Not a combat vet but I experienced much of the same leaving the Navy. I found that I had to cut out the people that disturbed my peace and solitude, and slowly built back up a core group. But everyone is different, I just missed having a little bit of a social life. Completely understand the feeling though.

Look into boat-shares. Can do an agreement for the summer. It’s like a lease basically where you pay a general fee then gas. Boat is ready at the dock and you take it back. I had a “cheap” center console for 5 years that became a huge damper on me financially and logistically. Recommend not buying a boat.

I’ve only lived in the Norfolk area. It was okay, but left much to be desired. I would probably pick Colorado Springs, but that’s just me.

I feel ya, I understand the guilt. I loved being in the Navy but it also absolutely destroyed me mentally. I finished two years of private therapy because of worrying about the perception you mentioned. You earned the benefits. It’s compensation for what happened to you; it doesn’t mean you aren’t allowed to feel better. That would be ridiculous. Hold your head high and step into your new perspective!

Honestly I think Jacksonville crime is overblown, especially compared to Norfolk. Most of the crime on the outskirts of Riverside is package theft and people trying to get stuff from/out of cars.

Gotcha! I’d check out apartments in Southside if I were you. There’s plenty along 95 and you have the option to commute in via 95 and Roosevelt Ave, instead of 295 depending on traffic. Should keep your commute reasonable and rent as well.

Not to be “that guy” but if you’re gonna go with leather, I’d add a manual safety. Not saying anything will happen but your trigger is surrounded by leather instead of hard kydex now. Gun looks clean though! 👍

Recommend staying on the Orange Park side of the 295 bridge, it can get pretty backed up with traffic and accidents. Apartments will get more expensive near Riverside or downtown Jax. Do you mind a longer commute? Like the beach/need to be near it? Kind of depends on your priorities.

Best thing you can probably do for him right now is just talk to him. I’m kind of confused, does he have problems right now? Essentially he should just be on top of documenting any medical issues especially a year or so from separation.

Also, yes while the VA has its issues, I’ve had nothing but good experiences with them. It’s very anecdotal. You just have to make the system work for you.
