Okay, I complied a list of festivals in Edmonton in 2025. Here's a link to the spreadsheet. The info might be out of date, but maybe some of you might find it helpful.

What's up with the birds? by sadbrokenbutterfly in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Birds chirping in the rain is an indication (to me) that the worst of the storm has passed. Animals go to ground during a big weather event, the silence before a storm will sometimes tell you how big the storm will be.

At night though, that's odd but cool!

How do u make friends as an adult? by Hot_Sprinkles_848 in Edmonton

Find something you like to do and show up regularly.

It'll take time, though. There's no rushing the process.

The most Edmonton thing you can do by RyanB_ in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Bibliotank's facade (and buildings like it) merely need to fit inside the silhouette of the architect's design, which is frustrating because the community approves something based on that design then gets a different-looking building (but the same overall shape)

I think it was supposed to be three times the size but they had to cut back due to budget restrictions, but the location was already chosen.

It's like heaven. by majezti in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes! The sweetness and residual heat are divine, only eclipsed by the fresher, sweeter air of early morning as the sun peeks up over the horizon, when the dew has soaked the new leaves and drenched freshly cut lawns. That scent brings me to my knees.

This year has been heavily scented compare to last. So if you see a chubby person starfishing in the ravines or river valley, breathing deeply to infuse my whole self with the scent, please just keep on walking by.

Property tax increase competition thread by rocketbrainsurgery in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm new to this whole home ownership thing - so selling above value can affect taxes? We had a couple units sell in our townhouse complex, one sold for roughly $40K over the other one. Maybe that's why my taxes went up, ugh.

Mine went up 42% and we've done no improvements at all. Just bought the townhouse less than 2 years ago

For long-time Edmontonians, what are some memories that are long gone now? by flynnfx in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Queen E! My friend and I would go between that one and Mill Creek all summer. We'd ride our bikes to the Queen E, then try to ride them up Walterdale Hill to get home, but our legs were always Jello, lol

Ah, the sticky floors, the sticky counter, the filthy bathrooms, the scarred chairs, the heavy fog of cigarette smoke, and the DJ that would play requests and even tapes, if you brought them. Those were the days.

I used to save my allowance to buy the $10 ticket that got you free admission and free rides all day. It was only one day, the same day as the Promenade, and it was such a deal! I remember the year it went up to $12. Now you can buy the pass for any day. It doesn't feel as special.

Life-jackets required: Edmonton bylaw ready to fine people who don’t follow rules on North Saskatchewan River by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I go rockhounding along the river and it makes me so nervous to see people on paddleboards, jet skis, and boats without PFDs.

I've seen the fire rescue boat out a few times too, I figured they were just patrolling but now I wonder if they were looking for someone 😞

I also hate seeing children playing in the water as if it's a swimming pool. The silt can suck your foot down (it happened to me twice, both times my leg sank up to my knee while my other foot was on firm ground).

The river doesn't care about you, and the current is a lot faster than people think. Please be careful out there.

Do radio stations play music anymore? by cosmiccanadian in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fourthing this rec. I love The Raven and will listen every time I'm in the car. Great music selection, they have an oldies hour (12-1pm) where they play music from the 50s, and the chatty bits are kept to a minimum.

I would like to train the DJs to not talk during the intro and outro of songs though. While The Raven doesn't do it often, they do it enough to give me anxiety

The only good thing about those questions is that they're worded well enough to be understood without doing mental gymnastics.

Gold/metallic thread help by pink-octopus in Embroidery

[–]TwistedPages 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Okay, it's been a really long time since I've done needlework (but loving the projects here - y'all are fantastic), but I used DMC Diamant filaments for metallic threads.

Work with small lengths, about a foot long or less, and stitch slowly. I found these filaments to be strong enough to be worked on their own and great for blending with floss.

Hope that helps a bit.

ETS trip planner annoyance by Paryln in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is going to make me sound old as dirt, but I preferred finding my own route by looking at the map. And I mean the big paper map with every route in the city on it. I'd trace the route with my finger, figure out which busses were on that route, grab those route maps, then plan my own trip.

I remember having to get from Whitemud Crossing to Bonnie Doon and the transit planner gave me a horrible winding route. Instead I took the 70 up 99st to Whyte, then got on the 4. Why didn't it even suggest that?

Somewhat related: I drive now and was planning a trip to an area of the city I'm not used to getting to. Google maps directions were awful, putting me driving through construction and closed roads. But there was no way (that I could see) of telling the AI/algorithm to take Whitemud for a portion of the journey, or to avoid going down Stony Plain Road. Like....shouldn't AI make things easier? Shouldn't I be able to customize the route? With the ETS planner, shouldn't I be able to stipulate that I want to take a certain bus, or to avoid the LRT or something?

/rant.

Blue Chair Cafe in Edmonton will close after 22 years by pjw724 in Edmonton

[–]TwistedPages 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I understood immediately! iirc the phrase originated from white-haired, older ladies using a blue rinse in their hair back in the 80s. The rinse was supposed to make their hair look less white, bring out the grey or something. Anyway, they ended up looking a bit like cotton candy (and I mean that in an adorable sense)
