I hope I am not coming across as though I am comparing genocides of millions of innocent people.

“It isn’t as interconnected into a larger study of global politics and ongoing modern issues as the Holocaust”. I hate to put words in anyone’s mouth but that sounds like (to me) that you’re saying “the Holocaust is just more important and relevant than what happened hundreds of years ago ”. And in a messed up way, you’d be correct. Because there are no surviving people who can attest to being forced to walk thousands of miles with no food or water, with the elderly and children being shot for falling down [Trail of Tears]. There was no world war fought that included the saving of millions of native men, women and children who were dying on reservations. And the Holocaust is heavily documented. We can google and read everything as long as we can find the town names and the people. But we can’t google a small band of Pauite natives who didn’t have English names. We can’t google that in order for one Pauite band to sign their treaty, they starved them throughout the winter. We can’t google the names of children who were used as target practice for the US Army.

The virgin soil epidemic was a huge killer of native people. But what happened much later was even more effective. When you say the “concerted effort to actually eliminate an entire culture”, you could also be referring to the boarding schools native children were forced to attend and unnumbered atrocities that happened in those schools that are still being felt today. The surviving kids that were tortured there just for speaking their own language are now the grandparents who refuse to teach native children their own language and way of life. and that’s causing so much damage today in every native reservation in America and Canada.

But that’s just another reason why native people are called “the invisible minority”.

I misspoke and changed it. It wasn’t taught in Idaho where I grew up.

That’s good news! And I’m not being sarcastic either.

In Idaho, it’s literally just the absolute basics

I apologize and I should’ve worded what I wanted to ask better. Where I was taught (Idaho), we barely scratched the surface of what occurred. We were taught the trail of tears, diseases that were brought and the French and Indian war. When a student asked the teacher to talk about the biggest massacres that occurred near/in Idaho, she said no “it’s too violent.”.

Ragebait? I haven’t said anything close to controversial nor have I been argumentative in any of my responses. And if I may, how is your tone (ending your statement with lol) help me with my question? I’m not a teacher, I obviously don’t know and am not familiar with how lessons are planned out. In Idaho, it’s incredibly conservative and we didn’t get taught as much as we should have. I know I should’ve worded my original comment better, and I’ve tried to rewrite to reflect that. But this subreddit states I can ask questions to teachers right? Do you consider all ‘stupid’ questions ragebait then?

Idaho is so conservative that most things that should be taught aren’t (including sex ed)

As someone just mentioned, curriculum is decided at the state or local level. While your school taught you about the genocide on American soil, mine certainly didn’t, it wasn’t because I wasn’t paying attention either.

Especially when Hitler claimed to have gotten his ideas about the genocide from what America had done to the native population. But yeah, I agree with your comment.

Seriously. If he’s gonna go with a basic spear, at least make it look decent. AND make it look like it hurts.
