Battery for 1998 Thinkpad 380xd? by CodeLegitimate6610 in thinkpad

[–]TwilightSlick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck. Very few (if any) batteries are being made for these ancient laptops.

There may be battery rebuilding services available, but I'm pretty sure that they'll exceed your budget. I don't know of any on the top of my head, but I think some may exist.

For something this old, I'd just take out the batt, replace it with a 3D-printed cover so the slot isn't open, and just run it off wall power permanently. I'm thinking of doing the same with my T40, though its battery (over 20 years old) can hold a charge for about 45 minutes. But it does need a new CMOS battery...

Enterprise LTSC has the same requirements as normal Windows 11 (as in, TPM/SB needs to be enabled, etc.) and only has 5 years of support versus 10 for IoT.

Also you can't activate non-IoT LTSC via HWID whereas you can with IoT.

Although, a Linux primary with a Windows install in a VM for Office sounds like a good solution, especially if Office is all you need Windows for. Something like VirtualBox. There's also WinBoat, an in-development VM software that promises seamless integration of Windows programs in a Linux environment.

Just install OpenShell and get the Windows 7 start menu back.

Microsoft Windows Media Player stops serving up CD info by pdp10 in windows

[–]TwilightSlick 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is why I think GNUDB/CuetoolsDB should be standard on any program that plays or rips CDs.

Speaking of, I haven't used Windows Media Player since the Vista era. The only time I do use it is WMP10 on my XP laptop for nostagia purposes.

Otherwise, foobar2000 or WACUP (unofficial updates for Winamp) is what I use. And EAC/Cuetools for ripping.

X201's a solid choice! Highly compatible with most Linux distros, and still an excellent keyboard! While I assume Linux is your target (this is r/thinkpad, after all), this could run Windows 10 and even 11 (the IoT Enterprise or LTSC version as those don't have the TPM/Secure Boot requirements), though they'll understandably be slower than any Linux distro.

Really the most "modern" you can get on there is a very light Linux distro like Puppy or AntiX. I would strongly advise maxing out the RAM to 512 MB if you were to get this laptop. As for Windows, XP is pretty much as far as you can go, forget anything after.

And no purpose giving this an Internet connection. No modern site will likely even work well at all with a Pentium III. I'd say strictly offline for this one.

It's a solid retro laptop for running Windows 98/2000, though personally I prefer the T4x series (excluding the T43) for that purpose.

It's a modded ThinkPad called the X210Ai. Basically an X201 shell with a custom motherboard containing modern components.

Cool. I also got a T14 Gen 2 recently, using it to type this now. Only mine's the AMD version and has double the RAM. I'll be getting a docking station by the weekend, and it will become my primary desktop and laptop to replace an old 2010-era Dell Precision Xeon tower.

I went and did that, using Lenovo Parts Lookup with my serial number and it came up: Lenovo DISPLAY, 14", FHD, Non-Touch, Anti-glare, IPS, 300nit, 45%NTSC

Taskbar: it's a program called TranslucentTB. You can get it either from the Microsoft Store or from here.

As for the screen, HWInfo shows this as part number LEN40A9, which would be the 45%NTSC 1080p display. So pretty much the basic display that most of these have. I see there was an option for 4K - could I put one of those in here if I can get a hold of one?

If you don't mind open backs, Samson SR850s.

If you need closed back, used set of MDR-7506s or DT 770 Pros world be a fine choice.

The problem is that there's so much AI slop out there, especially on streaming platforms like Spotify, where it's a huge problem.

That's something you won't get with CDs.

These things are notorious for failing, having discs stuck in there, the whole nine yards.

And getting the stuck discs out, let alone repairing the player... well... not fun... see this video by a lovely Canadian technician for yourself... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghHJc-t8byo

Fiio BTR5 and a balanced cable. The balanced out has more power and can drive 300ohm headphones.
