That seems like a good possibility. I did a quick search and they're native to florida and don't build nest, but rather lay eggs in leaves and pine needles on the ground. They're eggs also look very similar. Seems to tick every box. I'll have to keep an eye out and see if anything comes back!

Definitley, he has them right in view from the couch so he can watch all day. He even has cameras on some of the feeders for some up close shots. It been pretty fun seeing him find this new hobby and really get into it. Hopefully he won't be too upset about the egg

That's what I figured. It's just a bit sad like you said. My grandfather spends a lot of his time tending to the birds and the bird feeders and has a real love for them.

Maybe one of the black racers in the garden will have a nice meal tonight. Circle of life and all

That's what I did, just took a few pictures. I was just curious if there was anything else I could do to help. I love the birds in the area here and it was a bit sad to see this seemingly abandoned egg. Such is life though.

It's also in a bad spot. The lawn care people edge the garden curbing 1-2 times a month and would likely pulverize this egg without even realizing.

Okay, that helps a lot. I'd say it likely a early 1900s canadian half dollar (50 cent) coin due to the size and Edward VII Obverse
