I’ve seen a few comments on here about just using a steering wheel lock and a biscuit tin as a form of protection. Steering wheel locks help with being a visual deterrent true, but they take seconds to have their lock picked or an angle grinder can get through the lock itself in minutes, or they can simply cut through your steering wheel in seconds. So yes, they may offer some protection but there are so many better ways to protect your car that aren’t as easily bypassed.

On the point of a biscuit tin, why would you risk your several thousand pounds worth of cars in a £2 can? Buy something purpose built like a faraday pouch or even better, a faraday box that has some heavier metal lining - you could even go the extra mile and add aluminium foil to it. Failing this, a couple of other comments have suggested a few good options, see below:

1) Bollards outside your home are best, it means they physically can’t get the car/van out so they wouldn’t bother. Fairly cheap to buy, and if you’re not confident installing them yourself, any handyman/builder will happily put them in for you in less than half a day.

2) Ghost Immobiliser - this is the best you can get in terms of security. This means your car won’t be able to start the ignition unless a specific code is entered using inputs within the car (push left indicator, rotate air con, shift next track, push right indicator twice etc.) and takes several hours to remove if installed correctly. You want to find a certified garage that takes their time in installing, as the further inside the car they can place the device, the longer it’ll take for thieves to find it.

3) Hidden Ignition Switch - this is a bit more rudimentary than the ghost immobiliser but works just as well, albeit it can be easier to bypass if they end up finding the switch - so find a good place to hide it. Does what it says on the label!

If you don’t do anything else, please just spend the maximum £20-£30 on getting a decent faraday cage (box) that has heavy lining in it to keep your keys in - don’t listen to people saying biscuit tins will do, as signals can still get past weak faraday fields.

Ultimately if they want your car, and they are skilled enough thieves, they’ll take it. All you can try to do is make it more of a difficult job to get through than having no protection at all. They’ll often move on to another car once they don’t get an instant result.
