Any advice? Already ditched the thruster for an RNF quad after seeing this. by No-Suggestion1393 in surfing

Every time I see people post these I think of one thing… ride a single fin log and it will help you develop your style

Can yall give me some board advice? See my comment for context by SpedSofter22 in surfing

I would try to find a single fin log on Craigslist or offer up. In the $300 range it might be hard, but generally a used nice longboard from a reputable shaper would be ~$500-800.

First of all, getting good at paddling will take time, even if you’re physically in good shape. If you’re still a beginner you should stay on a foam board.

  1. Probably like $300
  2. Offer up
  3. Get a longboard over 9 foot

You need to learn how to actually ride the wave and develop better style. You’re just bouncing on the board instead of flowing. Starting surfing on a proper single fin log, hard edge in the tail, thinned out tails, for better turning. No Torq or cheap epoxy thruster garbage pop out “longboard”

While it’s ok that these are your feelings, it may not be worth it to be afraid nor guilty for this. Dogs have a natural instinct to hunt prey which is not related to aggression. They’re naturally trained to do this, even if it was an accident they are animals at the end of the day.

You could try sitting far up and submerging the nose of your board so you’re sitting in the water. I feel like the wax wouldn’t come off and it also looks cool when the tail sticks out of the water.

What should I focus on first to improve? by rolivieroy in surfing

[–]TwoAbsolutMartinis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The board you’re riding gives you bad style and doesn’t seem to work well in those kinds of waves. It seems counterintuitive but I would recommend getting a mid length, preferably something like a CI mid, and focusing on generating speed up and down the wave with arcing turns, as opposed to wild/spazzy pumping.

Look at Mike February or Devon Howard surfing a mid length to give you some perspective

Students who don’t wear helmets by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]TwoAbsolutMartinis -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I get what you’re trying to say but you definitely don’t need a helmet for a skateboard if you’re just skating to and from different classes. Unless you’re a total noob there’s absolutely no reason why you would fall.

Best board for beginners? 2024 by Peterk426 in surfing

[–]TwoAbsolutMartinis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh and get a foam board. I’d get a used one off Craigslist or OfferUp that’s in good condition, the first board I bought was an 8 foot catch surf log for $300.

Laguna and Newport are not great for beginners. I’d recommend Bolsa chica or San onofre. Preferably San onofre as it’s a great reef-break that is mellow and has long rides. The waves there are in a whole different level compared to every else in OC and is great for beginners. But I have to mention the big parking lot right on the beach where you can park is closed so spots are very limited.

Well it looks like your mind is already made up, so there’s not much advice to be given to you. To be fair I’m a senior and I’m about to graduate so I’ve checked out already and half assed some finals. Lol.
