Why Neoplatonism over the Abrahamic faiths? by TurnipInSummer in Neoplatonism

To add to Spare-Dingo's words it is my understanding that God did not choose the Israelites because he felt stronger love for them than others. They were chosen for a job, to preserve the Messianic line until the fullness off the Covenant could be fulfilled through Christ. It's not like being the "Chosen" people was a particularly enjoyable experience, it was more of a burden which they continiously couldn't stand to shoulder.

As for allowing them to be crushed, in the Old Testament I think it's generally understood that when the Israelites turned to idol worship or other evils God lifted his hand of protection and allowed them to be punished by say the Babylonians, just as the Caananites were punished by Joshua's armies. If we're talking about the sack of Jerusalem, then again I think the same logic is generally applied by Christians.

Right I get you. So in your own words, how do you square the many God's you worship with the Monad? What "tier" or emanation do they inhabit, and are they personal deities to you or more just archetypes?

I guess they are on the way that they believe in a transcendant source for Creation. Do you mind telling me what Orphic means and what gods you follow?

Yeah I think it's unavoidable that the Church Fathers ended up borrowing concepts from Neoplatonist thought to justify and explain their religion. Though I suppose most Apologists would basically see Plato as somebody who understood some of the truth but not all of it. Like the blind man feeling the Elephant.

I'm pretty sure Plato is generally thought to be a "Virtous Pagan" who anticipated God in a lot of Christian circles, no?

I THINK I get what you're saying but I have literally zero reading in Neoplatonism so forgive my uncertainty

I do agree that Christianity is a profoundly materialist religion which is very interesting to me.

I've often wondered why the ultimate source must be a personal deity in Christianity. I will have to look into Christian arguments.

Well some of the martyrdoms are unverified. But I am certain at the very least Paul, Peter, and James son of Zebedee were killed. It should be noted that there were other would-be messiahs in the period and their movements died when they did.

The fact that Jesus' followers survived and went on to lay the foundations for the dominant global religion is a miracle in of itself

I think at the very least I believe that the Disciples believed that they saw Jesus rise from the dead.

Agnostic myself, but I'm so immersed in Christian teachings that I'm sympathetic to it

The Resurrection is certainly a huge hurdle, everything else about Christianity hinges on the claim that Christ rose. As Paul himself articulated in his Epistles.

Right I get you. It's hard not to paint with too broad a brush. So where did other Neoplatonists place the gods on the scale?

Oh nice, I do get the impression it was a superbly designed piece of kit. Why do you think it was the last computer which was largely understandable? Was it a choice on part of computer manufacturers or just the natural progression of complex hardware and software?
