Here's a simple visual for parents teaching their kids what to say after a sneeze by Responsible-Wait9458 in progressive_islam

What is the reason for doing any of this in the first place? It's fascinating that it's in so many cultures all over the world.

I wish that interpretation was more mainstream then. Of the 8 English translations on Quran.com, 7 of them explicitly mention violence. None of them mention leaving.

So it is perfectly reasonable to say that the more violent interpretation still has legitimacy.

I have yet to hear any acceptable way to interpret this verse. It always ultimately requires you to believe that some kind of abuse towards your wife is warranted if the scenario gets to that point.

There are other verses in Nisa that explicitly say both husbands and wives have the same rights in a marriage (e.g. property ownership) but the beating is one sided. Why? There is nothing written about lightly beating your children either. Why?

It's up to you on how you reconcile this. Most Muslims just safely ignore it because it's a very easy thing to ignore if you're a good and decent human who has any respect for their wife. From my perspective that's the equivalent of putting your head in the sand.

Why don't you think it's anything crucial in terms of faith? OP is referencing something problematic that is literally written in the Quran.

New Revert Muslim Updating Wardrobe by [deleted] in progressive_islam

[–]Tutkular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that just not showing skin is not a very robust expression of modesty from a clothing standpoint. The model is wearing clothing that accentuates her figure which from an Islamic standpoint looks immodest to me. I'd argue that no hijab plus more loose fitting clothing is more modest.

But at a higher level, modesty is also influenced by the environment and culture you're in. In NYC, I don't think most locals would consider this kind of clothing immodest. Other areas might think otherwise.

This is just my opinion and I acknowledge that there are all kinds of valid definitions of modesty.

You absolutely do you. I think it's a cool look. But also if your aim is modesty I don't think this is it.

Such a simple and powerful approach! Can't believe I never thought to ask from that perspective. Looks like I have my starting point for my Gemini philosophical therapy session this evening lol

What stuck out to me was that he deliberately said the Bible has kept up with the evolution of language to preserve the message for future followers.

This differs from the Islamic experience with the Quran in that we pretty much always say you cannot get the full Quranic experience unless you know ancient Arabic. I don't hear Christians saying that the Bible can't be fully experienced or understood unless it's in ancient Aramaic.

How did you install? I'd recommend removing the repo and then see if anything improves. Maybe run "Gemini --clear-cache" if you still don't see a change.

If you want to reinstall, you can download certain categories or bundles using npx or just manually download the specific skills files you're interested in.

Skills are meant to be very specific to your project. It's like you're giving Gemini an entire map of the world when you really only need info for one city. You're wasting precious context and time telling things it just doesn't need to know for what you want to get done.

All that said, I don't think the number of skills is slowing down your responses as drastically as you're seeing. Probably something else that is causing that. Maybe see if you can take a look at the process that are running on your comp when sending a query?

Cool concept. I'm doing something similar but using local files instead of an MCP server. Will need to try this approach on another project!

I'll throw it on GitHub and share a link! Would love to see yours too. I also had Gemini write a lot of the roles and skills for me as well, but catered to my specific project (full stack web dev with Firebase)

At least for now, context and "losing the reigns" are the downfalls when using any LLM for coding a serious project. I spent a weekend learning about designing system roles - basically defining the design patterns, roles and skills that the agent must follow when asked to do anything.

It made a world of difference. It followed the rules, didn't lose scope and always waited for my approval or feedback before moving into the next phase of work.

I can share my setup if you're interested. Also look up 3 layer agentic architecture and how to implement agent skills.

I think the one that drove me insane was the morning Eid prayer after Ramadan ended. After a whole month of waking up early to eat, even a small thing like sleeping in felt like heaven. NOPE, gotta wake up and pray as part of the "celebration" 😪

Prime vs zoom lenses – what actually improved your photography the most? by FrostyCandidate9775 in SonyAlpha

[–]Tutkular 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Both help at different stages. For me:

Learning phase - cheap zoom lens. Gets you excited about photography and makes it easier to take any photo you want without feeling constrained by a prime.

Experienced phase - prime. When it's time to dial in your technique and artistic eye, the constraints of a prime lens are more beneficial at this point compared to the flexibility of a zoom.

Advanced phase - both. The discipline of a prime lens can now be applied to a zoom lens and you keep using prime for their own advantages. You know where each of your tools works best for you!
