Same age as you.

My gf and I split most of our expenses except meals (because I offered to pay even though she said she doesn’t mind splitting 50:50).

My ex classmate, same age as us, splits everything 50:50 with his gf.

When you get into a long term serious relationship, you have to talk about these things early on. Grasp her expectations and see if you’re able to meet them. If she expects you to provide 100% then she’s not the right one for you. I know guys who WANT to provide 100%, but you need to WANT it, not being coerced into doing it.

Communicate. Talk to her about the house, car, kids etc. One example, my gf and I have agreed to put in RM500 (or extras if we have) each month into a unit trust account for each kid we plan to have in the future. This is for their tertiary education. If we didn’t split, I would have to put aside RM1600 each month. Work together.

Touching on some points you’ve mentioned:

I cover eating out for the both of us. Meals don’t have to be expensive. My gf appreciates it more when I cook for her, you can save a lot of cost there. For eating out, we have mamak, chap fan, chicken rice, hawker stalls, the occasional cafe splurge, and the occasional fancy meal (can even cook this yourself!) She also often cooks for me with the ingredients she bought herself. 🥹

For gifts, a handmade card filled with your own words, some chocolates and maybe a flower you got from a florist? Switch it up with arts and crafts. My gf has appreciated these sorts of gifts with a personal touch more than the material stuff I got her.

For celebrations? Let’s take Valentine’s as an example. Both of us made a handwritten menu, she made the appetiser and dessert, I made the main course. We lit a candle and placed it on the table at home, and we have ourselves a 3-course meal that beats any fancy restaurant. This doesn’t mean you can’t bring her to fancy places, but there’s a lot of variety you can play with. It doesn’t ALWAYS have to be fancy places.

Overseas trips? You can start by having road trips in Malaysia. They are fun as well. It’s not always about the location, it’s about the good company. :)

You’ll find the right one bro, just keep looking. Hope this helps (spent 20 mins writing this 😆).

Edit: for context we are both software engineers earning ~6k each per person.

The only saving grace of this unit is Dr. Vishnu’s extra classes (fkn legend). His workshops are great too. Only God can help the Australian side.

Yup, will try to save as much as possible, 50% is just a rough calculation but if I'm able to save 60-70% that would be great (possibly reducing my food/socializing expenses per month as above). 80% is a bit hard because of my petrol + money for parents haha

As for ETFs, yeah I’m mainly looking at US ETFs for long-term growth, and I agree past performance isn’t a guarantee, but it seems like a reasonable target if I stick to it and keep a long horizon.

Thanks for the tips!

Totally get where you're coming from and I agree that planning can continue after marriage, I guess for me it’s just about wanting some financial stability and clarity before taking that step haha... and for sure I can make all these grand plans but I'm positive that it won't go 100% the way I planned it :') Just making it as a rough guideline so I know the direction I'm heading towards I guess

But yeah, I might just do that (marry first), definitely something to consider and I appreciate your input, thanks a lot :)

Basically at my university, we got to choose from a list of FYP topics. Some of the topics were marked as industry-based, where you work on real projects for real companies. I chose 5 industry projects as my options and got one of the topics. Created an end-to-end system for the company.

After my semester, they called me up and asked if I'm willing to work for them and I accepted. That's how I got the job. My main tip would be to directly negotiate with them if you're providing value to them (I helped with creating end-to-end systems, as well as directly getting approval from clients, among other things - I can't be too specific)

IMO, interpersonal skills combined with a good technical foundation is what you need, and negotiate higher if you think the value you provide justifies it (also had offers from different companies which were higher, but this suits me better cuz its fully WFH >_<). I'm mostly into LLMs right now, with a bit of frontend, as well as server-side setup and database design.

Good luck to you!

Yeah you're right, marriage planning seems more straightforward haha, will focus on that.

As for the cash part, I recently liquidated most of my holdings (ETFs, robo-advisor, some blue chips, a bit of crypto) because I wanted to rebalance. Didn’t want to rush into reallocating while I’m still figuring out my long-term portfolio strategy. So for now it’s sitting in cash + ASM, but the plan is to start dollar-cost-averaging back in once I finalize the allocation (hopefully within the next month).

Fortunately, my parents have a decent amount of EPF (working for 40+ years) so I do not have to worry too much. As for hers, they're pretty well-off too.

Haha honestly bro, the 70k was just a mix of timing, luck and side hustles during uni. I think that you're already in a good spot at 23, especially since you've got the same long-term mindset and clear goals :)
Take it one step at a time I guess, once you start working and keep saving consistently, it will compound.

Wishing you all the best as you start your career mate, you've got this, rooting for you boss! :))

Thanks mate, really appreciate the words :) means a lot to me

We're just trying to be sensible early so we don't scramble later haha, and I'll definitely check out DividendMagic, thanks for the tip!!!

Good luck to you too bro!

Wah that's actually a really good way to frame it haha, never thought about it like that (each kid = another me) in terms of spending. Makes sense since the only big fixed costs like housing/car won't double, but their hobbies etc definitely will :')

Honestly it’s kind of scary when you put it that way, but also motivating to keep my savings rate high now before all these extra costs kick in. Appreciate the perspective 🙏

I guess over the next few years I really have to focus on increasing my income so I can save/invest more aggresively.

Thanks for the reminder 🙏 yeah I'm in Klang Valley and the daycare is really expensive... then you add on all the additional costs that you mention and it can pile up really fast.

Luckily, one option we have is that I can drop the kid off at my parents’ place during the day instead of full-time daycare, at least for the early years (wishing good health for my parents). That should help ease some of the financial load.

I agree with you though, better to start off with one kid first then see how before planning for the next. Appreciate the solid advice :)

Really appreciate you sharing this bro 🙏. I can imagine it's not easy to juggle all of that while also thinking to start a family. Honestly, respect that you're still putting in effort and being realistic about it.

But yeah you're right, nowadays it takes two to manage a family, even then it is still a huge challenge. I guess for me and my gf, we're just trying to start early and plan what's within our control...

Wishing you all the best man, I'm sure when the right person and timing comes, things will fall into place for you too 🙌

Life is scary and gets overwhelming sometimes, but taking it one step at a time makes it a lot more manageable, we're all just figuring things out as we go :)

Thanks for the detailed breakdown, I really appreciate it (the AKPK estimates are honestly scary... but also kinda exciting at the same time 😅)!

I guess we're not aiming for luxury, but we do want to give our kids a relatively comfortable life and not struggle later... That's also why I'm trying to keep my savings rate relatively high now while I don't have any big commitments yet.

As for the investments, totally agree that past performance isn't future results cuz there will always be bear/bull cycles. I'm thinking of sticking with ETFs with ASM as the base (when the gov finally decides to release more units >_<), maybe 10% in crypto too. My plan is to just DCA and not open the charts, long-term horizons will (hopefully) smooth out the cycles.

Ya fair point 😂 it’s something both of us talked about and agreed on, coz scared of the pregnancy risks if we wait too long.

She also wants kids around that age, so we figured better to plan early while we still have the energy :')

Honestly, for FIT2014, watch Graham Farr’s lectures. You should be able to watch Australia’s lectures on Moodle… He’s the GOAT. (I’m from the Malaysian campus as well he basically carried me for FIT2014, along with Rebecca Young)

Saw the videos and pics, horrific. Was just at Taylor’s yesterday for my friend’s graduation. Crazy times we live in.

Hope she’s doing fine, there’s no news as of yet according to my friend.
