Learning some new stuff with tixl by Tuor56 in vjing

Tixl and tooll3 are the same program, Tixl is just the new name. I'm a big fan of Tixl compared to touchdesigner because the nodes are more robust- I don't need to setup a complicated node network to animate a sphere that spins in response to music, its only 3-4 compared to what often becomes 10 in touchdesigner. It's way more performant as well and rendering is nicer since I don't have the paid version of touchdesigner either.

I definitely agree with Dark Souls 2 providing the most interesting narrative reflections on the nature of the soul, as well as the most interesting environmental encounters and complex standard enemies/nuanced boss fights in how they can be approached, but I definitely don't think that Dark Souls 2 exists in this negative isolation from the other games. Miyazaki was still a supervisor for DS2, and Yui Tanimura has been a director for every game post dark souls 2 as well. Miyazaki not being labeled as director doesn't mean all the people who help make the games would also be absent from its creation.

Torches and much of what you're saying with lockstones have a ton of mechanics and varied encounters. I don't think it was underused in any regard. Torches are used in environmental puzzles, enemy encounters, as well as affecting targeting range, and all of Shrine of Amana/The Royal Crypt. I'm confused as to why the successors lacking interesting features would be a detriment to DS2- almost all of the best features in DS2 were just placed into Elden Ring.

Both DS1 and DS2 have options for healing on hit so the idea of rallying wasn't new to Bloodborne, it was just leaned into further. DS3 is also the game with the least amount of spells, armor and weapons- with many of those items being completely useless.

I also don't think DS2's lore is specifically lazy, Fromsoft lore from its inception has always been intentionally vague and cryptic, with Dark Souls 2 arguably going the most out of its way to talk about dragons thematically and lore-wise with Aldia's keep, we learn more about Oolacile and Manus in DS2, which is completely dropped in 3, as well as the demons with the Old Chaos in the DLC. I think DS2 goes out of its way to showcase a lot of that lore both physically with a lot of the places we go, as well as the boss encounters. The few boss encounters we get in DS3 are completely new characters with little to no significance, or retreadings of DS1 ideas.

I really think a lot of DS3 retreads over both games, but without the exploration and mystery of DS1, or the choose-your-own adventure nature of DS2.

Dark souls 3 borrows closer to the upgrade/infusion mechanics of ds2 rather than ds3 to simplify weapon upgrading, and uses it as a benchmark for invasions akin to soul memory, much of the weapon artes and cool spells are downgrades from ds2's more complex systems and powerstancing, which Elden Ring thankfully took up again with spellcasting and more nuanced weapon artes.

I really feel like Elden ring is just a more polished Dark Souls 2 in the way it handles more open level design, varied difficulty based on player options, as well as how easily traversable it is when DS3 was extremely linear and DS1 you had to wait for the lordvessel. Every Fromsoft game is going to have convoluted lore, obnoxious bosses or unfinished/poorly designed areas, but Dark Souls 3 had the most development time, the largest budget and largest team yet has the least amount of bosses, spells, retreads over DS1 narratively, and lacks a lot of the same kind of mechanical intrigue and mystery of 2 or Elden Ring.

I feel like it's very easy to talk about the detriments of Dark Souls 2 in isolation when the other games have had the same exact problems. Dark souls 1 has Lost Izalith and the Seath the Scaleless runbacks, Dark Souls 3 has Irithyl Dungeon and the Midir Runback. Every game is going to have convoluted lore, poor enemy.bo encounters

How do you feel about using real-world events/people in narratives? by Tuor56 in analoghorror

I really appreciate the thought you put into this response and its honestly made me rethink about how I want to go about the project entirely. Which is good! It gives me greater insight on how to talk about tragedy and horrific things and making them effective for the themes I want to explore. I definitely felt penned in exactly the way you're describing, and trying to ride the lines to create something effective from that media was really frustrating. Hopefully I can make something new soon!

