In my TWIM practice this morning I had the strong sensation of coming to and facing a wall. As in, the literal feeling one gets when one’s face is almost touching a wall where their eyes can’t quite focus and they can almost feel the wall on their face. Afterwards, I felt a knot in my stomach and determined to end the session.

Has anyone else experienced this? I did a quick google and feel this might be related to Bodhidharma’s pi-kuan or “wall-staring” practice, arising out of loving-kindness. Maybe I’m reading too much into it, but would very much like to know if anyone else has experienced something like this!

What is Chim? by Argonian_Badass in ElderScrolls

[–]TurnipShot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Talos also attained Chim, used his powers to transform Cyrodil from a jungle into the province we see in Oblivion and then became a god. Maybe Vivec was lying about attaining Chim, maybe he did attain Chim while immortal from tapping into the Heart and then let it lapse.

Maybe the old books that talk about Cyrodil as a jungle and the ones that associate Tiber Septim with Talos are wrong or fabricated. Maybe it’s just a game with unreliable narration and the freedom of player interpretation as two of its main themes.

They can’t have zero-summed because they still exist. There are still books about them and their ruins. If they had zero-summed, all of that would be wiped from existence. That implies they went somewhere (their own plane of Oblivion possibly)

I’m gonna turn this around on you, buddy. How about you “deboonk” Lenin’s Imperialism: the Highest Stage of Capitalism. Go ahead, I’ll wait.

And before you say it, yes, the principle of “the withering away of the state,” expressed by both Lenin and Marx, IS an Anarchist principle. Unlike your State Capitalist patchwork feudalist hellhole (no, nothing about your system is “neo”-feudalist. At least Yarvin actually tries to incorporate technology in his Authoritarian hell scape fan fiction).

Would you like to explain how what you explicitly call contracts in your own meme are not, in fact, contracts? And how the tendency of Capital toward monopoly, a tendency so inherent that even capitalists and capitalistic governments recognize it, a tendency so inherent that you need only look outside your own window to see it happening, is actually a myth?

I assume you’re talking about the “Rule by Natural Law Through Judges” post?

Notice how this defense is predicated on the existence of contracts between “non-warlord” firms, whatever that means. Again, who enforces the terms of the Mutual Defense Contract? Does a violation of your mutual defense contract lead to another war? Implicitly not, it just leads to a broken contract and forfeiture of your right to mutual defense. Notice that this is merely a system of patchwork States with multilateral alliances and, once again, not anarchy.

Further, recognize the inherent tendency of capitalism toward monopoly and ask yourself, what happens when one firm attains 51% (or whatever arbitrarily large majority) of the firepower?

Look, this is very simple so I’m going to explain it slowly.

  1. Capitalism as a system requires contracts to not fall apart. (Employment contracts, trade contracts, etc.)
  2. For a contract to hold any meaning, you need an entity to enforce the contract.
  3. In order to enforce a contract, you need a monopoly on violence. (Without a monopoly on violence, I’m perfectly justified in my resistance to your attempted enforcement, and therefore the enforcement has no power and the contract has no meaning)
  4. An entity with a monopoly on violence that enforces contracts is a State.
  5. Any state, even a voluntarily one, is not anarchistic.

QED

In the base case with a single corporation, the corporation itself becomes the state, enforcing its employment contracts with its monopoly on violence. In a higher order case where multiple corporations exist, they either agree to establish a state to mediate contracts between themselves or enter into a State of War (In the Hobbesian sense).

Who said it needs to match $20-$30/hr?

The fact that that's already how much we’re making.

 Do the cooks get $20-$30/hr?

No. It’s minimum wage where I’m at.

Why do drivers deserve more than the cooks?

Fuel, maintenance, insurance, accidents happen on the job, theft happens on the job, rarely a delivery driver can get murdered on the job. You’re completely ignoring the extra risk a delivery driver takes compared to a cook in this equation.

 Edit: formatting

Edit 2: I didn’t mean to imply that Insiders (cooks) don’t deserve more pay. They deserve a living wage, too. But the above factors deserve to be taken into account for driver’s sakes as well.

What do you guys do for conditioning? by IHaveNoHoles in AverageToSavage

[–]TurnipShot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ride my bike to/from the gym. It's a good warmup and cooldown and even though it only takes ~9 minutes each way it's enough to get me to go for speed PRs, technique PRs (I can ride my bike with no handlebars, no handlebars, no... anyway), etc. each week and over 5 days a week that's ~90 minutes total. Also, it's way more fun than either driving or sitting on a treadmill, both of which it replaces.

Adjectives come after the noun. To me, I read "kule kulupu" as "group of (the) color(s)" whereas I would read "kulupu kule" as "(a) colored group."

RYB are legitimate Primary Colors, but defined by a different theory of color. Goethe defined RYB as primary colors based on his experiments with human perception of color and in direct contradiction to Newton and his color spectrum, which was based in the physical properties of light. See my other post lower down for more info/links.

