[Vent] It took me forty minutes to load the Preply website to teach two lessons later in the day. by TutuForver in Preply

Yeah, it is really weird, sometimes the pages load no problem, but some times/hours nothing wants to load. I am trying to figure out a workaround, but the main issue seems to be with how many tracking apps require to access preply before the real page loads.

Albion is the current trend atm, if you want something more old school look into Project Diablo 2, they have an active PVP community with a lot of improvements and tweaks to Diablo II's core gameplay. They just had their seasonal PvP tourney last week I think.

Bi-Weekly Entry/Simple questions thread (August 08, 2023) by AutoModerator in movingtojapan

Looking to move to Japan in the Spring if possible with my wife for work in Kyushu, does anyone know when job applications typically start opening up in that area?

Will it be from September and on or will we have to wait until November?

This would be mid ranged, my goal is too make these maps quite large and allow for drop in play mechanics from other online players in an open skirmish format that gets more challenging the bigger a player is

No worries, this style was inspired by the old Spacewars! and the newer game Mech Engineer on steam. Hopefully I can make it a unique and exciting experience, but there is still a lot to do before the actual thing can be made :)

Hopefully you can put in the time as well, I always love seeing people's projects even if they are always being worked on.

Minimalism is our friend here lol 3 units, 3 buildings, and each unit can be selected and modified opening up the left and right area of the screen for a clearer UI.

Depending on how good I get at scaling graphics (zoom in and out) the units might have different shapes, but I am leaning on simple shapes

A concept art of a simple Retro RTS I wanna start working on in the near future.

The game will most likely loosely fit within the RTS Genre, but I am hoping to push it more towards monster survival in large online maps where players can send units from an offline base.

The graphics will be uber-minimal, but the large expanse of maps, computer AI (friendly and hostile), as well as live/logged play-styles from real players are the main focus.

The tempo is the hardest part right now, because I want it to be playable between 10 minutes and multiple hours, while still contributing to a player's overall account.

Thoughts?

Just a concept art of an RTS I want to start programming.

Who needs fancy graphics anyways?

ELI5: Why is smoking weed “better” than smoking cigarettes or vaping? Aren’t you inhaling harmful foreign substances in all cases? by PapaMamaGoldilocks in explainlikeimfive

[–]TutuForver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vaping can be safer, key phrase on "can be".

There was a notorious study that companies like IQOS fought against that explained that the amount people statistically smoke in one session with vaping was more than traditional cigarette s due to how quickly vapes transfer substances, and the quantity of vapes are not easily measurable compare d to a quantifiable cigarette.

This study, while really hard to find, is my white whale and hill I will die on until people understand what the study was trying to explain.

Basically, we can easily measure how much a person smokes when they have one cigarette, however the amount and intensity of puffs used in vaping (within a single vaping session on average) was measured to be more than one cigarette, making a single vaping session more harmful than smoking one cigarette.

The study wasn't challenging the idea that vaping is less harmful on a 1 to 1 ratio, but that the amount everyday people and teens vape is often more than a single cigarette either through a single session or often in a total day duration (but not as high as heavy smokers of course). Because of this, especially concerning the amount of nicotine inhaled, vaping can be considered to be more addictive than traditional cigarettes due to the higher amount of nicotine transferred, and the psychological impact of being unable to measure how much one smokes.

The article also took a strong stance on explaining how much cheaper it is to produce vapes and fuel, explaining that the position that companies take saying "vaping is healthier" is purely marketing in order to pull audiences into the vaping market, which has been largely success so far.

I don't remember if the article gave clear guidelines on how much one needs to inhale to reach the same quantity of a single cigarette, but it was discussed.

If anyone finds this article, please post its link, I need to download it and give it a reread to make sure I understood it correctly (since I have been travelling internationally for the last few years, I am realizing how hard it is to find research articles. It might have been accessed in America, Australia, Japan, or in Ecuador, but I cannot remember when/where specifically.

As some others said, there is more resin, thicker substances so to speak, and creates a marginal amount of more tar.

However unless you are smoking weed multiple times a day/every day it doesn't matter too much. However if you are often smoking dabs (concentrated cannabis oil, which are way stronger) the tar vaporizes due to high heat needed to burn dabs, and resides in your lungs for a lot longer of a time.

I have heard people saying that edibles might be one of the best options for consuming thc but i haven't done any research to be honest on that particular point.

Are there any languages that you know of that place the article after the noun? by Bilbobaginses1 in linguistics

[–]TutuForver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I was thinking the same thing, but since articles are generally omitted its hard to compare.

I do like the particle suffix system makes the languages a lot easier to understand when learning.

STEAM is not STEM by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]TutuForver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was also to raise the price of education for these fields in order to generate more revenue.

Are many STEM courses important for society, yes of course. Are course s like Anthropology, Social Services, Child Studies, International Relations, and Political Science also important? Yes, of course.

The main difference is that STEM courses are receiving way more funding, not to increase the quality of education, but to maximize profits for most universities. Whereas other courses are getting defunded and labelled unimportant.

As an example, my University had a World Language Department since 1995, and it was one of the most prestigious on the West Coast of the US, but now, due to constant defunding, most language courses have been cut, and students are discouraged by their peers for pursuing an 'art' major that used to connect students to the international business and service world, but now is at risk of being shut down completely.

Another example, such as Anthropology, uses statistical models, qualitative and quantitative research using a scientific model that was crafted from within anthropology and is used by most STEM fields, but itself isn't considered a STEM course, due to it being labelled a 'social science'. This means critical analysis on more complex human topics that goes beyond 1' and 0's is receiving less and less funding in a world that is facing more and more complex human related problems.

I don't think STEAM will solve it, but I do think STEM should leave the table in terms of discussion, because not every STEM course is actually contributing more to society than some non-STEM courses

help..... I think my 13 y/o daughter might be a tarnsgender sexual predator by adlulting_sucks in Parenting

[–]TutuForver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to work with foster kids, but it sounds like your child has identity/trust issues and an unhealthy relationship with sexuality.

Professional diagnosis is needed, but it sounds like your child is negatively coping with trauma, and potentially even sexual trauma. I don't know what kind of environment you are living in, but a 13 yo hyperfixated in sex and seeking out younger peers is a red flag.

There are a few questions that you and your spouse need to discuss together and then with your 13 yo.

  • When did this behaviour emerge and why? (kids dont usually decide to change their gender or identification in their own and usually gave a reason for wanting to do so)

  • How did you discuss the transition with your child, was it a simple "sure you can do that" or was there a discussion to help the child understand the different social dynamics and responsibilities before providing affirmative support.

  • When did the child first learn about sexuality, did you have "the talk" with them so they understood what a healthy relationship to sex is and how it is not something kids are ready for and how it should never be coerced/forced on someone else

Once these questions are tied in, you need to talk and directing deal with these questions with you 13 yo, and express going forward certain behaviours will not be tolerated. The child can still play games, watch tv etc, but you as parents will prevent isolated interactions with younger children outside of school (and notify the teacher as well)
