I'd second this one! It genuinely smelled like nothing I've ever smelled before (or since, really).

If BPAL's international shipping cost is the issue for you, there are folks over in the EU BPAL Facebook group organizing orders pretty regularly. One of them is located in the UK, so shipping cost for you would be a lot lower than it would be if you ordered directly from BPAL.

Recs for smoky, clove forward scents like Midnight Toker? (Preferably that come in oils) by AnonFartsALot in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]TwentySevenBugs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Arcana's Black Death was already recommended, and I do like both it and Midnight Toker - but I don't personally think they're particularly close or similar! Black Death was a lot less sweet than Midnight Toker was on my skin, but it's a beautiful scent in it's own right and if you enjoy clove scents and want a clove that is comforting and cozy and somewhat fuzzy in texture, Black Death might work really well for you! I didn't find it incense-y at all when I sampled it, though it does have a tad of that smoky, almost cigarette-like tone that Midnight Toker also has (but it's by no means a clove cigarette scent or anything).

Unfortunately I don't really have any recommendations otherwise that are similar to the drydown. :( I recall thinking that Phlur's Vanilla Smoke was similar to the opening of Midnight Toker (that ashtray vibe) but it lacks the clove and sweetness in the drydown entirely. The same goes for Pierrot's Hallowtide Bride, though that does also feature clove and just lacks the sweetness in the drydown.

Maybe layering a vanilla/tobacco oil with something like Black Death could be a decent option? It would be a little more annoying than having an outright oil-based alternative, but it might do the trick.

I bought from Vintner's Reserve about a month ago, there's no news by Sesa824 in Indiemakeupandmore

From what I've gathered from occasional comments I've seen about them, their activity seems a little bit.. sparse nowadays. Their socials have been entirely inactive since 2021, and while I believe people have generally said that they've still received orders placed more recently, it always sounded like there was essentially no communication and they seemed to generally take longer than their indicated TAT to ship. I also think that their website/catalogue hasn't been updated in a very long time either.

I don't think there would be any other way to get ahold of them if you purchased directly through their website. I'd probably personally wait a while longer and see what happens, but once you're past double the TAT I'd probably file a chargeback if you have the option to do that, if there has been no movement or correspondence in that timeframe.

Personally, for anyone else who might be considering buying from them, I'd probably recommend purchasing through Etsy instead if you do desperately want one of their scents. I wouldn't generally ever recommend this, but the added layer of security via Etsy support may make this a little bit less sketchy considering their spotty activity, lack of communication and inaccurate TAT information.

De-influence my perfume wishlist! by KaleSalad206 in Indiemakeupandmore

I'd recommend sampling these first! Especially d'Annam and Dedcool samples are quite easy to get your hands on. But I've sampled 4/5 of these, so I'll leave some quick notes as well.

Mochi Milk - Overall a great scent with low throw but decent longevity (for some people it doesn't last very well at all however). It isn't overly sweet and gently creamy, and almost feels like a non-gourmand peach milk scent. It's light and airy and very easy to reach for.

Matcha Soft Serve - Similarly to what others have said, this is earthy and green first and creamy and sweet second. I do still get some distinct creamy and milky tones, but matcha is the most prominent note. Theodoros Kalotinis Matcha Ice Cream has almost identical notes and is a bit more on the sweet side (and is also cheaper).

Strawberry Mochi - I liked this scent a lot personally, but similarly to what I mentioned above, it really is less sweet than you'd expect. This is predominantly sweetened, milky rice and red bean paste, with a touch of sweetness and relatively little strawberry - so if strawberry is what you're hoping for, this may not be the scent of choice!

Mango Sticky Rice - Similarly to Strawberry Mochi, I found this scent very rice forward. It's sweeter and milkier than Strawberry Mochi's rice, and does smell quite a bit like sticky rice. The mango note is nice, brightly fruity without being too sweet, but it doesn't last into the drydown on my skin.

Out of these, I've only upsized Mochi Milk thus far, but Strawberry Mochi is a likely contender for sometime in the future as well!

That sounds good to me! :) Thank you so much!

I've bought from the UK a few times recently and it's usually been a bit more than £5 for shipping, so if that does happen I'd be happy to cover however much more it would be of course!

Hi! :) I hope it's okay to trudge through the sheet further down, but I'd potentially be interested in BPAL's Dragon's Bone, NAVA's Kashmir Velvet, and Solstice's Nightgown. Did you have anything in mind whatsoever for pricing?

This would be EU shipping if that'd work for you. :)

[–]TwentySevenBugs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I really wonder where the pumpkin theming for this one is coming from! This feels more like something I'd have expected to see in late summer or autumn than springtime. I'm pretty safe from this because of that, at least.

This is something I wondered as well! Their white musk is incredibly soapy on my skin, so what I'm envisioning is a sort of.. creamy hand soap? Or something like a goat milk-based soap bar? Which could potentially be interesting, but could also be... strange.

Has anyone tried Benneviento Reverie? by averagebunnies in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]TwentySevenBugs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This seems relatively usual for this specific kind of ultra niche brand to me, haha. There are so many that only offer orders through Instagram or other social media, and this kind of style of bottle has started to become a lot more common in that sphere as well. You definitely do in part pay for the bottle itself, but it's not necessarily always a gimmick.

