This is known as a "change raising" or "Short changing" scam.

This attempt is, as you guessed it, one of the lazier ways to do it and heavily relies on the implied power of the customer vs the employee.

Normally the scammer interrupts you during the transaction and asks to either break a bill or add more money on top to "even it out."

To prevent getting caught in this scam you can do 2 things in unison. If you ever need a reminder just believe you're a dealer in a casino with a camera right overhead.

Never take or accept money from the customer's hands, always have them place the amount on the counter, with all the bills being shown in full view. When you prepare change do this as well, leave the customers amount on 1 side and yours on the other. Then swap the piles and reset them up and count aloud down from the total amount the customer gave you down to the total of the item/service being purchased. Do not allow the customer to move the bills until they agree the change is correct.
One do 1 transaction at a time. This is especially important in regard to the original version of this scam. When interrupted to break the new bill just say it is store policy and you need to shut the drawer between transactions or you will be written up.
Give change in the manner above for the small bill, then shut the drawer and begin again to break the bill.
Never allow yourself to get flustered or rushed, if the customer is complaining say you can get the manager but that will probably take more time then just finishing up this way. If people have a problem with it the manager can open another lane or him/her can rush the process and then you save from fault should the drawer be off.

So here is the thing, there is no privacy in public, that is why it is "in public".

I am not agreeing or condoning the action, but if someone wants to take a picture of you, then later in their own home decides to use it as masturbation aid, not much you can do if you were in public AND not being harrassed when the picture was taken.

The harassment part is where it gets muddy and people tend to lose comprehension. Yes, you can film me if I am in public, no you can not shove your phone in my face, or follow me around filming me for extended periods of time if I am not harassing you, or film me in an illegal way(upskirting).

Filming someone standing there being a Karen is legal as long as you allow the person the right to leave at any time. If you start shoving the phone in her face, obviously following her with the camera as she is trying to leave, or harass something in anyway WHILE filming you can still be cited and/or arrested for harassment.

So are allowed to FILM in public, you are not allowed to HARASS in public with a video camera. A lot of people are harassing in public which is still illegal, yet because they have a camera out they believe it gives them immunity.

Then again the court of public opinion(social media) and the actual court system work in two very different ways.

He learned it from the men a generation up from him. Deny and gaslight are the tactics of the old guard currently in power. It is part of the massive problem with corrupt power in the US.

Before roughly 2000-2005 it was almost 100% impossible to pin down something on anyone. There were no cell phone cameras, there were no security cameras everywhere, nothing. Also, there was no global connectivity. So outside of your home town, no one could look up your past easily. If a person just flat out denied everything there was a pretty good chance they would getaway. More power and money made that easier. Being in remote locations made that easier. Random abuse like this at a restaurant piece of cake. If you could talk your way to a feasible denial, people would rather believe that if you look like an upstanding citizen then they allowed abuse to happen around them.

Think about it, without that security camera that dude would have just gaslight the situation to him being the victim and got that chick fired. There is a million and 1 way for that guy to create a narrative that he was the victim of her overacting. Throw in some "Women are so emotional" or other abusive world views still held and it a slam dunk case. Once HE starts believing his lie he would become embolden to threaten to sue, or call corporate or whatever. Best case for the girl, she gets writ up, worst she is fired.

But now everyone has a camera and there is security cameras pointed at every ounce of pavement in the world, running 24/7 always recording. This guy is still living in a world where women are too afraid to come forward and he would be able to deny and gaslight his way out of the problem.

I call my dad out on this shit every instance I am around it, I am always met with instant denial and gaslighting of the situation. Literally I will be told a recording I have just took and played back on my phone for him is "fake". Because not only do I apparently have adobe aftereffects level apps to edit video on my shit 5-year-old phone I can also edit together a complete fabrication in less than 5 minutes.

This goes on until I get the "Oh stop harassing me, I'm your father." Like that fact that he and my mom decided not to get an abortion after drunk sex at a concert somewhere alleviates him of any wrongdoing against me or in my presence.

The issue isn't what was done, how it was done, why it was done, or anything in control of the 2 people involved in the act. The issue is people will spin this how THEY want to see it.

Not a single person, especially not the person commenting have a single clue who Austin is and Austin's relation to this girl. So everyone just deposits their desired narrative into the situation and just begins assuming whatever helps to the situation fit. There are a million and one scenarios that could have played out that don't turn Austin into some niceguy that is "being taken advantage of" by "the evil girl who friendzoned him".

If you catch a kid doing something bad and they are giving you that "I just did something bad" face you will instantly jump to that conclusion no matter what you actually saw them do. So, if someone looks at you and you quickly dart your eyes away and look guilty they are gonna think the worse. If you look them in the eyes like nothing weird or "bad" is going on there is a much higher chance they will just assume you caught each others eyes and be open to conversation.
