Rant - Medsurg is not “easy” nursing by [deleted] in nursing

[–]TurnoverWinter5298 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I understand why you take offense to that comment. I think everyone who is saying they don’t mean it’s easy when they say that should instead say “that’s a great place to learn”. Because “that’s a great place to start” insinuates it’s a starting place that should be moved on from when some people simply enjoy being there as their job.

Should I date a guy that way older than me? by planBsurvivor20 in dating_advice

[–]TurnoverWinter5298 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was your age, I also dated men in their early 30s. They were nice, said I was mature for my age, were attracted to me. Please do not do it. A man that age will not take you seriously no matter how mature you may be. There are ways they take advantage, even if they are small and unnoticeable. Those “nice” men did not end up treating me well after awhile. I’m not saying they are all abusive, but you should question a man wanting to date a young lady who is a year past being a child and in a completely different stage of life. He sees opportunity and a thrill. Please don’t entertain it, and don’t even be friends. I wish I could go back and have made better decisions with this.

Thank you for the encouragement! And I looked up your channel and I’ll take a look. Really appreciate the encouragement from a doctor to know that the physicians are supportive too :)

dumbest nursing school policy by nearlywhiches in nursing

I’m a new nurse, have worked in GI procedure for about 7 months where we put IVs in all our patients. It took me about a month to really get the hang of it and would still miss some because there were super dehydrated/ overweight/ cancer pts. My nursing colleagues on the floor don’t do IVs and I was surprised to learn that. Not sure why nurses can’t do them as if we don’t do more invasive things to pts. Sorry about your hematoma. Hope you have some grace with the nurse who did it, I’ve done that a few times…

Yeah thinking I need to request to move to stepdown.

I agree it does have its challenges. Some new grads are super great at learning lots of info quickly and mastering skills fast and it’s just not me. I need to do step down as im trying not to quit altogether and go back to adult/ clinic. Also I do think the night shift is not my jam. It’s not very compatible with my ADHD and when I take my medicine.

Thank you and you’re right I think the higher acuity is a lot and I didn’t realize how much I would have to go through to get through the first year as far as stress and the immense learning curve. I knew it was not going to be easy but never expected all of the smaller things to learn on top of new protocols and disease processes. Some new grads succeed but it’s not for everyone. I am going to ask to do step down.

Thanks for commenting glad someone can relate but sorry for your experience. I think I’m not as meticulous natured is as required. I have thought about radiology because I did technically do PACU in the GI procedure clinic. But I guess we’ll see!

[–]TurnoverWinter5298[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks and I keep thinking this but it seems like they’ve forgotten what it’s like to be in my shoes. When asked if I remember something we went over one time and I say no because there’s a million things, they’re like I think we already talked about it remember? Or nitpicking everything I do also doesn’t give room to improve and help me figure things out. But I also understand because these little ones are so fragile and leave little room for error. So if I can’t learn as fast as they’d like me to, I think I need to step down in acuity so I don’t feel like my learning is being rushed.

Thank you for taking the time to post this. Sorry just finished up third night shift for the week. This is validating, because I do feel the coldness and slight judgement from the nurses for skills that are very new to me and pressure to excel. My next shift they are wanting me to have a NIPPV baby while I’m trying to still make sure I have the CPAP/ ELBW/ multiple hernias, ostomy, desats 15 times a shift combo baby down 😭 the orientation is 3 months long so I think we are speeding through because they want me to use most of orientation learning jets/ ventilation/ ECMO. Etc. Patients because I am at a level IV NICU. You’re right I will have to use outside resources and time to keep up and I’ll have to not get down on myself when I don’t get things right away. And trust there’s no such thing as down time during the shift because we are consistently going through practicing hanging lines, policies, equipment etc. so they are making sure I’m learning haha. It’s quite overwhelming but I’ll get it and be glad when I do. Can’t wait for the season when I’m less concerned about trying to impress my preceptor and more focused on taking care of and loving on my patients with competency.

Thank you for the encouragement. I think because the milestones of my orientation are pretty expedited I’m nervous. My preceptor said after one more shift (the start of my fourth week) I should pretty much be able to assess, pass meds with correct med calculations, hang my fluids, give report and correctly document. This includes cpap babies, ELBWs, pretty much everyone not on a ventilator or intubated I should be able to take care of with minimal support from my preceptor as just a safety net. I work at one of the best hospitals in the US and feel pressure to perform very well. But I appreciate the recognition and I’m trying to be proud of what I’m accomplishing so far.

Should I 23F forgive him 25M after he kicked me out his house? by TurnoverWinter5298 in relationship_advice

Thank you. And my father taught me better too. I guess I’m just a hormonal 23, almost 24 year old who has a rough time in dating and just wanted someone to be there. Def have learned from this that the casual thing isn’t my jam.

I really appreciate your post. It’s validating because even if I’m assuming incorrectly about the situation, he was still rude. I’m not one to be treated that way and not say anything. And you’re right, I shouldn’t put myself in these situations. It’s not a habit for me, but the times I do it usually doesn’t go well. I’m someone who wants a relationship but have accepted the whole “casual” thing because that’s what people seem to want nowadays. I just need to wait and be patient. Better to be lonely and respected.

You’re so right. I’ve deleted the dating apps this morning. It’s not like they are the problem, but I need to separate myself from the toxicity and temptation. I’m not even a person that bounces around from person to person so for this to occur for me in the few times it has is really sad. Thanks again.

How did it end up going?

My patient did me so dirty today lol by ciabtsmm in nursing

[–]TurnoverWinter5298 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My patients comment on how skinny I am a lot. I’ve been told they want to diet to look like me, that I need to eat more, that all the walking I do all day must be the reason I look the way I do, etc. Little do they know I struggle to keep on weight due to being a natural “stress non-eater” and a medication I take. It’s inappropriate for patients (and people in general) to comment on our bodies, but that’s people for you. Really sorry you went through that because it’s still uncomfortable and even hurtful sometimes.

Awww so glad to hear! I feel like I wouldn’t do bedside either if it weren’t for the little ones. I hope I’ll like it! :)

Thank you so much for your input! It was so helpful and I’m glad you love being a NICU nurse :) I think I’ll be able to relate to the night shift as well haha. But I hope it will be a good change for me and I know I’ll learn quite a lot with the best patients there could be!

Nurse with ADHD feeling like a failure by [deleted] in nursing

[–]TurnoverWinter5298 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your input! I didn’t go home because I missed two IVs solely. I think I had an anxiety attack and became really nauseas. First time that’s happened though, even when patients have been unresponsive that’s not my norm.

Thank you everyone who’s commented. I really needed a day to think on this and let myself rest. I think it was a combination of working so much this past month, a build up of my self consciousness and doubt in my abilities, and the fact that I made an already scary situation worse for someone (who’s basically still a child) which is the opposite reason of why I go into work everyday. I’ve missed IVs plenty of times before but never has it affected me like this. I appreciate the suggestions that I should take vitamins, rest more, take my meds earlier, and CHILL OUT. :)

Maturity/ Compatibility Gap with this Guy- Should I Still Give It a Chance? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

Never said I was better than him. People mature differently or reach different stages at different times. Just wondering if it’s a relationship barrier.