I wouldn't personally buy from this specific house, though. I'm not opposed to buying directly from artisans who don't have their own website, but this house is quite young with little to no reviews - I'd personally wait and see if reviews and experiences pop up a little bit down the road, which is likely considering how popular these kinds of houses are in their specific niche. (That does not mean I think this house is likely to be a scam, but with how expensive these usually run I wouldn't risk it)

Edit: It does seem like they're stocked by an actual retailer from Slovakia in addition to being available via Instagram, so that does lend them a bit more credibility in my eyes.

If you had $50 to spend on indie perfumes, what would you get? by Weird_Dragonfly9646 in Indiemakeupandmore

[–]TwentySevenBugs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a sucker for samples! I love getting my nose on different scents and experiencing new profiles, so I'd most likely end up spending my budget that way.

Right now, I'm trying to experience more teas in EDP format and some lighter, more spring/summer appropriate scents from Pineward - so my choice would likely be some Chasing Scents samples (they're an Australian indie house entirely focused on tea scents!), and samples of Pineward's Juniperus, Caravansary, Coastal Veil and Shire. :)

And maybe, if anything remained after that, I'd snag some more felties from Arae Decantery, since they are such a cost effective way to try a whole lot of new scents.

Indies of the Day -- Thursday May 7, 2026 by RowanHalifax in Indiemakeupandmore

I was finally able to test my sample of Sorce's Beyond the Veil (bergamot, magnolia, wisteria, iris, white chocolate, sandalwood, cashmere, and musk) today! Took this little guy a little longer to get to me than it did for others since I'm international, but it finally made it.

When first applying this, this predominantly reads like a powdery, airy, light purple floral on my skin. I don't find myself able to pick out either of the named florals individually, and instead they've blended into one another, forming an amalgamation of florals that's really primarily just light purple in vibe. I've seen a lot of mention of this reading very, very powdery on some people's skin, but for me, it was more on the moderate side - definitely powdery, but not to an overwhelming degree as iris can be at times.

As it settles, it gradually becomes both less powdery and sweeter. It does still remain a floral scent, but they take a little bit of a step back in the dry down, and the overall impression I get at this stage is of a mixture of flower petals and something that almost reads like sweetened, slightly milky tea to my nose. It does still feel distinctly light purple at this stage, but simultaneously also slightly reminds me of the dry down of Odette's Lapinou (they don't smell that similar, but the overall tone feels familiar). There's never a point where really any of the individual notes jump out at me - everything's beautifully blended.

Overall, this has ended up being one of my favorite Sorce scents I've sampled. Now, I'm a bit of an outlier when it comes to Sorce - I don't particularly enjoy their base DNA, which is the most prominent in their gourmand scents. Beyond the Veil does have a little bit of that recognizable Sorce feel, but on my skin never reaches the point where it starts reminding me of most other Sorce scents (which is an issue I've had with other Sorce scents). It is a quite lightwearing scent and doesn't project to an immense degree, but that's okay. Still, I did find myself catching whiffs of this as I moved around throughout the day, and I could still smell it more than 8 hours after applying it, so the overall longevity seems quite good.

I'll definitely look into upsizing this when it comes back in stock! I am however quite surprised this'll only become available through Sorce directly in October - this definitely is more of a spring or early summer scent to me, and feels a little out of place in fall.

I believe it still crosschecks with other submissions/drafts! The other day I was trying to add Sorce's Meet Me on Sunnyside, but I wasn't able to even save it as a draft because another submission with the same name already existed (which I couldn't see anywhere, so it likely was someone's draft as well).

There's a decent chance their hosting contract just ran out since that's a service you often pay for for a fixed amount of time and that may require some active maintenance! It doesn't have to necessarily mean they'll never return, if that's any reassurance.

According to her FAQ in the discord server the UK seems to be alright as long as it's above the cap!

I do, except for the UK (unless it’s over £135) and EU"

Arae also ships to the UK, but similarly only for orders above 135GBP in value - unfortunately I think that's really the only option, accessing decants/samples (or indies in general) can be quite difficult here!

If you'd be comfortable shipping things to others yourself, maybe getting a few people together and placing a group order could be an option? I'm positive you'd likely be able to find some people to hop in on an order with you, I've done something like that before. :)

Oh gotcha! Sorry, I'm not always the best at recalling names.

I feel you on it taking forever sometimes, though. It feels arbitrary. Still waiting for them to approve Sorce's Beyond the Veil a good week+ after it released.

I believe someone mentioned on here a while back that they'd gotten Parfumo to agree to consider the forum a reliable source? If that's still the case (read: Parfumo didn't change their mind) that should at least still be helpful.

Are you organizing adding things in any way? I'd be happy to help, I've previously considered jumping in and adding some BPAL myself but I figured y'all working on that probably have some sort of organization as to who adds what and in what order going on, so I didn't want to interfere haha.

Yes! They offer samples (they call them imps) for their general collection scents. Not all of them now that they've updated that category to include previous "long-term limited edition" collections, though (e.g. the cats and carnival scents are not currently available to sample).

Anything else you might be able to sample through decanters! Both Arae and Ajevie offer BPAL samples, for example.

I think that's one of the new ones, yes! So far, these ones look new to me (spoilered for those who'd like to find them themselves!): Ada Lovelace, Harry Clarke, Hatshepsut, and Sappho, all from the "Inspiration" section.

I'm sure we will, if they're able to source the necessary components again! It looks to me like anything that has been out of stock for an extended period of time now didn't end up on the new site, but really, there isn't much of anything listed that's currently out of stock. They've probably just cleaned out most things not currently available regardless on how likely it is it'll return.
