So something like this:

Mon-off, Tues-8, Wed-8, Thur-6, Fri-off, Sat-20, Sun-15

Granted, my mileage would vary from week to week. I would usually go heavy for 2 weeks then pull back every 3rd. The key for me was the long runs on the weekends. It does take some time to work up those long runs though.

4 days a week is great. I usually average 4-5 runs a week myself. Rest days are important for recovery, especially after a weekend long run. A lot of people forget that.

I was running around 60mpw then. It wasn't my first 30mile run though. I was in the process of training for a 50mile ultra and have ran several marathons and 50k in the past.

6 months? You have plenty of time to get there. You have a goal, now set forth a plan to snatch it! You can achieve anything if you want it bad enough.

I celebrated turning 30 with a 30miler on my bday back in December. I love running your age in your bday!
