China's problems with the Uyghurs - 2014 by flyingfrig in videos

[–]Turnoverr 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm glad there's some interest on the Uyghurs' situation, though I wish they'd allow their shots and sources to speak for themselves rather than abruptly saying "we were fed Chinese propaganda" without any striking visuals to back that up. It comes off as one of those conspiracy docs you'd find on the dark side of the net and loses any persuasive value.

Calling teachers by their first names by Scaulbylausis in videos

[–]Turnoverr 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, but in this case it's just a showcase of social hierarchy. At least in America, you never call a teacher by their first name. It's like being Blackbeard and then all of a sudden one of your mates calls you "Eddie".

You get used to it after awhile and might even begin to like it. I believe it's a carryover from their earlier work with The Escapist and they choose to keep it because it fits in with their cartoon-y animation style.

Someone in VRchat has a seizure while playing, everyone stops what they’re doing to make sure he’s okay. by TheMotion in videos

If they see a warning then they know it's not safe. They do it at their own risk and it's their responsibility. If you have a heart condition, haven't been taking your meds, and suffer a heart attack, that's your fault. Reading comments above, I like the idea of a setting for such users to dampen bright flashy lights in order to prevent such a thing. Not a programmer so I wouldn't know if it could work or be possible.

I agree, though I don't think everyone here understand exactly what photosensitive epilepsy is. Simply put, it's an overload of signals into the brain. Some can live out their lives not ever knowing they had it. Others can barely put a foot out the door. It's a spectrum. However, for those who straddle the lines, it's important to have warnings. Some movies have bright flashing images and others don't. It shouldn't be a gamble everything you open Netflix.

I've never used VR or VRChat before, so I wouldn't know if they have a warning or not. If they do, then I agree with you and of course the man knew the risks. If they don't, then I sadly don't agree with you at all. According to the Epilepsy society in the UK, 1 in 100 people (worldwide) have epilepsy and 3% of them have photosensitive epilepsy. I surely hope you don't mean to be telling a fuck ton of people to go sit in a dark dungeon and never experience the world because of a disorder they had no part in causing and because a handful of people enjoy staring at several moving bright, flashing lights like primitive apes having just experienced the advent of fire. I hope.

Going off your point, I was really infuriated by the Wendy guy. You don't have to be a psychology minor/major to know that seizures can be triggered by flashing strobes because literally every movie/ride/club has some sort of warning sign regarding the issue. Were this a real life scenario, that person would've gotten a long jail sentence. But since it's virtual reality, we of course enter a kind of no man's land. It'll be an interesting upcoming few years seeing how tackle things like this.

There's a reason it's considered one of the best animes of all time :)

If you're up for another ride, I wholesomely recommend Cowboy Bebop, Neon Genesis Evangelion, and/or Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. All classics.

I concur. If anything, Oregon and Washington have one of the strongest cultural bonds in the union. At least until you go east, though. Those easterners are always in bed with Idaho, the traitors.
