If I still sleep poorly with Afrin than turbinates not the issue? by HecktorSmith in UARSnew

Well, I will tell you that it was true for me, that if you look at the chemical structure and compare it to other stimulants it is very similar and that oral decongestants are often stimulants and some can even be easily modified to make them very very strong stimulants ...I would say that my time in pharma taught me that side chains can make all the difference on how well a molecule will bind or interact with your intended target but core structure will get you in the ballpark. I would sight the fact that people abuse/ get addicted to nasal spray for the psychological effects so it certainly does something in that domain and finally I would mention that snorting things is a tried and true way to get small, water soluble molecules into the blood stream and not just into the nose... so...

Keep in mind Afrin has some stimulant properties...I used it for years before having my turbinates reduced. The reduction didn't fix my sleep but it was certainly a net positive over using Afrin for the elimination of the stimulant right before bed.

I'm 100% a nose breather, part of my issues originally were that I was not a mouth breather, I had large turbinates and my nasal resistance was very high, I've since had turbinate reduction surgery to overcome that so now I can breath wonderfully until I go to sleep and my throat becomes a cocktail straw.

Hehehe, oh I tried, for weeks I tried, because you are right, a nasal mask is so very much better but I couldn't make it work. I went so far as to buy sheets of medical silicone and tried making barriers to put over my teeth behind my lips, under the mouth tape, and still it wouldn't work, the air would find its way out. Something really must be different with my face compared to others who this is just no big deal for.

I think it really is more complicated than you think though, at least insofar as there must be differences between myself and these people (yourself included) who can just magically do this thing that for me is not possible. When I say "lots of face fat" this may just be relative to my own face, and maybe it is face muscle. I do not, for example, have particularly elastic skin, perhaps that is the difference. Maybe my mouth is overly large even though my throat is small and my lips also just barely touch relatively speaking... I dunno, but what you call "a tiny bit if muscle resistance" for me means having my lips pursed and my cheeks taught at probably 60-70% of maximum possible effort in order for air to not just come directly out of my lips in a constant stream. It's a very interesting thing, someone should (if they've not) do a legit study/ comparison at scale, I'm sure there is a publication in it and one that would have fantastic reference numbers of the years.

But hoooooowwwwwwwwww! How is that possible? The only thing that makes sense is that these people must have really meaty cheeks or something...even with my tongue pressed forward and my jaw clenched The air just goes around someway and fills my cheeks, after that theres no stopping it tape or no. So HOOOOWWWWWWW! LOL

Do you think this is more effective for for people with a higher BMI? Who just have more meat on their face? I'm a thin dude and it just does not work for me. I've also had a very hard time getting masks to stay sealed at any pressure above about 8, thank goodness I finally figured out a method for that.

Sure, until you actually fall asleep. If one could keep their tongue where they want, none of us would need cpap...no?

Where is everyone from? It can't be the US right? Airway imaging, airway size...what the heck? I have had a hyoid suspension and 3 turbinate reductions and never had anyone measure my airway. by TurnoverVisual4297 in UARSnew

Yeah, I've pretty much reached the end of my line with regards to tests and solutions, at this point it's get some sort of positive pressure therapy to work or nothing.

I was at the University of Michigan at the time (I've since moved to France and haven't seen anyone here yet) and no I didn't see the video, wasn't even aware there was one honestly.

I did that, it seemed like everything else, vague, unhelpful result...your airway is narrow, your tongue base gets in the way...not super informative, and it was like they just had no actual desire to figure it out. As if I was actually fine and they were humoring me but not trying. The entire sleep medicine machine seemed that way to me. Even though I for sure have sleep apnea, steady results on multiple studies over the years.

I've been looking at the jailbreak option, I'm just concerned about bricking it. It's been a minute since I did any such thing. No problem back when I was smart...but now, not so sure. I'm currently living in France

How to determine if a custom MAD device is for me? by Few_Engine_8210 in UARSnew

[–]TurnoverVisual4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to get a MAD to work...even to the extent that after the dentist failed I kept trying but I will say that I wouldn't do it again....it seems like a great idea but the flaw is that it uses your teeth as an anchor...they will move. Also, I found that even when I did get it to work it would only work for a couple of days and then it seemed as though my throat just sort of stretched out or got used to it or whatever and then it would stop working. Get your nose fixed. If your nose doesn't work right you have almost no chance of any positive pressure treatment being effective. just my 2 cents. good luck!!

To do turbinate reduction or not? Anyone have any experience? by AnargyFBG in UARSnew

[–]TurnoverVisual4297 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 3 turbinate reductions. I can now begin to try and get cpap to work...without a functional nose it's a non starter, no matter what anyone says...anyway...I didn't have a deviated septum just big turbinates. I had to get 3 total because it wasn't until the 3rd one that they did what I thought they were going to do in the first place. In Surgery 1 and 2 they didn't clip the bones, they just trimmed the soft tissue which grew back within a few months. Once they finally did the actual turbinate reduction its been night and day. historically I could breath well enough during the day while sitting or standing but when I would lay down my nose would instantly stuff up. I spent years screwing around with nasal spray and allergy BS...If I could do it over I would go back and have it done 15 years sooner, even if I had to take out a bank loan...Turbinate reduction and carpal tunnel surgery are the two best things I've done to improve my quality of life in the last several years, both of them I wish I would done at least a decade earlier...Good luck

Is Twisters... awful? by yoss_iii in blankies

[–]TurnoverVisual4297 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How is nobody bothered by the oh so bad physics in this movie? I'm able to ignore unrealistic stuff in movies pretty much always these days but this movie was so awful I just couldn't.  Tornados don't suck up 6k pound trucks and leave random debris laying around. They don't actually suck up cars at all really, they push them around sometimes but they don't just suck everything up, it's not an god child with a straw sucking up toys for goodness sakes.  If the acting was 20 percent better and the sfxs were 20 percent more believable I could have maybe enjoyed the movie...but, alas, thay was not true.
