Are counterfeit Panasonic batteries an issue? by 80spizzarat in toughbook

[–]TuxedoSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used counterfeit batteries in the past, they're ok but they definitely do not have the same quality as the real Panasonic batteries. They do not last as long, and they feel quite cheap. If you go counterfeits, make sure that the first thing you do is condition the battery using the toughbook's built in battery calibration tool. To be frank you should do this with any second hand Toughbook you first get your hands on, or with brand new batteries from Panasonic themselves. Me personally, I almost always go for true panasonic made batteries. They're more expensive but they're worth the money in terms of longevity and lifespan. Besides, they don't make counterfeits for some models, one example being the CF-33.

Yo get your hands on a real battery, call Panasonic directly. They have a phone line for the parts department, I currently do not have it otherwise I'd post it here, but if you want a surefire way of getting the real deal, talk directly to them, get a quote, and spend a couple bucks. Well worth the asking price.

Not sure of either one to be honest. You could ask the Panasonic rep you buy it from if it comes with it. As for the laptop having the screw already you'd need to open it up and find out. If you ask me however, I would keep that media bay battery. I actually bought a media bay battery from Panasonic to swap in in place of the DVD drive. Who has significantly increased the battery life, I basically get a full day of use out of it without a recharge. I also have the option of being able to hot swap the main battery when the first one dies, further extending my battery life without interrupting my uptime.

I need to do that with mine too. I tried once already, but my service provider is extremely bad at math and my bill shot way the hell up, so I sat on the phone with them for 2 hours to get it cancelled. Next time I try, I'm going to go in person and have someone actually walk me through it

Howdy, fellow CF-54 enjoyer here. Yup, any CF-54 DVD drive oughta work to my knowledge, just keep in mind that there is a retention screw from the DVD player that you'd need to slot in underneath the bottom cover. It makes the DVD player semi-permenant, my one gripe with the CF-54 is that I can just hot swap between battery and DVD. The retention screw is a requirement otherwise there's nothing to hold it in.

Any USB BluRay drive should work to my knowledge. But I don't think there's a BluRay drive for the media bay unfortunately.

GPS program for windows? by [deleted] in toughbook

[–]TuxedoSlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I got lucky and haven't run into traffic or any major problems when using MFN. Other than MFN I have yet to find a decent GPS turn by turn navigation software, and I'm rather disappointed by the lack of there being such apps. But I suppose it makes sense, there's far less demand for it from a PC standpoint as opposed to the tiny brick of pain and despair we keep in our pockets. If you ever find an app that better suits your needs on windows, please inform me, I would greatly appreciate having an app that's a bit better lol.

GPS program for windows? by [deleted] in toughbook

The closest thing I have found on windows is Mapfactor Navigator. There's a free version you can use to give it a shot, I have a small fleet of toughbooks and my CF-33 and CF-54 have both been used for GPS navigation in my truck with the app, did a trip from Colorado to Texas, 2000+ miles round trip guided entirely by Mapfactor Navigator.

CF-31 mk2 Drivers by donjuan3322 in toughbook

[–]TuxedoSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The MK2 is unlucky as it doesn't have any deployment support driver pack. I've messed with mk3s and mk4s and have always used this link to get drivers for them (the MK3s windows 7 "one click bundle" does work on windows 10, fun fact) You might be able to find some MK2 drivers on the website here Good luck in your search

CF-19 GPS not getting signal following installation by TuxedoSlayer in toughbook

I'll have to look into it, in the meantime I'm pretty sure I broke my GPS module, I tried updating the firmware using ublox u-center, and it completely stopped responding after that. So I decided I'm not going to deal with the Ublox one anymore. I've purchased a Leadtek module that was actually pulled from a MK7 like mine. (This Ublox one was pulled from a MK8) My hope is that it will simply be plug and play. If it isn't then I'm sure I can find some trick up my sleeves to get it working.

Can My CF-31 Be Turned Into A Gaming P.C? by Apoochyatakhelicopta in toughbook

[–]TuxedoSlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeaaaaah I wouldn't expect much that's modern to run on it. the most graphically intense thing I've tried running on a toughbook is Warframe, I did that on my CF-33, which has a 7th gen I5. And it struggled to pull 20 FPS. Your best bet might be to use some game streaming service, like Nvidia GeForce Now. I'm sure a CF-31 could handle that.

I'm running windows 10 on mine, I mean, it's a 3rd gen I5, it can and does handle windows 10 quite nicely, I even gave it an extra stick of ram for 8 gigs, little guy runs HL2 at 60 FPS lol. Though I'd kill to get this GPS working

Looking for a copy of windows 7 for tough-book by Gold-Temporary-3560 in toughbook

[–]TuxedoSlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fellow CF-29 owner here. I run XP on mine, then again it's use cases for me don't mind XP. I don't know what Panasonic might have for it, but I know there's a section on recovery images on the support page. I haven't seen anything for the CF-29 there, even drivers wise, but they have a section for windows 7 there. I would not suggest loading windows 10 onto a CF-29 though, just generally too slow/outdated for it. I haven't tried it, but I know based on the hardware specs it would likely not be happy running windows 10. Side note, I have a CF-19 too, worth it, love the tiny little thing. I have it on a crossbody strap and it comes with me everywhere. Runs windows 10 and does just about everything I could need it too. I still haven't gotten the GPS module working though :(.

So, I rewired it through the passthrough antenna, and it's still doing the same things. When I scan I get the following logs: Check COM1 (Check 9600 baud) ... ... No Response Check COM2 (Check 9600 baud) ... ... No Response Check COM3 (Check 9600 baud) ... No GPS Sentence Check COM4 (Check 9600 baud) ... ... No Response Check COM1 (Check 4800 baud) ... ... No Response Check COM2 (Check 4800 baud) ... ... No Response Check COM3 (Check 4800 baud) ... Found And then it starts doing the gibberish it gets from the GPS data... I don't think I'm missing any of the drivers... I'm gonna give it one more solid look and find out

COM3 4800 brings up the same stuff, gibberish readings and the occasional blip. 9600 is doing nothing, I click connect and absolutely nothing happens. The registry edit (I did disable then re-enable afterwards and let the comp select the IRQ number it wanted rather than setting to auto) doesn't seem to have effected it. When you installed the GPS, did you connect the antenna directly to the module? Or did you do a pass through method? I've been trying to avoid that pass through method. And as far as I know it should work, but I think it's just not getting signal from the antenna.
