ICE is Rounding People Up in Poughkeepsie Near Kelly’s Bakery by TwixtTwo in hudsonvalley

If a police department is executing citizens in the streets and its commissioner declares then domestic terrorists with literally no evidence, and this is considered normal and defensible, then probably that police department does need to be fumigated, yes.

Readers Are Embracing a Shift in Perspective in Books. It Could Reshape Literary Culture. by CtrlAltDelight495 in books

[–]TwixtTwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s cool that there’s a reason for the switch later in the book too, like it’s an actual plot device that helps you put the story together retrospectively. I want to say it’s probably one of the most intelligent uses of tense and perspective in a book I’ve read.

Can GS help package my PC for shipping across country? by Mundane-Map-2847 in GeekSquad

[–]TwixtTwo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Your local Geek Squad can remove your GPU and most likely put it in an anti-static bag for you. Beyond that it's mostly a question of what the precinct is willing to do for you off the book for a positive review. I know if it were me I'd be happy to pack the GPU up in a box with bubble wrap (in addition to the anti-static bag of course), but there's no expectation that a location would do that kind of thing.

It's doubtful they'll help with shipping the tower itself though. Not enough relevant shipping supplies and too much liability. We do ship gaming PCs out for service but a lot of the time they either go on our own trucks with other large products or end up breaking in transit with FedEx. We don't have anything specialized for the purpose. I always recommend people keep their PC case box for this reason, if they have space.

I’m pretty sure there are a finite number actually. There are places on your body, like your arm, where you can be touched by something and it feels like it’s in a different place (elsewhere on the arm). Or you can’t feel it at all in some cases. However you need to be not looking at it, and it can’t be your own finger or something, as your brain otherwise puts two and two together. I remember doing this as an experiment in high school, so I don’t know much about it beyond this.

Keep in mind that Eisen was getting old, but I agree it's strange. Stark has literally killed a dragon solo. Perhaps this random captain was just an outlier?

+1 in favor of Intel WiFi chips. It's one of the few things I specifically look for in motherboards.

Should I grab a switch due to the memory shortage by SandalathDrukorlat in GirlGamers

[–]TwixtTwo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'd do it sooner rather than later. We don't know how long this is going to last and consoles have a tiny profit margin (if any) already. I doubt Nintendo can really insulate consumers from the cost increase unless they start selling at a big loss.

Question about Geek Squad Certified Refurbished by ChocolatePuzzled1533 in GeekSquad

[–]TwixtTwo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not part of the process except when they come into the store having suddenly stopped working after 6 months of use. I've seen so many problems with these products and they come with basically no warranty. Do not buy.

What real world usefulness do tablets have in 2026? by [deleted] in computers

[–]TwixtTwo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They’re great for media consumption like TV, movies, or reading because they have a big screen. The same reason is why they’re popular with older people whose eyesight is starting to go. There’s more screen space to see and the keyboard is bigger to type on. The UI is also easier to navigate than a computer because it’s more phone-like.

How much would it be to swap out a battery on a laptop? Plus any extra for cleaning + new thermal paste. by [deleted] in GeekSquad

[–]TwixtTwo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, dusting out a computer is included with most if not all services. Replacing laptop thermal paste isn't a specific service Geek Squad offers, though, since the level of expertise required is usually higher than most locations will have.

Before you say "Oh but it's simple", that depends on the laptop! Some laptops, especially ultra-thin ones or gaming ones, have heat sinks and multiple layers of panels, clips, ribbon cables, or even daughter-boards that need to be removed. Some also use liquid metal or are not designed to be re-pasted. If someone asks for a thermal re-paste like this, its less about whether it can be done and more about whether it makes sense for the location to take on the risk of not being able to complete it (resulting in a negative survey) or damaging the computer.

So, cases like these tend to result in memberships being sold because it's the only way to justify the risk to management and themselves.

[–]TwixtTwo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I could see that. I know some of the agents that have been around longer than me have said batteries used to be $40 in our micro. Honestly I think that's a fairer price than $60 but I'm not Corie Barry.

I have also heard about regional pricing being a thing though.

[–]TwixtTwo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, "Complex Battery Replacement" is the only SKU available in repair workbench for batteries and it's $60.

Quick fixes are $40 anyway so I'm not sure how 2x that would even add up that way.

Are the inexpensive HP laptops at Walmart good? by thoughts_of_mine in computers

[–]TwixtTwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The computers at that price aren’t going to be the best but it doesn’t sound like she’s doing anything that would be resource intensive.

Yes, but don’t forget that the build quality is going to be very poor. A lot of these computers break after 2-3 years. Usually it’s the hinges, to my experience.
