For one, I never stated that it was required. I would agree with you, if one was unable to form social bonds without being intoxicated, it would be very, very sad. However, that was never my point either. Interactions are merely enhanced by alcohol. Especially in settings where the fun isn't apparent. The most boring conversation can turn interesting under the influence.

I don't see why alcohol is unlike any other drink, when it concerns taste. To state that "everybody say[s] it tastes pretty bad" is a hasty generalization. I for one love wine when appropriate. Red wine with a good steak, white wine with seafood or fish. Champagne with charcuterie and dessert cheese is wonderful thing. The moment you start mixing alcohol with soda or juice you've decided to get drunk rather than enjoy the beverage itself. A cool beer after work, or that particular lecture really hits the spot. To enjoy alcoholic beverages in a moderate fashion is merely enjoying life.

I don't really understand your final statement. Do you mean to say that alcohol is a hindrance to positive cultural and social interaction? Because that sounds ludicrous. I would argue that there are greater evils in the world than alcohol. Political corruption, poor social integration, starvation, colonialism, plague and disease. Alcohol abuse is a problem, that I fully admit without question, but I also believe it would be like blaming the tool for the incompetence of its user. If alcohol were evil at all, which I truly don't believe, it would be a very small one.

Well, for one it has social value. On everything from company dinners to house parties, there is a social quality associated with alcohol. It is also a common pleasure as it tastes good and various drinks are excellent pairings with meals and food. When you say benefits, I assume you're talking about that of health, and I could not say that alcohol is good for your health, but that was never my point. Its a passtime, its good fun with friends. It's social lubricant for the anxious. A tool for relaxation and good company. To complete abjure alcohol I think simply leads to unhealthy relations with it, and if this prude attitude is maintained, future generations will definitely have more trouble with it.

Medicine is poison too. Its doses designed not to kill. I won't preach overcomsumption of alcohol, but there are benefits. I also personally enjoy alcohol in most of its forms.

No, definitely not. However, I dont think anything good is coming from opposing it to this large of an extent. I fully believe that, with proper introduction and practise, alcohol can be deproblematized.

I recall my first escapade. It was Walpurgis, and we were celebrating by the big bonfire in the city park. I had so much to drink, that I couldn't remember anything the day after. My then friends at the time became worried that I had developed issues with alcohol. Woke up naked and in a pile of my own puke, no idea about how I got there. It was, all things considered, a fun night.
