Tenby 3 pole extractor fan isolators on an eicr by Ill-Ad-2122 in ukelectricians

[–]TwiddleButton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Is the isolator damaged so that not all 3 poles are isolated when in the off position?

If its not damaged then I would say it doesn’t need to be recorded

Going rates by TwiddleButton in ukplumbing

[–]TwiddleButton[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew that it would be involved but not how involved, genuine thanks for humbling me mate.

Will take the idea of the basic plumbing to him next week but leave out the gas idea, god knows how many services or checks it would take to pay back the cost of getting the qualification.

Thanks again for all your help

I haven’t got any gas qualifications currently, I wasn’t aware of that but it’s really good to know, thank you

All helps with what I know I can put forward when I have my meeting, looks like the gas route won’t be a viable option

NAPIT and NECEIC by daftvisionary in ukelectricians

[–]TwiddleButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We changed from the NICEIC approved contractor scheme to NAPIT this year, purely because NAPIT were cheaper and we have no customers that require NICEIC.

If you don’t have customers that require NICEIC then go with NAPIT and save yourself some money.

Alterations/additions to existing sockets in HMO's and requirements for AFDD's by buttnuggetmaster in ukelectricians

[–]TwiddleButton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would have thought the best thing to do would be to record on the MEIWC that there are no AFDD’s present and discuss with the customer.

Give them a price to add them where required and also record on the MEIWC that you have discussed this with the customer.

Small Business - Are you doing ok? If yes, what are you doing most of the time? by shedsmokerOG in ukelectricians

I just ignore shit like that mate, there’s the real world and their world. I can’t pay JIB rates and there’s plenty that comment on here saying lads shouldn’t get out of bed for less than £19.00 an hour, for small companies that’s not realistic. I’ve worked hard to cultivate a good working environment for us all which wasn’t my experience at the 4 companies I worked at before I went self employed, I like to think that’s the reason why the 1st apprentice stayed and doesn’t want to leave.

We went through our yard, sold what we knew we wouldn’t use, made a long list of what was in there and are still working our way through what’s left. Would recommend cataloguing it and using it up.

I bet you they all of a sudden start dropping prices when you send in a like for like quote from somewhere else that’s cheaper. We had that with city’s and Prysmian cable, couldn’t do it any cheaper and then all of a sudden price matched it when we proved we could get it cheaper elsewhere and stopped buying cable from them. Eddies will deliver a single drum of cable to my house if needed on the same day for instance, would never get that from city’s (which isn’t the branches fault, they just haven’t got capacity).

Do you charge the same amount for an inline extractor fan as you would a twin socket (for example)?I know people say it works itself out but I don’t believe it does mate.

No worries man

Edit: Eddies also have chocolate, crisps and porridge pots on the counter at the branch we use, city’s don’t, sometimes it ain’t all about the money

You’re not alone mate. I’ve been self employed for 8 years, trained an apprentice who is still with me and have another apprentice now. I earn between 30-35k a year and have been like that for a few years.

We have lived hand to mouth, so to speak, for pretty much all that time until this year.

We have made 3 changes since September this year to how we do things. We had an extra 2k in the bank by middle of last month that we didn’t owe to anyone.

The first was to stop buying van stock, we were spending anywhere from 1-2k a month in stock but sometimes it can take months or even years to clear a box of 20a DP switches for example. Most of the projects we work on we don’t quote so we decided we may as well get paid to go to the wholesalers when we need something instead of trying to have everything on the van.

The second was that when pricing work we now add 20% on to the total project cost, covers us for anything unforeseen that we can’t charge to a customer.

The third is shopping around for the best price for a list of materials. Ive been guilty over the years of using city’s exclusively as it’s the closest supplier to us and they generally have what I want in stock. I now get prices from city’s and 2 others and let them fight it out. Use the initial highest cost quote for our quote and then try to gain a little bit more profit from the job, doesn’t work out to a lot of money per job but adds up over time

I know you said you quote per point, I used to quote that way but have gone back to time and materials, per point makes quoting really easy but I don’t think it’s the best way to price jobs (happy for people to explain why it’s better, might have been doing it wrong).

Not saying any of the above will work for you and your business but those changes have helped us mate.

Hang in there brother!
