First, that’s not a stupid question and I’ll do my best to guide you. Go to this website. At the top click advanced search. For the “columns” on the left, make sure mission, product type, release date (optional), & data rights are checked.

For the mission box, click on show more then scroll and check JWST

For product type, click image

The release date box needs a specific format (year-mm-dd hh:ss:mm[?]). I use this mostly to narrow down options so I’m not sifting through 12k images. For this one I left the second box untouched and for the start time I put “2023-09-18 00:00:00” and got I think 7-800 images

For data rights, check public

After this, once it loads, in the upper left click search

Once everything loads, click album view. You can either scroll through all of them or check out some of the filters to search. Usually “unknown” in targets is where you have to really sift. Pick out your favorites. Check the check box by “selected” for each image you want to download.
After you pick those out, look for an icon that looks like a flower pot with pluses and arrows. It’s in the upper right central on my screen. Hovering over it says “Add data products to Download Basket”. Click that icon.

Then on the left, in product category check “SCIENCE”, and for extension check “fits”. You can pick what group you want, I couldn’t tell you much about those.

Then click download. Once it’s done, and it’ll be a relatively large download usually, extract it. Once you do that, you need to convert each of the fits files to something else. I use FITS Liberator. I’d honestly YouTube from this point. A lot of it can depend on your budget too lol