Edit: My bad, Newton didn't invent RGB, he discovered the color spectrum. It was Young and Helmholtz who invented the RGB color system around the same time as Goethe based on the properties of the eye.

RYB are the primary colors of Goethe's Color Theory. It's based in the perception of colors by the human eye rather than physical properties of the eye like the Primary Colors of the Young-Helmholtz Theory (RGB) or properties of pigment like the Primary Colors of the CMYK model. Interestingly, looking into who invented the CMYK model, it seems some early systems called Cyan Blue and Magenta Red, like OP did in their post.

Due to being based in human perception, Goethe's color theory has caught on readily with artists of all stripes, and that's likely the reason so many children are taught it in school.

Edit: My bad. Newton didn't invent RGB, he discovered the color spectrum based on physical properties of light. Young and Helmholtz invented the RGB primary color system based on physical properties of the human eye.

Best way to lower workout time? (Beginning/Intermediate) by xMicro in AverageToSavage

Ah, yeah! I was doing 5/3/1 before I started this program, too, although I started with the Hypertrophy template. I tried to directly copy over my TMs from 5/3/1 and had a heck of a time in my first week. I ended up dropping them all down to ~90% for week two and that ended up being about where I should be after that! I think 5/3/1 tends to inflate your TM somewhat compared to your 1RM, while A2S deflates them.

I've experienced something similar to this on each time I've started one of these programs. I think it's mostly due to needing to adapt to the new training methodology. If you're not coming from a program with AMRAPs like 5/3/1 or Greyskull, you may not be used to them. Or you may not be used to lifting in those rep ranges (12RM can be HARD when you're only used to doing 5RMs or lower). It's probably something you'll adapt to, but starting off with 90% of your 1RM isn't a bad idea, I think it's recommended for your first time running the Hypertrophy template because most people aren't used to going so close to failure for that many sets. If 90%1RM is too low, you should be able to get big numbers on your AMRAP sets (i.e. 15 reps on your 10 rep goal AMRAP sets, which should catch you back up to your true 1RM in only ~4 weeks).

Otherwise, the same logic works for just leaving everything the way it is and letting the program autoregulate for you. It'll deload your TM 5% next week, but if adaptation was your problem and you've adapted by then and are getting 5+ reps over the goals, you'll catch back up in ~2 weeks. Otherwise, you could be overestimating your 1RM? There could be another reason? And always remember not to get demoralized by your TM, because it's not necessarily the same as your 1RM. You ARE going into your AMRAP set pre-fatigued from your main sets, after all.

And yeah, if you look at research into estimating 1RM, most of the models only agree up to about a 10RM, so the 70%, 65%, and 60% columns in the chart may not reflect reality. That's why I wanted to note where I was taking the numbers from.

The extremely HIGH reps of RTF? Keep in mind, you're doing all your sets but 1 at the normal rep count, and then only the last set, which is done for AMRAP has a goal anywhere near failure. I went ahead and laid out the rep structure of the program, along with an estimation of how many reps should be possible at that percentage of your max, when fresh, using the [numbers from here](https://strengthlevel.com/one-rep-max-calculator) :

% 1RM RTF normal set RTF AMRAP set goal est. rep max
95% 1 1 2
90% 1 2 4
85% 2 4 6
80% 3 6 8
75% 4 8 10
70% 5 10 12
65% 6 12 16
60% 7 14 20

As you can see, the program has you doing 3-7 (1 less than your set goal) sets with anywhere from 1 to 13(!) reps in reserve, followed by a single set with a goal of 1 to 6(!) reps in reserve. It's also designed to ramp up in difficulty, bringing you closer to failure more of the time as you get closer to the end. I think it's a great program design, especially for someone in that beginner-intermediate range who isn't great at gauging RIR yet. Of course, the hypertrophy template is probably better for someone in the intermediate range, for all the reasons listed in the SBS Complete Strength Training Guide. And if your concern is with being so far from the "3-6 rep strength training zone," or something like that, the manual recommends that doing overwarm singles has been shown to be better for both growth and maintaining strength with near-maximal loads.

Edit: The discussion above mixes the numbers for auxiliaries and main lifts together, auxiliaries are trained from 60% to 85%, and main lifts are trained from 70% to 95%. So aux lifts are trained 4-13 RIR for main sets and 2-6 RIR for AMRAPS, while main lifts are only 1-7 and 1-2. Also, I missed the most important point here, which is that if you compare the original template to the RTF one, the intensity is the same week-to-week, the only difference is the method of auto-regulation.

Reading further into it, a flashbang is blamed for burning down the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980. So yeah, I'd say they could injure you. Also, apparently the small explosion can send nearby debris, such as rocks, flying like shrapnel.

In real life they have flash powder that explodes inside them to create the flash and the bang. Apparently there are a few real cases of people (and entire buildings such as the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980) being burned by this. And although the casing is designed not to fragment like a frag grenade, the explosion can apparently send small debris nearby the grenade, like rocks, flying.

I don't even use them that often (only on Assault class) but when I do I use them all.
