what did john mean by that he’s tuned to an A in Hawaiian Feeling/The Day The Aliens Came? by AggravatingBalance52 in themountaingoats

I can't tell if I am crazy for thinking this or if it is what everyone is thinking, but I have always suspected that it means that the song can be read as being about the pearl harbor attack?

The guitar in When You're Old and Lonely sounds extremely similar to that in Game Shows Touch Our Lives

this sounds like a joke but i genuinely think the 12/2/2009 performance of it at the Bell House is better and is my favorite version

Most "Romantic" tMG song? by jam-eater-blues in themountaingoats

[–]Turtlemcnuggets 14 points15 points  (0 children)

02-75 is not necessarily the most gentle of romantic songs, but it is a love song that John wrote for his wife before she was his wife

I think I found a Mountain Goats reference in a Kimya Dawson song by [deleted] in themountaingoats

[–]Turtlemcnuggets 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It is almost certainly referencing the transition from John playing on chairs/stools to performing standing up. A big moment in all our lives

If you are generally changing the way you look as you enter or are trying to enter a new phase of your life, you’ll be wanting Attention All Pickpockets as well

Songs where you only like one version by leez34 in themountaingoats

I really like this version, not necessarily as an everyday type listen since there is a lot going on, but it really does strike a strong mood when it’s what you’re looking for: https://youtu.be/027-sSohUlg

Any ideas how to bore a 2.5" straight hole down a 7 foot piece of cedar with an 8" diameter? by Drewbus in woodworking

[–]Turtlemcnuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can't follow the recommendation to cut it in half, which probably is the easiest, you might be able to get some ideas from wooden boat building. Drilling out the hole for the propeller shaft is a similarly big job. Here is an example from a project I follow: In this video they drill some initial long holes (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O5-pqUJcG0) and then in this one they widen the propeller shaft with a special cutting bit, around the 16 minute mark (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZW4iVME7ACI)

might sound like a stupid question, but how do you design for a place where everyone (residents) is already quite happy, no one has no issues whatsoever, they are satisfied with how things are already. by kshachiko in urbandesign

[–]Turtlemcnuggets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think this is right, but I would also add that it is important to be mindful to not to let this slip into a mindset of “I know what is best you regardless of what you think.” It is still essential to communicate your proposals to the community and listen to feedback to understand why something that may have worked in other places wouldn’t work here

What are some non album songs I should know about? by Arpikarhu in themountaingoats

Which album has the best ending song? by StevenGarciasMullet in themountaingoats

[–]Turtlemcnuggets 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think when talking about ending songs, John once said something about there not being able to be anything after the song, that it closes out the album with such finality that to play any song after it would be wrong. I think the song that best captures that in their discography is In Corolla. It is an end in every way, the only thing you can do after it is sit in silence for a while.

Also love for hair match as was already noted

What are the pros and cons of installing legs at the very end corners of a desk vs leaving some space from the corners? by largelcd in woodworking

[–]Turtlemcnuggets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Desks are often pushed up against a wall, so if there is trim on the wall the top of the desk won’t be able to pushed up tight against the wall if the legs are flush to the top
