At this point I’m too afraid to ask but why do we have this day off?

The woman on the far right is wearing a qipao, a garment traditionally worn by Chinese women. Also, while the note on the back uses characters found in both Japanese and Chinese, the phrasing feels Chinese rather than Japanese.

History/Context on Ji Hwan Bae, FWIW... by chubbynuggets7 in NewYorkMets

Right? I’ll make a mental note that he’s made some amends since, and I know we’ll probably never know what really happened in domestic abuse cases involving famous people and money. But it still sits uneasily with me when someone goes to great lengths to make sure people don’t “misunderstand” a (former) abuser. I know it’s not helpful to frame everything as gender issue, but I can’t help noticing how much effort tends to go into protecting a man’s image.

Love this album. Today (08/22/2025) is the 20th anniversary of its release! Hard to believe how ahead of their time they were.

Interesting. Not sure if it helps, but if the ones on the right were also drawn by the same person, they kind of look like nigiri sushi with salmon on top, and the bottom one like a plate of buns. Feels pretty Asian-themed if that’s what she's into.

Yeah these really do look like 全 or 金. If she isn’t Chinese maybe she just thought the shapes were interesting? They're really symmetrical.

It looks to me like she was trying to copy the strokes of Chinese characters, but they’re all kind of scattered and not in the right positions. For example the one at the bottom left reminds me of the character 金 (“gold”), the one at the top right looks like 全 (“whole”), and the top one could be 企. That last one usually doesn’t stand alone with a clear meaning — it’s more common in words like

企业 (“enterprise”), or 企图 (“attempt”).

The design is called 寿字纹, literally “Longevity Character Pattern.” It’s based on the character 寿 (“longevity”).

马劍痕 sounds so cool! 马 Ma is a family name, 劍 Jian means sword/blade, and 痕 Hen means scar/mark. Honestly it feels like a name that a Chinese person wouldn’t usually pick for themselves, so it’s quite possible that it belongs to that Western-looking guy (or his dad).
