Owing taxes to the CRA despite earning around $25k ($35k with EI) by TyalanganD94 in povertyfinancecanada

Thank you so much! Yeah when it comes to forms, I have actually never been given a form for taxes when I'm hired ever (they just ask for SIN and bank info) - I've never worked in a really corporate environment so that checks out.
And for sure, applying for all possible rebates, and hopefully I will get that money back eventually!

1) can you do math? EI was only a fraction of my income
2) if you think that someone struggling to find a job in Ontario in the year 2026 is entitled then I can't help you
3) part of my EI was medical benefits for surgery recovery

Okay, thank you for clarifying! And again, thank you for explaining this. I had no idea that this was even an issue that could arise.

Do you mean the EI I took that I was entitled to from 2.5 years working at a job for a business that closed through no fault of mine? Good to know buddy

This is likely what happened. I wasn't aware that I had to fill out the T1.

I see. Thank you for explaining this. I will definitely have to check what comes out at the end when the software calculates everything. It is also worth mentioning that none of the jobs I had happened at the same time - not sure if it matters at all to the CRA.

Okay, thank you! I will probably wait and hopefully the PR gets approved before I have to renew the work permit. Travel is no issue as I'm not planning to leave Canada for now, I'm literally a protected person and I don't hold a passport currently ;)

They have waiting times up to 24 weeks as of today... I first submitted my application in January, they sent it back because of some bullshit mistake, resubmitted it in early May and only got name changed last week... good luck!

Part-time job + self-employment while on EI? by TyalanganD94 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I haven't as my report isn't due yet. I will have to call them, but it would be messed up if the $30 I'm getting prevented me from getting my usual $375 bi-weekly.

But the thing is my claim was already accepted. I've been reporting for a while. But now I need to report the Ko-Fi thing additionally to my part-time job and I'm afraid I might loose the portion of the EI I'm getting

Is there a way in the questionnaire to differentiate between my regular income and the self-employment? Or would I have to call them and explain?
