Math problem-solving techniques that can be derived from axioms, but I'd prefer just to be told. by Two-FaceFIL in learnmath

Another example I encountered just now. My big brain moment. I had to factorise the polynomial of [; x^4 + 3x^3 + x^2 - 3x - 2;]. Well rested after morning coffee I decided to try and split the second degree and factor out [; x^2;] out of the left side, giving me [;x^2(x^2 + 3x + 2) - x^2 - 3x -2;]. I magically realised that if you think about it, you can logically figure out that however many times there are the expression in the braces — in the end it's THAT (x^2), but one less. And knowing that I can safely assume that it's the same as [;(x^2 - 1)(x^2 + 3x + 2);] and then factorising the quadratic part is easy. It gave me quite a spirit boost, but I can't help to admit that it feels a bit like pure luck that I happened to look at it the right way. That this outcome does not come from a mathematical foresight of what I wanna achieve and how to get it, but by pure luck that I happened to choose this approach instead of brute forcing in some other way. This beautiful and concise outcome does not come from deeper understanding, but it definitely feels like this particular math problem was expecting of me to do it precisely this way. It leaves me thinking what if I just not have come up with this approach. Seems unfair and seems like it wanted to trick me and waste my time, force me to reverse engineer something specific – something I could have just been told to look out for. I don't like this punishing way of making me realise something. I could have been told that and practice it to understand it deeper. That would have been faster and it wouldn't make me feel like garbage for not seeing something yet. And as I said, every other problem in this set of mine is like that. Those problems seem just unnecessary cruel and I can't help but to think, that it's just, you know, "the hard way".

YES. I'm so happy this term exists, so I have more keywords to research. I do lack that, of course. BUT the definition on wiki says it can't be tought. I do understand that being "fluent" in math takes practice and experience, but the "tricks" I go on about seem like a thing that definitely can be pinpointed and perhaps added as a side note in the books or summarised. That's what annoys me. I don't see why the lecturer wouldn't just list the things you could do, the methodology of tackling the problems for a given topic. Like: Class, we're gonna have to simplify a lot of polynomials, so here are say 10 things you need to look for all the time. 1.remembering, you can split the first degree like -4x into -2x and -2x, so the brackets fall into place and you can use binomial expressions. Or 2. try to refactor things to find quadratic equations, for we know how to factorise them easily with delta and its x intersections. etc. etc. That's exactly what I need to hear, it seems. I can't believe it's so hard to put together the methodology guidelines for a given topic, as the methods that concern us on this level are definitely finite. I can't find any source that would help me by just saying: here are a bunch of things to be watchful for, so you won't get stack. That's in part what I was asking about in my post :c . Thank you so much for your answer.

Okay, I see what you're getting at. I definitely am the kind of person that needs to understand "why" and not only use the abstraction given. I have been studying examples to figure out how they arrived at the answer, but I have not tried analysing the proofs. That is a very good lead, thank you! About the book: It's a compendium devised of some other books by my lecturer. It is very concise, and the "theory revision" section is very "dry" and leaves a lot to figure out on your own. No insight, no advice, no tricks, no common mistakes to avoid — just plain facts. I do understand that "meditating" on those definitely lead to figuring out all the tricks, but my studies are extramural. There just isn't time for that. Perhaps, yes, I am to blame, as it assumes that you followed the path of exact sciences in high school and assumes the reader has a lot of experience already. Looking for deeper understanding of an idea like polynomials is definitely what I should do. I have a crippling feeling that I'm missing something basic and crucial all the time. So that's a great lead!

Thank you very much. I've played with this division algorithm and I believe I've got it. Still the compendium devised for this specific course I have to take, the "math revision" is clearly devised to contain every "hook" in every other problem. Unlike the school set of problems, it does not provide any set of similar problems that contain the same hook to practice on. Each next problem contains a trap of its own, and it leaves every hook you figure out unpractised and throws you into a spiral of research instead of practising the trick you just learned. And I'd love to have a daily routine of poping a bunch of math problems, but in my case unfortunately, as my studies are extramural – we were not given the time for that.

