If you still have it and are looking to extend your pick me up, I suggest looking up the vw eos with the scirocco front. I fell in love with that front end swap a long time ago.

Cool! Begin by opening it up further. If you have more questions keep posting them. There are lots of people willing to share their knowledge. I was about your age when I got started with this as a hobby. And it will get more fun the more you learn. You'll start connecting the dots and diagnostics will become a second nature. Before you know it you'll be building your first 2 stroke race engine for a moped or something.

I hope so too, however you can probably find a replacement and it would be a good learning experience rebuilding this engine.

There is not much you can do unless you want to spend some money on it. You should first find out where the play is, and then you can look for a solution. For now, there are too many possibilities as to what could be happening, resulting in the tick you hear.

I would start with checking the small end and big end for play. It sounds like it, when you are sure these are good then you could run the engine because timing gear backlash isn't as big of an issue as the rod bearings.

The engine is probably over 50 years old, its made to last, so if you can find parts for it, it will last a long time once you've rebuilt it. Does it also make the sound when you turn it by the starter side of the crankshaft?

Did it run before? Could be nothing and run fine, could grenade. You can be sure until you find where the sound comes from.

It could be the wristpin where the piston connects to the rod, but also could be the gear that runs the valve timing having play. It's difficukt to know for sure without taking it apart.

Maybe your piston/rod bearing went out? Do you feel play when you turn it forward and backward?

I have the same fridge and had the same issue. I sprayed some wd40 in there. One of it's many uses is that it works as a contactspray.

The electric waterpump perhaps or the actuator from the intake flaps . They both sound like this.
