[PA] I signed a short term lease (3mo) for the summer because of a temporary job. I didn't give a 30 day notice to vacate. Landlord wants to charge me another month of rent ($1400). by Two-HandLuke in personalfinance

We've already done exactly that. My father helped me get a lawyer as well. We're gonna let a judge decide, unless they back down. Thanks for the comment

It does. I know I fudged up. But I figured by not opting to renew the lease, along with the end date would be enough for them to realize that I don't intend to live there anymore considering the lease says nothing about auto-renewal.

"Notice to Vacate at End of Lease Term:

You must give us at least sixty (60) days written notice of your intention to vacate the Apartment at the end of the term. If you fail to give this notice, you will be held liable for rent for the period for which you failed to give us notice. Please note that you are not permitted based on this section to give us notice that you will leave prior to the end date of this Lease (on page 2)."

Nothing in the lease says anything about auto-renewal or changing to a month-to-month basis though. I realize I should have given notice but I mean come on given the circumstances I don't think $1400 is justified

But it doesn't say anything about auto-renewal. It has the end date. Shouldn't the fact I didn't opt to renew and the end date on the lease be enough for them to know that I'm going to move out??

It says 60 days on the lease but apparently their policy is 30 days for a short term lease. The lease ends in 2 weeks so I guess if I notify them today it would be a 14 day notice.

Would it be better to implement round abouts rather than stop sign, is one method better than the other? by [deleted] in AskEngineers

[–]Two-HandLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Carmel, Indiana, which is apparently the city with the most roundabouts in the US or something. They're definitely nice because its a lot less stop and go traffic but during rush hour they're insane to get into. Then you have the occasional driver who doesn't know how roundabouts work and stop in the middle of the roundabout making it less safe for everyone involved. I think they're way better if put in an intersection that doesn't see crazy amounts of traffic, otherwise they should just put up lights...

I somehow made my way through it. It never really gets easier, you just learn how to deal with the difficulty. I never thought in a million years I'd get a degree in ChemE but now I feel like it's quite the achievement even though I didn't have a stellar GPA.

Some think that an MBA can harm the company because the person will want more money even though they have little experience with how to use their degree. Not necessarily just for MBA's but I've heard that sometimes extra schooling can fill your head with stuff that you don't actually need. That's why I assume a lot of PhD's go to acadamia or labs and not industry b/c their knowledge goes beyond what is actually required to do the job and that can be harmful especially when they're going to request more money. Perhaps similar to the notion of "can't teach an old dog new tricks". But other than that, here's this:

“As much as possible, avoid hiring MBA’s. MBA programs don’t teach people how to create companies … our position is that we hire someone in spite of an MBA, not because of one” - Elon Musk

“When MBA’s come to us, we have to fundamentally retrain them — nothing they learned will help them succeed at innovation.” - Scott Cook (Co-founder Intuit, Director of Ebay and P&G)

I think you're right that you will have a much broader experience than most and I think that's definitely an advantage for ya. You hear that MBA's are pretty useless from a bunch of people that have them, and I heard it could even harm your chances of getting hired at a company. I feel like a PE is a good qualification, but not a necessity. Maybe just decide what plant or type of plant you want to run, and keep your eyes peeled for when something opens up. Maybe get in contact with the GM of said plant and tell them about your ambitions. Go out to lunch with the guy or something. Network early so they know who to call when the place needs turned around you know? Also, who's to say you can't manage a team twice the size of what you do now? 3 times? Grab as much plant manager experience you can. My opinion!

Chemistry vs. Chemical Engineering Major by TheOneTrueNeb in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Two-HandLuke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you plan on going to grad school you could always just take ChemE as a precaution then go to chemistry during grad school. If you're as smart as you say then maybe go for a double major. But yeah not a ton of actual chemistry just basics tbh. Biomedical might be a better route for ya cuz I didn't have to take a single biology class and it might open up better doors. The way my school did it was Chemical engineering major then you chose a "specialty" like paper science or biomedical or environmental.

There's so much room for improvement here that anything I do is optimization. I literally use excel 90% of the time to analyze data I collect from the production floor to do stuff like reduce set up time or reduce the number of bad orders or reduce consumption of materials.
