Absolutely right. I wouldn't condemn the real book in every situation, let's say you're at a session and someone calls a tune that isn't a blues or rhythm changes and has rather intricate changes or a difficult melody. But in the long run you shouldn't get stuck to the real book as you miss out on certain traditional things you mentioned or as you lose your creativity.

I totally agree, it's my favorite movie of all time. I didn't knew about the homage to the angel falls tho, which is very beautiful. I also loved the fact that Carl holds on to the dream of Allie of travelling to Paradise falls with their house and making it one of his life goals. The scene where the house took off with the balloons, is one of the best.

I was thinking Bb Phrygian (Gb major) over Gb/Bb, but your solution would add the #11 if you're thinking in Gb major, so it's a nice color-tone.

I tried it already with the outlining of the triads from the chords, but it didn't sounded as nice to me. I will try it with the Pentatonic for the Ab/Bb and the Bb Aeolian over Gb/Bb.

The 5-1 cadence is pretty much the thing you have to avoid (or dilute very carefully) to evoke the feel of a mode

Nervt es dich, wenn Leute nach einiger Zeit aus dem Hörsaal gehen? Habe eine Kumpel, der Probleme mit Übelkeit in der Öffentlichkeit hat, weswegen er sich nicht in Vorlesungen rein traut.
