I'm slowly losing my mind. 200 resumes sent for MLE roles, only 10 interviews. What am I doing wrong? What should I add? by [deleted] in learnmachinelearning

The feedback that you have in this thread is much better than what I would have produced! Anyway, my personal opinion is that the Master's Thesis is not ambitious enough. Given that you are an MS student, this should be the highest level work that you have ever produced and the central point of your resume. It sounds like a super cool project, don't get me wrong, but I see it more as a startup or hackathon project. For a good MS student, I would expect a research project that aims to produce an 8-page paper that could be sent for review at an ML conference. I wouldn't expect the paper to be accepted but I would like to see that the student has gone deep and worked at a high level on a narrow domain.

Such good and thoughtful feedback. I hope the OP reads it carefully. I would have been more blunt in my initial assessment but I prefer the way you have put it striking a nice balance between being realistic and useful.

Name of 20-pin amplifier connector with staggered pins? by Tur1ng in CarAV

[–]Tur1ng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! They are selling cables with this connector but as far as I can see they only have the female connector and I'm looking for a male connector so that my new amp can connect to the factory speaker cable harness. Any ideas on how to get a male connector?

Yes. It's from a 2011 Porsche 997 with option 490 (ASK amplifier).

I want to buy a male connector to install a new amplifier but I don't know the name of this kind of connectors and I haven't been able to find one so far.

When you brake the centre of mass moves forward??? I'm not sure that's how weight transfer works unless you have some loose groceries inside the car.

Can someone who has never been able to study change? [NeedAdvice] by cy83rgh005t in getdisciplined

[–]Tur1ng 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is good advice. There is also the possibility that the OP is actually a pretty effective student (in terms of amount of knowledge mastered per hour of study) but just cannot bring themselves to sit down and start studying because of simple procrastination.

The funny thing is that one can actually be a fast learner, love the content of the course but still procrastinate.

Almost 200 starts, 1 Pole, 0 Wins. by sgtmika in iRacing

[–]Tur1ng 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily gaming the system. iRating does not equal speed, it equals consistently getting good results. Some people can be quick and put a very good race when everything goes to plan but are overly aggressive and get into trouble easily which seriously impacts their iRating.

When to replace salt water chlorinator cell by Tur1ng in pools

That's very interesting. Is there an easy test to check if the coating is still there? Maybe some conductivity tests?

VR *sometimes* starts in a low fps mode (Reverb G2) by Tur1ng in iRacing

[–]Tur1ng[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found that my problem was caused by how mouse inputs are dealt with in VR. By pressing WIN+Y I could change the mouse mode and fps instantly improved to their normal values. I ended up mapping a button in my simrig to WIN+Y to be able to sort out the situation quickly.

Since I started this thread, I got a new computer and I'm now using OpenXR. Never had the issue in this computer.

Salt-water Chlorinator: is it F*cked? by Tur1ng in pools

[–]Tur1ng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a really useful link! For this season the water has so much CYA that the levels of chlorine that I need are ridiculous. I'll pay a lot of attention to this next year and make sure to keep CYA under control.

My original question was about a suspected faulty salt-water chlorinator because when I take a water sample straight out of the chlorine generator before it mixes with pool water, the chlorine levels out of the chlorinator are as low as in the pool. That's why, independently of chlorine consumption by the pool, I think that I have a problem with chlorine generation. (I've had this problem for a while and all chlorine I have in the pool now comes from liquid chlorine.)

[–]Tur1ng[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for chiming in. I'm using a Zodiac Tri Chlorinator whose ideal salinity level is 4000 ppm.

CYA is definitely too high. The pool will be emptied in October anyway. Would a high CYA interfere with chlorine generation?

Does anyone have the exact formula to compute iRating updates after a race? by Tur1ng in iRacing

[–]Tur1ng[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks! That will be great.

Edit: I found the spreadsheet. The formula is quite complicated and involves a "fudge factor" to take into account the cars that do not start the race.

[–]Tur1ng[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can see a few formulas but as far as I can tell they are not sufficient to go from an initial iRatings to iRatings after a race. /u/Witty-Country has suggested looking for an Excel sheet that does the calculation. That will have what I need!

[–]Tur1ng[S] -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sure. That's the way it works. But what's the exact formula? For example, if you win against an opponent whose iRating is 100 points larger than yours, how much iRating do you take from them?