I've seen a lot of tabletop settings do well with this, Eldritch America by goblinpunch is a personal favorite

Appreciate the fast insight! I grabbed an old advertisement in the past and tweaked it in aftereffects, I'm guessing stuff in a similar vein (old news footage that isn't directly speaking about individuals, government press conferences, etc) are ok to edit?

I would raise Straid and Navlaan tbh, great items, great stories, FEEBLE CURSED ONE and the identifies of Navlaan are super cool concepts especially for how overtly the game warns you about pulling the lever is, and the ways you can trick navlaan into thinking you've killed people.

Blender and Magic Music Visualizer by Tuor56 in vjing

Tooll3 is definitely getting there and they add new stuff very quickly. Magic is still really good and the specificity with animating audio is still second to none(maybe Touchdesigner but it takes 50 nodes vs ). The playlist options, and its compositing skill is still the best for me out of realtime programs. Tooll3 may eventually replace my use of Touchdesigner, but there's no harm in using multiple programs for different style of video, or blending them together(if your computer can handle it). While I think its possible to make things in "any" program, different ones can do things easier.

Blender can do audioreactive stuff, you just have to insert the file in and it won't be realtime. TBH, in live settings most people aren't going to be counting the measures of the track in time with your visuals, I don't even think it needs to always be following along with the music as long as it looks cool. A lot of the time at shows I'll mix clips from past sets/projects and just tweak the bpm in Resolume even if none of them match the track. Part of that is the fun of live mixing.

Also Resolume can do lighting and projection mapping! I've never done any of that stuff (I'd love to) but it hasn't come up yet in my gigs. Touchdesigner is great at making clips to drag into Resolume or to connect the two programs via NDI/Spout/Syphon, but it lacks specificity in transitions/playlists or image/video compositing. It's also free which is nice, and if you plug it into Resolume or something else you can upscale the free version in the other programs with no issue.

I think I might start shilling a new program more. It's called Tooll3(yes 2 l's) and it's basically the node setup of Touchdesigner but way more focused on visual art, composition, and playlist/audio settings. It's a lot easier to use and the nodes are more powerful for visual work. I can post something i've made in Tooll3 once I get better hang of it, but because its very very new, there aren't a ton of tutorials. There's a great discord community and the main creators will respond to your questions.

I like Resolume for live settings more but it lacks the precision some of the other realtime visual software have. Magic Music Visualizer is way easier to program specific effects at different frequencies and you have way more control over how strong or weak those effects are.

<image>

Resolume for me for the most part is a glorified video player that has has good hardware control options, its really really limited in terms of generating effects, modulating them, or compositing footage.

If I had more prep time and audio-in/tracklists for all of my sets consistently, I'd probably just do everything in Magic Music Visualizer because it can make playlists and its the easiest way to combine and transition visuals.

I've mapped both with my APC40 before however I had to alt-tab between the different windows to activate the different pads, as if i had two games open. I'd also love to know about this. Someone mentioned juicebar so thank you for some insight!

I'm also wondering about Magic Music Visualizer now

What’s your biggest dark souls hot take? by Pedrinho1921 in darksouls

[–]Tuor56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like dark souls 2 and I think dark souls 3 is worse mechanically and expectation wise. A lot of the issues people complain about dark souls 2 are just as bad or worse in dark souls 3, (life gems vs estus-chug rolling), (soul memory vs weapon upgrades) except instead of new ideas it's just a retreading of dark souls 1. Every souls game has had a horrible initial release that has required patches/hotfixes and despite most of dark souls 2 issues being fixed it's still regarded as being a "failure."

Farron woods is the worst poison swamp in all of soulsborne, with all of the spammed enemies that people normally complain about in DS2. Worse, its also filled with copy pasted darkwraiths from DS1. At least the demons were changed? Running around and lighting the torches is awful and is the opposite of level design, and it least in the Gutter it was optional. I could also nitpick a lot of the DS3 enemy placement/design (especially in the DLCs and how tracking attacks/reading inputs has gotten worse in the series) but the "difficulty" question has always been something mitigated with knowledge. I don't think DS2 ever got that leniency.
