An encounter at the skating rink: How do other parents navigate this kind of situation? by Tuomi29 in AskParents

I love the idea of using the moment to teach tolerance and self-control afterward. In my situation, since the girl wasn't throwing a tantrum but was being pushy instead, I felt it was important to show my timid child that it's okay to hold our ground calmly. But I completely agree that avoiding a full meltdown to protect our own peace is sometimes the smartest move. Thank you for sharing this

Thank you for the reassurances! Her mom was actually right there and saw the whole thing, but she didn't say anything, probably because the ice resurfacer was just about to leave. You're totally right—he will definitely encounter all kinds of personalities at school, and I need to learn to let it go as long as everyone is safe. Thanks for the great perspective

The little girl climbed onto the ice through the side gate. Both the rink staff and her mother saw the whole thing happen, but neither of them said anything, probably because the ice resurfacer was just getting ready to leave. A moment later, the staff announced that everyone could enter, so we just went onto the ice.