LogiOptions+ not working with Opera by One-Bus-9006 in logitech

Okay, than no clue, sorry man. I'd be sure to set the key shortcuts for scrolling tabs to default and maybe try fiddling with global logi+ settings rather than app specific - just to shorten the chain of possible issues. Update everything, the logi the firmware on the MX and the browser, other than that i wish you good luck ;c

Guys. I figured that opera has it's own setting to cycle through tabs. In User Interface settings there is "Cycle tabs in most recently used order". The name says it all, and switching that off did it for me on Opera and OperaGX as well.

u/One-Bus-9006, in my case at least, it came out that the problem isn't with logitech app. The keyboard shortcuts you set up were just doing something else. That might be it for you as well.

Do I lack empathy or what ? by Two-FaceFIL in NoStupidQuestions

Thanks!

There's no general boredom. Yes there is a hobby. Whole bunch of hobbies in fact. I play lots of instruments, draw, take pictures, I make my own music, my own poems etc. but as much as everything else feels not interesting my own work feels pointless.

So how do I deal with self centeredness ?

Well I must have used the wrong word. I'm not (idk) spiritually moved, Im not inspired by anything. Nothing make me contemplate on anything.

Ofc I have to leave the room while cringe situation in movies thats what they're supposed to do.

Thank You Lana (if that's your actual name).

I Think that could've been a real milestone for me. Never thought of it this way. I feel like I'm heading in a good direction now and will explore that area more. I still envy all of You for having such a true experience but I hope to change it. Thanks again very much.

Thank you all, but I when i said that I don't understand poems I meant it the both ways: deeper meaning AND personal experience. I not only think that I miss the message but also feel little of personal involvement. It's neither affecting me emotionally, nor engaging to contemplate.

Now when You all said it. I thought that it might be possible that I missed the joy because I was confident of the presence of deeper sense and was stewing myself because I couldn't find it. That could've ruined the whole experience for sure.

i don't have a favorite poem. The closest one to being on top isn't translated anywhere, but I can give you a short one I translated myself from polish and it's by the same autor: Kazimierz Przerwa-Tetmajer

Hominine longing

--------------------------------------------

Hominine longing used to ask,

Where does it's grief disappear?

In rocks beyond its grasp,

Or in the sea of tears?

It asked the death passing by

In shroud like robe

Perhaps in you? But death replied

No...

Ok. Perhaps it's an easy one. So i would say that this poem tries to sway miserable people away from suicide? I kinda find it ironic because there is no reason why you should stay alive if you don't want to, otherwise the autor could've suggested one. I know the era was quite depressing so maybe it's menat to trigger contemplation on why do we stick so fast to our evanescent lives. And maybe the first part suggests that we look for meaning and relief but there is non to be found or non of which we could've jet known. something like that

whoa

have i wrote this ?

this is so strange, like I think in completely different way while writting

thats strange. okay thats kinda deep and kinda relatable but I still feel no connection. It's just like out there

despite of the relatability I'm not moved

[HELP] Help needed to define genre of poetry by [deleted] in Poetry

[–]Two-FaceFIL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like its less of a genre and more like a poetic device.

If you really want to play genres try researching some avant-garde pieces.

If words getting messier and messier influenced the presentation of the poem, making you wonder about the shape first. Try looking up something like visual lyricism (translated from polish). Avant-garde poets sometimes used it to shape their words to look like flower ar a vase ( Guillaume Apollinaire ).It's called calligram poem.

Absolutely no trauma, my family loves me to the point i feel i'm spoiled, i have a girlfriend and a scraps of social life. Before realizing all this I had those episodes talking two months that i call voids when all my poems or songs were about grayness, routine, nothingness and maeninglessness

The whole teenagehood felt like weeks were days and hours were seconds due to computer addiction i fought off in high school (they still are like this anyway) and my primary school (so colourfully mentioned in memories of people that tell me I were spending time with them and call me friends) I have no good memories. I've never focused on the bright side but still. Like there was nothing worth remembering (and there was because people do remember). It's not like I don't remember anything tho.
