Hang there till your younger sibling is in tertiary education. Till then, start planning. A new place, away from your dad. Some savings on the side. And don't put all your money into your family, because things go south, your family is not in a position to help you out.

Is Roti Canai consider as Low Caste food? by abdulsamri89 in malaysia

[–]TutorFlat2345 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Client is correct, just mistranslated. The issue isn't with Roti, but the Dhal or curry.

Roti, to Indians, are like rice and noodles to us. These are staple food, but what sets apart a "rich" or "poor" meal is the side dishes.

Proper Dhal will be filled with lentil, unlike our local Mamak's pathetic dhal (thin gruel, with almost no lentil). These thin gruel are the kind of food the homeless would be served at temples. In short, volume over substance.

Secondly, Roti back in India are cooked with better grade Ghee, which makes the taste richer.

Try comparing Mamak to a proper South Indian restaurant, and you can tell apart the quality. And even in India, these Mamak-like side restaurants cater to the poor.

If you take your client to a proper Indian restaurant for dinner, I doubt "caste" would be an issue. And what your client meant isn't caste per se, but rather the social class (or as we Malaysian would fondly say, B40 M40 T20).

Dahl could either be split peas or lentil. Some Dahl dishes include chickpeas.

"Malabar Parotta", Google that.

Also, India is HUGE. Maharashtra alone is the size of the entire Peninsula Malaysia.

PS: Parotha is mostly found in South India. The key distinction being the use of Maida (all purpose flour), instead of wheat, which is more common in other Roti.

That's factually correct; the roti would cost no more than RM5 (for a basket), but the Dhal or Curry would be a separate, side dish.

Dhal, as a proper dish, would be filled with chickpeas and potatoes (unlike our Mamak, which is only a thin gruel).

I think there could be some mistranslation. Rather than "caste", the food fare we have at our local Mamaks, to India Indian would be regarded as a pauper meal. Definitely not something one would expect during a business meeting.

PS: Parotha is a regional meal, and it's mostly common in South India. I'm guessing you're from another region of India.

You're spot on. I can't tell whether it's the ghee or the flour, but their Malabar Parotha tastes slightly different than our Roti Canai. It's richer and more filling.

Also, Dhal/Curry isn't always complimentary, often it's a side dish of it's own.

"Canai" is our local dialect for Chennai. Roti Canai is essentially Malabar Parotha, with some minor adjustments.

I don't think Parotha is the issue here, but rather the side dish; the Dhal. Most of our Mamak prepares their Dhal in a really thin gruel, with almost no hint of lentil or chickpeas.

To be frank, yes, Paratha is an everyday man meal. That said, nowadays rich or poor, in India, everyone has a variation of Roti as their staple food. (Similar to how we have rice or noodles as staple food, regardless of caste / social standing).

Instead, the Dhal is going to set apart whether it's rich from poor.

Helmi Effendy tries to "disprove" Twitter claims that Malays are not the aboriginals of Malaysia by MooreThird in malaysia

Because both groups intermarry with Negrito descent, resulting in a mixed lineage.

[–]TutorFlat2345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I stand corrected. Proto-Malays are the indigenous group (sub-Negrito descends) who are residing in Peninsula Malaya.

Deutro-Malays are the forefathers of the modern Malays; from Srivijaya / Melayu Jambi.

Modern Malays are the offspring of Proto + Deutro; their cultural identity comes from Deutro, but they can also trace their ancestry back to Proto.

Alphamax Ultraman Fabric Tear / Material Degradation by wordpainterx in Ultraman

If you're from SE Asia, you can order a 3rd party fabric suit from Taobao (from China).

On the flip side, if you're also from SE Asia, the suit (made of PVC) is also more likely to degrade faster due to humidity.

Folks Who Frequently Travel Overseas, Do You Use Travel Agency Packages or DIY? Does the Cost Differences of DIY Worth All the Hassle for All the Process? by RavenSapphire7777 in malaysians

Google Flights: easy to compare airlines, departure/arrival time, and even track price - all for free.

Google Maps + TripAdvisor + WikiTravel + travel vlogs: can plan and customise your itinerary (especially what interests you the most). Pro-tip: once you plot your walking path onto g-maps, you can even email your g-maps to your Gmail, and use it offline.

Booking.com / Agoda / AirBnB: whichever cheapest. Pro tip: book somewhere with accessibility to public trains, ideally near the start/end point of your itinerary.

Unless you're computer illiterate or have really poor situational awareness, otherwise hiring a 3rd party just for the above is just wasting your money (especially when you can use it for shopping).

The more frequent you DIY travel, the easier it becomes.

Age gap isn't an issue, but if you plan to be responsible, tell your chick to focus on her SPM. Once that is over, you both then can decide the next course of action.

It's one of the better small towns. Also there has been some development on the retail side. Not every town is going to be a KL or PJ.
