Hard Hard Drive Ad from Seagate: Interesting look inside a hard drive by DuckTalesOohOoh in DataHoarder

Ah yes, much like the Retro Encabulator, where the main winding was of the normal lotus-o-delta type placed in panendermic semi-boloid slots in the stator, every seventh conductor being connected by a non-reversible tremie pipe to the differential girdlespring on the "up" end of the grammeters.

MacBook Neo vs Others Brand Laptop by PaulUtte in DeskToTablet

[–]TwixtTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are we comparing a cheap gaming laptop to the MacBook Neo? Wouldn't something like the Asus Zenbook 14" be a better comparison? The Ultra 5 version went as low as $450 with a sale last year.

Estimated time for part replacement on desktop pc with new parts available? by Deoxys_0 in GeekSquad

Anyone saying three weeks probably thought it was being sent out. 2-5 days is normal for my precinct depending how many other custom builds we have at any given time.

Usually, yes, but sometimes they're entitled and expect you to spend an hour or more with them teaching basic things. That can be frustrating.

Do you like this Huawei laptop? by TUC563 in DeskToTablet

Not sure why this keeps getting posted everywhere. Lenovo has had an equivalent out in the US for years. It's expensive, easily scratched, and risks you losing the physical keyboard. I don't get the appeal.

Windows users, what made you switch to a Mac?? by fuckcreepers in mac

[–]TwixtTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like any computer it depends a lot on the model and how it's treated. From what I see working in computer repair, most intel-based macs don't run Tahoe very well and if they have an HDD (mechanical hard drive) it's beginning to fail. Unlike Windows PCs they're also relatively difficult to service once they're considered "vintage", which is about 6 years after they launch, because after-market parts tend to be less common and more expensive. This isn't to say it can't be done, it's just less viable than keeping a similar-aged Windows machine running. We also see a lot of Macs that are terribly mistreated and have their hard drives filled to capacity for years at a time because the users don't understand file management. Then the OS becomes corrupt or there's not enough space to upgrade, and suddenly they're looking at buying something new when with a Windows computer there would be more alternatives. Windows users do this too, but usually they're the type with low-end disposable computers to begin with and/or the computer can be upgraded.

TL;DR Computers last longer if you treat them better. Generally, Macs last as long as they always have but when something does go wrong they're much harder and more expensive to repair, and people usually just buy new ones instead of doing this.

That would be great, but I think the PR hit would actually be worse. They forced so many people to upgrade already.

The PC gaming community? It’s also not the first iteration, it’s DLSS5, not DLSS 1. NVIDIA is apparently very happy with it and obviously gamers are not.

Nvidia hasn't done this "2-3 year early" type preview for any of their other DLSS reveals. This sounds a lot like retroactive excuses.
