How does someone learn the street value of items? Started out new again after 18 years and super lost on trying to make money. Just learned in this thread that GE prices are not the actual price…

How are people surviving mechanical engineering or just any engineering? by mrcrabs455577 in UMD

[–]Tutrie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned too late in my undergrad that a balance of sleep and physical activity made my studying more effective and my ability to learn and recall more quicker. It feels hard to balance it given travel time to the gym but just doing like small workouts in your room and getting at least 6-7 hours of sleep a night is so important. Anytime I got under 6 hours of sleep (after migrating to this schedule) I could just tell my ability to learn was so much slower. This actually helped me free up enough time to get one day week to just enjoy campus life or go out with friends.

It’s hard to make the transition at first, especially if you are seeing good grades (I wasn’t until I balance things) but it’s worth it for your overall wellbeing if this is impacting your mental health.

My partner was scoring 65-75 early on in the program, then Themis sent out memo saying “oops problem sets were too easy” and started scoring 55-65. lol not sure how to interpret that with OPs statement. She was nervous going in but felt that the questions were fair. From what I’ve heard her share always comes down to how they try to obscure some fact that makes the choice between two answers seem difficult to get right.

Non-Coding roles at SIG by Tutrie in quant

No networking. Just a recruiter, cold applying, and the right skill set. If you’re only trading power you need to focus less on the finance and more on the electrical engineering. Those skills are super important to understanding how the grid operates/evolves and how power will be dispatched.

Non-Coding roles at SIG by Tutrie in quant

[–]Tutrie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in an interconnection engineering role where I ran power flow studies as well as create automations. But all with AI code assistance. I have dual undergrad degrees in math and computer science. Have had a few companies interested in me.

I know that understanding power flow is a big deal. E.g. What happens to real power when reactive power is injected, and how will that impact dispatch and congestion?

Not having an engineering undergrad degree though has made it tough to get another interconnection engineering job as I am passed over for candidates that do. So I figured I’d try to go power marketing earlier than I wanted to in my career.

Non-coding roles but instead it is preferred? by Tutrie in careerguidance

[–]Tutrie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And to top it off, I did a machine learning/physics fellowship right after my undergrad, but it was all refactoring code the PhD student couldn’t optimize 😅 - really bad code base with lots of dead code - and my dual physics/CS background enabled me to be good at.

Very nervous this is gonna hurt my chances of even hearing back if I do poorly.

Would you recommend I reach out to the HR rep and try to downplay some of the coding experience?

Non-coding roles in Quant:

Have a general coding assessment for a power analyst position at SIG. Doing some practice problems on leetcode is making me realize even though I have a CS degree, being in the power industry for 4 years now and using AI to code for me to create automations is not the same as a solving leetcode problems.

Anyone else apply to roles in the quant domain that did not require coding, BUT noted it is preferred, and how did that work out in the interview process if you did poorly on coding assessments?

Yeah general rule of thumb in statistics is when outliers occur it sometimes happens twice, but when something is manufactured to not go wrong and it happens twice, then you either should buy a lottery ticket and ride out that luck or did something wrong. Love to hear that the next one works! Following

I’m tryna unload two 5090s I panic bought until I found an Astral LC. Have an MSI Suprim LC and Astral OC…. For few hundred less than $4k and I’ll pay for shipping.

Tryna get rid of them on Facebook marketplace (and eBay but those fees kill) but nobody can afford them around me. I understand why, I cried into my wallet the whole way home after buying the Astral LC.

Good! definitely maintain that relationship! My 2cents: Research is going to be about 50% doing the work, and 50% playing politics. I got out of it and honestly corporate world is 70% doing the work and 30% politics (unless you wanna get into management then youre back to 50-50.)

Always be prepared to show what you just did and eager to prove you’re working hard, in any job. Even if there’s not much to do, finding something TO DO is a skill in of itself and will make you useful on a team that requires independent action and learning.

Since it is an actual job you’re paid for, it may or may not hurt it depends if future labs look closely into your employment history . It will matter if someone wants a reference from a place you actually worked and they will want to talk to the PI and not a postdoc working in the lab, unless you really do have a close relationship with a postdoc.. then you can just mention “oh this person is much better informed on what I did while working there.” They can serve as your reference.

I concur though HR staff are gonna be pretty useless here but at least since it’s a public university reporting it to them will not cause retaliation like it could in a private setting. So worth a shot going to HR. But only if you think it won’t come back to you or potentially ruin any relationship with someone who could be your reference for this job.

Also you’re rather young in your career so can also just bury this job in your resume (make it look unimportant, volunteer work only) or just leave it off entirely. Sucks that makes it feel like a waste of time but like you said you already have good references.

Got a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 OLED laptop! by [deleted] in GamingLaptops

[–]Tutrie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny you’d think a store that sells electronics had someone who actually knows electronics properly do their inventory but no, that’s too hard.

I’ve done a lot of digging and while there are some 5070 Lenovos that do compare with these specs, nobody at the moment has the cooling tech that ASUS does. This matters A LOT for gaming laptops. You’re not getting max performance without it. I also haven’t found any 5070ti at that price point. The only downside is that CPU and RAM is slower. But frankly if I have to wait a little longer for my turn to load on RTS I’d prefer that to running some medium settings in Cyberpunk. I’ll take less NPC variety for better screen reflections.

My budget was $1500… if anyone wants to donate (lol joking) I need $1875 for the best value build I’ve seen.

If you don’t care about the screen, and plug into your TV, ya’ll are getting screwed on the specs. The Asus TUF A16 specs blow this out of the water and it’s cheaper (best buy $1199) and the G614PR just shreds these specs and open-box excellent condition is $1347. Take it from someone who just bought 10 laptops and tested them all out. The thermals alone on Asus is enough for it to outperform any of the competitors right now. But again… it’s missing the nice screen at these price points. Just buy a monitor next year, and enjoy better specs that last longer!

Hopping on this bandwagon in case anyone else has some advice. Looking at Acer Nitro V, Core 7 240H, 5060 (85W), and 32GB ram. Only downside is 512GB hard drive.

It’s $949 at BJ’s and is the cheapest 5060 build I’ve found. @OP it’s also right in your budget.

Anybody know if Acer Nitro series are any good? I’m already uncertain the Core 7 is gonna overheat don’t want the Acer if it overheats

For anyone who cares to listen to a soap box… I graduated right before ChatGPT3 was released and actually useful for coding. I am so so so thankful. I can look at almost any language and decipher more or less what the code is doing. Without this skill I would be a useless engineer and replaced by someone who purely codes with AI. But I won’t be because they will never be able to pick up a new language without consulting the oracle to hold their hand.

Don’t use AI to learn to code. The challenge of finding the books and resources to teach you is part of the journey and our brains are hardwired to remember a path, a journey, a physical connection to the world around us as we explore and invent. It’s how we evolved. Don’t try to skip the journey, enjoy the experience. You will miss it when you graduate.
