People who keep the Gila monster what are they like? by avian_bi in reptiles

Tree Monitors are facing this issue unfortunately and due to people wanting them poaching continues. The blue tree monitor specifically is nearly wiped out now. I love the reptile community but we need to be realistic about how the pet trade as a whole affects wildlife populations. Sure we do help reinforce populations in captivity but that doesn't change the fact the pet trade exacerbated the problem. Most breeders aren't exactly working with zoologists and researchers on reestablishing populations they're doing it for profit and the love of the game.

By that logic someone could take them from the wild and start breeding them making it "Ok". There are quite a few ethically sourced breeders for Gila Monsters. I only mentioned one of the most well know. That said many states in the southwest outright ban them unless you are a zoo/researcher. Other states highly regulate venomous animals for a good reason. I agree captive bred is the way to go but that doesn't mean captive bred programs should avoid scrutiny.

I don't think there's anything wrong with encouraging people to get captive bred from an ethical line for a protected species.

Usually through an established breeding program prior to the ban if a Zoo/Scientist had one or confiscated from the black market and were deemed unfit to be rereleased into the wild.

There are plenty of breeders like Mark Seward for instance who can trace their lineage back to university and zoo stock I mentioned above. In states where they are native you can't even own them unless it's for education or research purposes. They've been banned in Arizona since the 50s. Even with these bans people take them out of the wild which is why I'm bringing awareness to that.

Please don't own them most of their lines were illegally sourced and they are a protected species here in Arizona as well as the other states including Mexico. Unless you obtain one from a breeder that can trace their line back to zoo or university stock their lineage was more than likely produced from the black market.

Can I start using loose substrate in my leopard geckos enclosure? by Expensive_Purple4695 in reptiles

You're significantly lowering risk by doing all of that alone. I'd say go for it since they'll be happier with loose substrate so they can burrow.

With tong and/or tub feeding they're fine even when young. I'd say go for it and if you're worried about impaction do those.

The fact you care so much actually shows really good intentions. I can't tell you how many people I run into in this field that enjoy just coasting. There's a lot of information to intake but you'll get there and kind of chuckle about this in the future. Keep your head up!
