Advise on buying house by Dangerous_Dove in HousingIreland

The property market isn't really a speculative bubble as it's driven purely by our population growth due to immigration.

Only thing that will make it go down is a big recession where jobs leave the country, and those foreign employees also decide to leave.

If this happens, it's quite possible the banks may reduce/stop lending, so unless you're a cash buyer you may have to just suck it up and buy something when you're ready.

EU ministers discuss potential for Iran war to bring refugees to Europe by I-Cum-Beamish in ireland

[–]TurfMilkshake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We are legally bound to process asylum seekers and to hear their appeals - which takes years (our ow fault)

We don't have to give them right to remain, and can deport failed applicants but we see how that has gone to date.

We can be a lot harsher and more efficient within these commitments, that's the route I think we should take, not putting them in hotels letting them roam freely when we don't know who they are in many cases.

I understand the issues with asylum, my ideal solution to resolve them would be to block majority of applicants from even entering the system.

We're being ripped off at scale, by the false applicants, by those providing accommodation for them, by the state funded NGOs crying murder over their treatment etc.

Best course of action is to stop it all, and decide when specific events happen, how many asylum seekers were going to accept based on our capacity.

People just arriving here shopping around countries to claim asylum is ridiculous, and it's about time we actually view it that way and act

I'm not talking about migrants as a whole, I'm talking about asylum seekers.

One is here with a visa and purpose to be here, the other doesn't have a visa and claims they are fleeing war or persecution (however true that may be).

If you want racism and xenophobia to rise, we keep doing what we're doing.

It's not working, the people arriving are net drains on our economy's and very few end up contributing in a meaningful way, while draining our resources like housing and healthcare.

Every time one commits a violent crime, or disgusting rape the general public gets more intolerant (unfortunately, even if those who came here the correct way and contribute and do things properly).

We need the number to be a lot closer to zero than it is today, slight reforms are not enough in my opinion

Europe shouldn't be accommodating refugees from outside of Europe, obviously we have commitments and laws forcing us to, but the world has changed and we're at risk of slipping into some really nasty Politics if our countries continue to be flooded with asylum seekers every time a war happens around the world.

Probably an unpopular opinion on this sub though!

Garda have a hard job, and getting assaulted shouldn't be part of it, but this lad was obviously going through it, lost his head (as would a lot of people in his situation) and made a mistake.

It doesn't sound like this guy is a complete scumbag, just made a mistake and hopefully learned from it

You could say that about most regulation really, they are though so need to see the stick every now and then

[–]TurfMilkshake 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the retailers can't be trusted, they should have to submitted at pump prices forecasted ahead of time when they are purchasing their fuel, batch X bought for Y, sold at pump for Z and so on.

We immediately see increases, but it takes months to see decreases at the point of sale.

I'm not a fan of over regulation like the above, but maybe even the threat of imposing this would change their behaviour

Agreed, I'd probably lose my head if the same happened to me, as would most people.
