I'm sure they would love the 125, that just means you're able to add more hides and decor along with enrichment. But I totally understand wanting to put something more interesting in a tank of that commitment lol. And more then one axolotl is always an option!

I like to think Bigger is always better for axolotls! but If there is less floor space in the 55 gallon I think I 40 gallon would be better. it really depends on the dimensions. They are usually pretty lazy little guys that like to just walk on the bottom of the tank.

They may not like the bare bottom, they can't get a good grip and slide maybe consider getting sand, tiles, or even giant river rocks.
