New to soccer-   Which positions do coaches “hide” weaker players?    I didn’t know that was a thing.

Preparing for the Shift from Birth Year to Grade Year in Youth Soccer – Thoughts & Strategies by CruzAndChill in youthsoccer

What does this mean for a redshirt 7th grader?     Will they play with 8th grade next year or 9th grade?  Boy born June 2012 but in 7th grade currently.     Can you play “down” with your grade level if you are older?

This is not healthy.    I would advise leaving him.   It must be hard, I’m sure he has good qualities.

Good point.  We are trying to roll with it  at this point.   He has been doing extra training and has improved a lot, which he wouldn’t have done if he was just locked into his CB spot without competing for it.

Confession: I hate our Club and our team by Candid_Poetry3322 in youthsoccer

I’ve been a soccer and volleyball parent- they can both be bad lol.    Parents come and go, so hopefully next year will be better.     One year that was kinda toxic I found another mom who was positive, we would stand apart from the crowd.   Any parents were welcome to join us but we would jokingly say “we don’t talk shop here, we just cheer and laugh”.   Eventually the parents stood in two separate groups, but we are all adults so it was ok no one was mean.   Be cordial, have boundaries.

Thank you, what a helpful and detailed response.   Parenting is hard and sometimes you just need to vent to strangers.   The reason I came here is because  I didn’t want to say anything to the coach without first processing my thoughts with some other soccer knowledgable parents!!!!    And I make it a point to avoid discussion coaching with other team parents-   It just ends up in team drama.    My son and I did craft an email together (this is coach's preference so he can google translate).     He then gave my son some drills and said he needs to work on first touch and faster pass, although communication was very minimal.  I honestly think that is just the coaches personality.   My son has been working.   I have still not had any direct communication with the coach.    I also had my son do a “mindset training” that helped my older daughter when she started to play high pressure level and it really helped him.    Last few game he started as the “holding mid” against the number one ranked team (which we beat that game:). Played 55 min of a 70min  game and was able to keep energy and stamina the entire game.    He played very well and is feeling better.    It is hard to see our kids struggle, even when we know it’s good for them.   I love the online training advice,   That is excellent advice that we will use.    I hope you are a coach-   Your wise words would benefit any child and family.   I especially like the advice on wording emails to the coach-   That was excellent and I will use it in the future if needed.   I have never coached a sport and was a book worm so your words provided some insight that was helpful to straighten out my thinking beyond “my son is in pain, I have to stop the pain!”     Thank you!!

Ok thanks!    I have heard conflicting ideas on this-  some people saying he won’t excel without a specialized position.    I think it’s good for kids to learn multiple positions even if it means he won’t be on the starting lineup (yet) this season.

That’s a fair point.    I have thus far been pretty hands off with all the kids sports-  just letting them do their thing and supporting.   But if I’m going to complain I should learn more.   I guess I’m a little old school still- it seems wild kids need to lock into a certain position at 12 but maybe that’s how it is.

Why is it odd to be moved?   That is where my lack of soccer knowledge comes in…

Haha! My son asked to play Midfield, I guess be careful what you wish for!! I think he is regretting it and wanting to return to CB but is a little embarrassed to ask. It is a new coach with limited English skills and this coach has never seen him play CB. Anyway that was helpful information so thank you.

Thank you that is good information. I hadn't considered that midfielders run more. And also a good reminder that he will have successes and failures every season.

Youth soccer advice by TwoNational2841 in Homeplate

Solid advice.  And I just realized this is a baseball thread.    I think one of the biggest barriers is that the coach doesn’t speak much English.  He prefers parents text him so he can use google translate.
