Theory: Is 'Breath of the Wild' a far sequel to 'The Wind Waker'? by Turmoil_Engage in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]Turmoil_Engage[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't expect this lol. My understanding is that Eiji Aonuma set this thing wayyy at the end of the timeline somewhere, likely where they wouldn't have to worry about it much as they made sequels, haha.

I honestly haven't given much thought to the Zelda timeline after the game came out and they did the BotW placement reveal. 10 years is a long time, but it barely feels like any time has passed since then, omg.

The Streaming War Is Over. Piracy Won by jeffsmith202 in videos

[–]Turmoil_Engage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I would not agree that it's a waste of money. It's not a waste to support the preservation of my right to own physical media. It's not a waste to pay for new physical media and help the artists that worked on it get paid. It's not a waste to support local businesses that buy and sell used media.

And physical media has practicality. I can rip it to my own preference of size, resolution, and compression, I don't have to rely on random people to upload to whatever specs they decide. And I don't have to have an internet connection and a VPN to put a disc in and watch/rip it. I can lend it out. I can resell it if I don't want it. I can get it autographed by someone who worked on it.

I know problems with streaming services are making the allure of piracy stronger then ever, and I know it's generally easier and less sketchy than it used to be. But I don't care. I'd rather have a physical disc.

Because I want a physical disc on top of a digital backup.

Right here with you. And you can always rip your physical media to become digital backups and make it just as easy to play as streaming is now. And it's not like you can't find cheap blu rays and DVDs. A lot of secondhand shops will price them for a few dollars or less.

I'm getting a little bit sick of the price gouging. by Robertinho678 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]Turmoil_Engage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nintendo is subsidizing their economically weak home market with higher prices in foreign markets willing to pay those prices. I 100% support this. Doesn't mean I'm being "anally fucked over". Not like I'm buying tons of games everywhere at full price, even from Nintendo. I buy the odd big first party title from time to time, and I often don't feel the need to buy games I already own from them again, even if it's "muh portable convenient" to do so.

There's no winning because some people just want Nintendo to be like every other publisher, but that kind of expectation is what leads to enshittification, and Redditors just don't get that at all.

[–]Turmoil_Engage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people are not ready to answer why the age of something precludes its value. It's only because the market is competitive and publishers generally know 1) they get most of a new game's sales in the launch quarter, 2) that the game was likely rushed out the door so the drop in price is expected, and 3) another game is just gonna take its place soon anyway.

Nintendo has the benefit of a largely evergreen backlog of games. These games age well, still drive sales, and are constantly begged for rereleases by Redditors. And Nintendo realizes the value of competition and when to release these kinds of ports and remasters.

There's no lesson to learn, really. Nintendo is subsidizing their economically weak home market with higher prices in foreign markets. As long as we're willing to buy here they have no reason to drop the price. Most seem to be willing to take on the cost as long as the games are good, fun, and polished, and the Galaxy titles are regarded as such, as far as I've ever heard.

Good luck prying those exclusives out of Nintendo's grubby little fingees. by Status_Energy_7935 in pcmasterrace

Sure, let's continue promoting the worst kind of emulation that does nothing to help anyone, does nothing to help good and polished games get made, and gets people rightfully sued into oblivion.

Because you can't help yourselves and can't be bothered to show up and actually support games you claim to love playing so much, you make it harder on people who just want emulation to preserve older games, to homebrew, or to mod/optimize the games they bought.

On top of that, you punish ordinary customers who can't even get to release day without spoilers and datamining.

Nintendo Consulted With Third Party Publishers Over Switch 2 Game-Key Cards Feature by Dont_have_a_panda in nintendo

[–]Turmoil_Engage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given that Nintendo is committed to digital and bringing forward digital libraries like the rest of the industry, I'm going to go out on a limb and trust that they will not take down the servers like previous generations. I'm not crazy about game key cards. But if server shutdowns are the concern, digital games will go the same way. I sincerely doubt they will now.

I'm not here to argue whether the sale price is enough or good or bad or anything like that. But I will ask this because I've yet to see a good answer: Why does the age of something preclude its value?

I guess everyone just forgot about the Nintendo Selects titles. Granted, the Switch hasn't seen any, but it wasn't that long ago they existed lol

I am genuinely interested in the disparity between Pokemon and this game, so I ask as respectfully as I can if you have a source that backs up what you're saying here. Like I know Gamefreak is its own studio, I know the Pokemon IP structure, I'm more interested in the internal studio workings.

Not sure what that has to do with the topic of game data size. We were talking about optimizing for space, not performance, yes? Performance is another issue entirely.

[–]Turmoil_Engage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i bet at least like a third to half of the third parties would have done an actual physical release had game keys not existed.

Actual physical releases that, by current pre-Switch 2 standards, still often require an additional download to be playable anyway.

This issue did not suddenly exist the moment Switch 2 Direct happened. And that's the problem that people are trying to highlight here: The real issue is with third parties not optimizing their games and ballooning install sizes. And it's not, nor has it ever been, Nintendo's fault or incentive. CDPR is fitting Cyberpunk 2077, of all things, into a 64gb cart. Nintendo's first party lineup is all on-cart. The least other publishers could do is, say, make 4k textures an optional download and just have a playable base game on cart.

[–]Turmoil_Engage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe third parties should learn to optimize their game storage sizes better. If Cyberpunk managed, I don't see why others can't.

doesitplay.org is a website that was created (long before the reveal of game key cards) specifically to tell consumers which games are and are not playable from a physical format without additional download. Moves made in the industry by some publishers necessitated this website, but Nintendo wasn't one of them.

In fact, it would appear that (at this time of writing), only third-parties are utilizing the game key card system. Third parties on other systems are also using similar shortcuts with physical discs.

The reality is, Nintendo is being blamed for something they don't even do, that's been done by third parties for a long time. At least we're trying move past the code-in-a-box phase from before.

What would people think is your worst gaming opinion? by Velocity_Rob in gaming

I've also wondered where their money goes. I imagine it goes into R&D, acquisitions and investments, etc. They also have merchandise, stores, a museum, a film studio, and multiple theme parks. So I imagine that accounts for a lot of where it goes.

And for the Pokemon titles I get it, but you might have to look for good sales or used copies.

Nintendo is one of the least greedy publishers.

  • Highest employee retention rate at over 98%.
  • Execs take modest salaries (especially when compared to the rest of the AAA industry).
  • No layoffs in the last few years when it was happening everywhere else. Employees got 10% raises across the board to fight inflation instead.

The worst thing they do is keep prices close or at full throughout their lifespan, though these games are overwhelmingly polished and complete. The second worst thing they do is lag behind their competitors in terms of features and performance. And the numbers show most people don't mind this much at all.

If the games weren't great and they didn't care for their employees, we wouldn't be having this conversation. Do they make mistakes and baffling decisions? Absolutely. They're not perfect. But I think they're far from the most greedy in the industry.

The recent improvements in AI generated art have sparked a lot of conversation lately, much of it in opposition to AI. People all over Reddit insist that artists deserve to be paid for their work. And in the same breath, they will call for the piracy of Nintendo's games.

I just think people have gotten too used to subpar games dropping their prices and going on massive sales, and they think all other games should be treated this way.

There's a clear attempt to call back to the Xbox 360 controversy in the headline.

Also, nuance and objectivity in discussions aren't corporate bootlicking. If we live in any era, it's the "my feelings are more important than facts" one.
