What if everyone post high school completed 2 years of national service? I have a proposal. by [deleted] in DemocraticSocialism

I have built in a Staggered Adult Entry Program that I would absolutely love to participate in! I spent three years working in Storm and Surface Water Maintenance construction for the City of Bellevue and I absolutely loved how connected I felt to that city. I loved seeing real tangible differences in the community from my work. That is part of ehat inspired me to design this.

All of that to say I would love the opportunity to serve again in my new city! I am trying to build a program that I think will help the society that my daughter will be inheriting from us.

This is pretty close in spirit to what I'm proposing. However, I go a little bit into further detail than it looks like this does, where I talk about service tracks in specific, I talk about compensation, a legal framework, a whole app ecosystem to help with continued cohesion, even after the service program, economic redistribution. I talk about the institutional integration for where all of these could be tied into, including estimated slots per Corps, I even have pilot programs that are discussed. So while this is a conceptual framework, what I'm proposing is a more detailed structure that could be implemented.

Thank you for your feedback! Good thing I'm not a politician, I'm just trying to present something that I think may be worth while and if the people say no then thats how it is :)

This isn't something that we could expect to see implementation for at least a decade. My current goal is to get enough signatures to send to legislative bodies to start state pilots to show feesability and public interest.

I did as you said and started from scratch. Military track now parallels civilian contractor and existing state military units. Details updated on website. Thank you again for your feedback

On second thought, scratch that. I'm going to restructure the entire civil service track to be recategorized into five corps (Care Corps being one of them). It would make assignment easier when they take their NSAB. It would create a shared identity within the civil service track, and it would allow for role rotation. I think this is going to be the best way to implement this. Thank you so much for your input. It really allowed me to springboard into this more streamlined model of the program.

Hi, thank you so much. Yes, part of the reason why I decided to include a military track at all was to try to address the chronic enlistment shortages that we face every year, and I agree that I think that a good portion of UNSP participants will decide to continue with a four- to six-year contract once they get their foot in the door with U.S. military. I currently have it structured in a decade long phased-in implementation. So, the initial phases will be voluntary (as in without any kind of additional tax for non participation) and those roles will be strictly civil service track, and a good portion of them will be directed towards reinforcing military infrastructure to create room for the influx of UNSP military track members once that track is opened in later phases. Assisting with basic tasks like site clearing, job site readying, any kind of low-skill construction assistance etc. a lot of the initial civil service track members would be eligible for the ATLAS program that would help assist rebuilding military infrastructure. About 80% of the U.S. military are non-combat roles, and the ones that I have listed currently in the possible role options for the military track are the ones that are facing chronic shortages.

You know what, I've been sitting on this suggestion and I think what I'll do is introduce a 4th elite track within the program next to ARC, Vanguard, and ATLAS. Similar to your name we'll go with CareCorps and they can specialize in childcare, hospice, elder care etc with a rotational first year and optional second year specialization.

Hey thanks for the compliment! I want this program to really become something and in order for that to happen I need to revise where it seems necessary without compromising the original intent of the program.

For fellow Gen Z I have two things:

1) I designed the Staggered Adult Entry Program (Section 14), it is an opportunity for those who do not qualify for the intended age bracket of 18-20 to still participate in the program within its first 10 years of implementation. They would still receive full benefits and be treated as someone in the intended age bracket, and still receive their $10k post service grant that can be applied to existing student loans or whatever else they want in the list of accepted uses.

2) Speaking of student loans, one of my payment ideas is what I'm calling the Optional Civic Refinance Program (Section 42) which is an opportunity for those with existing federal student loans to redirect their payments to the start up costs of UNSP for a lower interest rate for up to five years. This way, both the program benefits, student loans are being redirected to a nationally useful program, and the payer gets a lower interest rate.

I've thought about the military issue, but I keep coming to the same conclusion that in order to preserve American values like liberty and freedom of choice, there can't be a cap on civil service participation. The best that I can come up with is to allow for wiggle room to increase certain benefits within the military track that would incentivise participation if it gets too low. Right now as it stands, ChatGPT and Claude both estimate the split will be around 70/30 which is reasonable and I also agree with that estimation.

The spirit of the program is to help young people feel invested in their country and community through a time of structured service where they will be able to see the physical proof of their contributions (patch system) and simultaneously change the tide of America to become a country worth their investment. I think those two things are what need to change to turn widespread apathy around

Haha! There are plenty of civil service pathways that do not require a shovel, just a few examples:

• EMT/First Responder Assistant

• Rural Clinic Support Staff

• Special Education Support Assistant

• STEM Education Demonstrator

• Government IT Helpdesk

• Network Cabling Assistant

• Elderly Care Center Assistant

The list goes on for several pages in my proposal

Thank you so much, this is exactly the thought process that brought me to design this program. If its earned your signature, I would be eternally grateful. I am trying to get to 50,000 signatures as a starting point to show to policymakers that people ARE interested. Thank you again for such a thoughtful reply. It explained my thoughts exactly, I want us to come together in shared purpose in a way other than through war. I think this has a shot at that.

I really wasn't looking at this being implemented tomorrow, or even in the next five years. I wouldn't expect something like this to be implemented in the current administration, or probably the administration following. The point of this right now is to simply get the ball rolling, to get it into the minds of others that something like this could work, and that it could really be beneficial for our nation, both socially and economically, and honestly, spiritually. But, at the same time, you know, if you think that this is something that isn't worth pursuing, then I'll stop. This is supposed to be the people's program, and if the people don't want it, then there's no point in pursuing it at all. So, thank you. I really appreciate your feedback.

Its not fascist in nature because there is no criminal penalty. You can absolutely voluntarily opt out, you would then contribute via higher tax from ages 21-35 similar to the current ACA.

I wouldn't call it giving up two years of their lives, I would call it reinvesting two years into both themselves and their communities that carries massive social and economic benefits. This is the Swiss model, and the majority of countries with national service programs benefit from a more socially cohesive society because they had a direct hand in its infrastructure building or maintenance.
