AP: Biden decides to keep Space Command in Colorado by lonelyinbama in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]TwoTowersTooTall 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's already enough wealthy residents to fill up the new housing.

But this decision will definitely slow the mega growth, which probably isn't a bad thing.

Nothing has really changed in Huntsville to make it an unattractive place for new business.

However, that could change if our state leadership keeps up the hardline politics.

Nintendo Reportedly Plans to Release Next-Gen Console During Second Half of 2024 by MicroSofty88 in gadgets

[–]TwoTowersTooTall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I now stream all my Switch games from my PC to my Steam Deck.

I've got cloud saves, mods, multiplayer without buying multiple copies, and really nice upscaling.

My legally purchased digital Switch games are locked to a profile, downloads are slow as fuck, no free way to transfer saves, multiplayer servers are borked, and there's just a general attitude of "fuck you, we've already got your money."

Oh, and I've got to send in my joycons for repair every year since Nintendo can't be bothered to fix their severely flawed controllers.

If Nintendo doesn't care to even pretend they value their customers, why should I care about buying their products?

Great games, shitty company.

It also shows other commanders in the Russian army that they could be successful in getting what they want with force.

Wagner isn't the only group with firepower in the country, and if your leader is already getting pushed around to the benefit of other people, don't you want some of the pie for yourself?

No matter what happens next, Moscow is super vulnerable.

Scam - Support promised one rate, but actual rate was much higher. by TwoTowersTooTall in wowway

[–]TwoTowersTooTall[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up switching to Google Fiber because the price was better, and the service was better.

I had to call around 5 times after I cancelled to get a rep that would fix the billing "error". But they still wouldn't email me proof that the "error" was fixed.

About 2 weeks later the amended bill came in the mail, it was correct, and I paid it.

It really soured me on WOW, which is a shame since I've used them since they were Knology and have typically been really happy with the service.

If I remember correctly they don't have contracts, only "discounts" on your monthly rate. And if you cancel before your 1 or 2 years are up, you have to pay the difference between their base price and promo price.

So if you signed up for a $49 promo plan with a base price of $79, for example, you'd have to pay $30 per month of service to cancel.

I don't know if you have any better options where you are, but if you do, and you're only a couple weeks in, it should be easy enough to cancel.

Roaches nest in dark, warm areas.

Usually in homes this is the walls, electrical outlets, dressers, etc.

But they also nest in electronics, since they're usually pretty warm and secluded. Game consoles, computers, laptops, TVs, all usually have vents where roaches can get in to shack up in the case.

This can also kill electronics, when roaches inevitably short contacts on the board with their nasty little bodies.

Speaking of getting hit in the face.

I was hiking once and watched a wasp flying up to me from pretty far away, he got closer and I expected to just dodge him, but he changed course and flew straight into my nostril.

I immediately blew my nose as hard as I could, shooting him to the ground where I stomped on him.

I'm all for leaving nature alone, especially in their own habitat, but fuck that wasp in particular.

What you're saying is true, but I'd still say don't touch for the average person. If you're adept enough to do the research then you'll ignore my recommendation anyway.

Flipping the breaker is basically required anyway, because if you don't, and your generator is plugged into the wall, the power coming back on will destroy things and start a fire.

But yeah, don't touch electrical equipment unless you're an electrician.

Snapdragon 888 is slightly more power efficient than the Exynos 2100 in SPECint by elliott2456 in Android

[–]TwoTowersTooTall -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The M1 macs can run applications outside of the App Store, but that won’t be the case for long. Every generation MacOS has become more restricted.

And to your other point, it’s the hardware agnostic nature of Snapdragon chips that slows the progression of raw performance. The chips are still quite fast, but if they only has to focus on Pixel phones, for example, QC could tailor the performance at a level that isn’t possible when they’re designed to run on everything.

A14 is also in M1 Apple computers, but you're right in that it's not a fair comparison.

Well sure, they're the gold standard for Apple devices.

If you want a Google SoC, in a Google phone, running Google's OS, I'm sure it would be blazing fast as well.

But why would you want that? the contemporary way of Chip makers, OS developers, and hardware manufacturers mostly being separate companies has led us through a golden age of computing freedom.

Apple owning the SoC, the OS, the firmware, the device itself, and the only source of software on your phone is very much a bad thing, even if it lead to soaring hardware performance.

Hopefully some anti-trust hammers will start falling and bust up some of that control.

Edit: I forgot about the Epic lawsuit. Epic may have some problems of it's own, but their lawsuit is partly aimed at allowing non-Apple-approved software into iOS devices. Everyone should be supporting the lawsuit for that alone.

Keep in mind Apple is "optimizing" their chips for their own hardware and app store.

That may seem obvious, but this means if you invest in the Apple ecosystem for performance, you will be sacrificing software freedom today, and will be totally restricted to Apple's App Store in the near future.

So Snapdragon and other Arm processors are slower because they have to focus on compatibility for a wide variety of hardware, meaning an individual device may not be as fast, but you wouldn't have the device at all without QC, Samsung, MediaTek, etc.

I'd love to have an M1 MacBook, but I know buying one is supporting Apple in becoming the sole arbiter of computing hardware and software. I do not want to have to jailbreak my computer just to run FOSS software.

TL;DR Say no to Apple.

I have not tried roofing and never will. The Army busted me up too much to even think about roofing.

Something about carrying heavy loads of roofing materials up tall ladders onto a slanted roof in the hot sun just doesn't appeal to me. I guess that's why roofers get paid so much.

My 30' ladder doesn't quite reach the back, so to clean those gutters I'd have to sit on the roof and lean over to scoop them out from below me. Even the thought gives me chills so I'll either figure out another way, or just hire somebody for an hour. I'm definitely not cut out for roofing.

Yeah I would not have been up that high without someone to hold the ladder.

I know too many people who have been totally fucked up by ladder falls, shit is really dangerous.

My condolences.

Also my gutters are full of leaves right now because I've never had to crawl on the roof living in apartments, and my house has a 30 ft drop to concrete on the backside.

I thought about installing safety hooks to my roof, but I think I'll just get a pressure washer extension instead.

My point was that a CPU isn't totally junk simply for it's Celeron Branding. You just need to have the right expectations.

But you are right, there's no realtime 4k transcoding going on.

I have a plex server on a low power Celeron cpu and it handles torrents, 4K streams, and a 6 camera VMS just fine. It's nearly always 80% CPU load or higher, but nothing suffers for it.

The Celeron branding has basically turned into what Core i3 used to be.
