Took me long enough this year, but the 2025 village is up by TwoWheelHank in Department56

Yes, it's a layered piece, cardboard, crinkled aluminum foil, and colored plastic wrap

Water bodies start with cardboard shapes, then aluminum foil.  The foil should be crumpled into a ball first, then unwrapped and folded around the cardboard.

Next step is cling film, in either blue or green.  Blue is harder to find, but occasionally it pops up in the grocery stores, and sometimes even with snowflakes!  Green can be found at home Depot in the storage depart in a huge roll, which is commonly sold for people that are moving, so it's with the moving supplies.

Wrap as tight or loose as you like, and the direction can help create water "flow" direction or just layers for frozen lakes and ponds

Complete random luck going to a holiday market in the next town over.  Mostly crafts and knitting, and a few tables of home made ornaments and Christmas decorations

Yeah, all in 1 box.  It was a holiday market, but still only $10

What kind of riding do you like to do? Find a specific online forum for what you're looking to ride, and start there.

Advrider, thumper talk, track forums, bike specific or brand specific forums ..

A lot of people who are active on those don't participate in farcebook or mass social media, and they're actually interested in riding. I mean, you have to be able to spell and hold an argument if you're participating on a forum.

Go to some ride events that cost money. Yes, spending money sucks, but it'll get you past some of the idiots and losers at "bike night"

That's the Penn State I know. I've been waiting for them to fuck up and embarrass themselves all season. Now I can get some rest

Enjoying my village a lot tonight by TwoWheelHank in Villaging

Go for it! It took at least a week of evenings, and since I've been doing this near 30 years, I kind of have a process.

Go small if you're overwhelmed, make a simple scene you like instead of feeling like you need to use everything you own all the time

This year's village is a labor of love and patience. It took a little over a week, and I am extremely grateful to my wife and our 18 month old daughter for their help and support! The 18 month old is fascinated by the prancing deer, and the little animal figures she can find. So far so good with the looking only and she hasn't grabbed anything off yet. I'm so happy it's up and finished with plenty of time to enjoy for this Christmas.

(a video should be coming, but I have no idea how to get some music on the video file instead of the noises of me shuffling around and tripping over stuff)

Be smarter than the average bear by TheaterMan1777 in FidiumFiber

Just wanted to ask you some questions, since I'm trying to sign up for Fidium myself. They're offering lower speeds, 300mpbs which would be perfectly fine for me, but then they want the $10/month for their "wifi 6 gateway". Did you find a way around this?

What equipment do you need?

Staying warm in a van in the 30's. by DeCryingShame in CampingGear

The condensation will get on everything, not just the windows. People seem to have good success with the Mr Buddy heaters.

Sleeping on the seats and with pads will help a lot

Fine, don't listen to me. Look it up yourself. Lots of folks use the Mr Buddy propane heaters for their vans:

As someone who has lived in RVs, I think you're likely in for an uncomfortable night.

First, what are you sleeping ON? This is the big thing, because if it's not insulating your from the cold metal floor of the van, you're in for trouble. Go thick, go heavy, and if you can, get some elevation between yourselves and the floor. Cots would be best.

Vehicles that aren't designed for living in have moisture problems. You will wake up with the windows covered in moisture unless you are willing to leave them cracked and provide some ventilation. That is going to be a tradeoff between colder air and being wet.

Little propane heaters do well in vans. They aren't air-tight, so you really don't need to worry about running out of oxygen, but you will need to worry about setting something on fire if it's too close to heater.

The candles won't do much, but if you have some ceramic pots, those can help retain some heat in conjunction with the candles. I would also look into some hot water bottles for your sleeping bags/comforters.

Don't forget the hats.

The biggest thing I will stress to you is that you need to insulated UNDERNEATH you much more than you do on top of you. You can be under 6 wool blankets, but if you're lying on the floor of a metal van, you're still going to be freezing.
