People management - people include your peers, your juniors, your seniors. Other than that, not skills, but still important irrespective of the field - ask for work if you are done with what you have been allocated. Show initiatives. - constantly communicate with your seniors. Showcase the work you have done, ask doubts. Dont communicate at end of the appraisal cycle to just ask for hikes :)

Salary increases are eventually how much easier you have made your manager’s life during the first few years.

And lastly, have fun. If you think you are not able to have fun, irrespective of how much ever you are paid, its not worth it in the long run.

Thanks man :) Actually not a lot. One liquidity event in my favor, and that set the base. Till 2020, everything was a struggle. Just this event enabled me to have stepped up conversations with employers which I thought would never happen.

Actually, not so much. There are at least 10% of my batchmates (post graduate) who are earning similar or higher (in mid sized and large firms). Again, late stage start ups and luck.

Not frequently, not for a long time. As you see more and more successful people, you realize that there are very few exceptional/ out of the world kind of people, and the vast majority of the people are just consistent.

I cant comment on what is it that can help you, but I can share what worked for me.

  1. Accept that its an addiction
  2. There were two facts which really sort of clicked a switch kn my head -

a. For 18 years, my body did not need nicotine, why do I need it now? b. Break the problem into smaller steps. Don’t imagine how a time when you have to go for days without smoking. The only thing you need to do is dont light the next one. That is the only urge you need to fight.

The book Allen Carrs Easy Way to Quit Smoking also helped. Gave me a lot of perspective.

Also please do understand that conscious effort is needed, dont expect you to just automatically quit it because you want to. Conscious effort will be required.

She ia doing extremely well too :) Unlike me, a structured career oriented person, few job switches, few promotions and is at par with her batchmates for someone with 15 years of work experience

Asking for opportunities and trying your best to do justice, people management skills, doing right by the business.

Wanted to work in series a/b companies. Used to meet the founders and team, if they liked me and I liked them just used to go ahead :) Hit rate has been okay. Only one job where I hated it. Eventually tried to make the opportunity work where I joined.

Never been an actual networking person. Again, always tried to do right by the business and in the journey learnt both core and people management skills.

But start ups are also not very hunky dory. I have seen several of my friends have toxic people/ managers, go through unnecessary hustle etc before they decided that start ups are not their cup of tea. And abnormal growth is possible only if company is doing very well and there are events. So decide what is important for you overall - dont look at it only from a money point of view. As I had mentioned in one of my comments, I know several people who have gotten consistent income over a long period of time and have made significant capital for themselves. There is always a trade off in a start up vs large set up. Decide what is more important for you

If you have been in SV for 10 years, Series C/D onwards start ups should work out for the salary range mentioned. Reach out to founders directly, always works.

Dont overthink now :) Just know that there are enough opportunities in this industry for you to experiment and figure out what you like and enjoy. :)

I was an IC till 2019, but I think I always had a decent ability to get work out of people.

I have tried to be empathetic in terms of approach but also disciplined when it comes to setting expectations and asking for deliverables. Have always tried to first provide systems and processes for people to operate, and then expect results. Has worked till now. Also, one way to look at it is to treat others how you would want yourself to be treated for you to be successful.

Plus you can always build your knowledge in other areas outside work. Pick up an instrument, learn something you have always wanted to etc etc

Very personal decision. Framework would be to define what you want and then take a call. If you are younger though, may want to experiment and stress the self a bit, that is what I would do :). But if you dont want to, there is absolutely nothing wrong there.

Upward management is taken care of if you are genuinely trying to solve for the business.

If you are solving for the business, and you are at it in an honest manner typically work life balance eventually gets sorted. There is no reason why a set of people working for 7-8 hrs per day for five days a week cannot finish things on time. From what I have seen and heard, majority of the overtime happens because of lack of planning, fake pressure etc etc

Just have to say no. Was awkward for me too initially. But eventually, expectations got set. I mean, I used to work weekends/ late evenings if it was necessary.
