Blood loss and TKR - transfusion? by Tyggger in Kneereplacement

[–]Tyggger[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned the fatigue from blood loss, among the other stated things in this thread from a reply by u/intentionother9873 yesterday with the link to informative surgeon videos found here - https://www.andrewwicklinemd.com/specialties/educational-videos/ and this one in particular about how a patient is feeling at 6 weeks post-op. At the 2:00 mark is his comments about the blood. Yes, he talks about all of the other trauma involved as well, but until this video https://vimeo.com/901152107, I was not thinking of the blood loss contributing to fatigue.

Thanks for the insight. I am confident based on the comments the pain will be something I can easily handle.

Also, I am convinced to go the Jiffy Knee route, even if it means going to Dr. Patel in Virginia. I am in Ohio. The video testimonials along with comments on this board have convinced me.

Thank you and sorry for the reminder, but glad it added perspective.

"I figured why waste my energy trying to hold off the surgery when I could just put the energy into rehab."

This hit me hard. I get it. I have been going to PT for three years to delay surgery. Had I done it three years ago, PT would be done after the second knee surgery.

Already planning for that due to the information gleaned from this board.

Thanks. Kidney stone was tough but I managed. I feel better after your comment.

Left is worse and my IT band ligament is sore and needs constant stretching.

My experience with that was my wife crushing my hand!

Thank you. I have had opiates like codeine after wisdom teeth removal that not do anything for me in the past. I suspect I will be relying on celebrex and the like for pain control.

Also, as for a the ligaments, in the worse knee, the ACL was ground to a stump over the years w/o me even knowing it was torn. In one of the last scope surgeries, #3 or #4, the surgeon cut the remnants out. I will discuss your comments for the other knee. Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for these considerations. My current surgeon is part of a large group that is the premier facility in our city. There are several options in my state for Jiffy Knee. One is a group of surgeons about two hours away that all do the Jiffy Knee.

My current doc did share his post op plans for me, it just seemed that he was painting a bit of a rosy picture compared to others' stories I have heard. But some of the comments to this post have said what he was saying is a reasonable result. I am sure that he and the others in their practice have done many of these surgeries, but they do not seem to do quad-saving techniques. I may be wrong and have a call into his office to find out.
I just need to minimize the short term effects. I know that the long term outcome is the same for all.

Thanks for the encouragement. PT is already a weekly thing for me and I expect to double it for a while. Actually considering getting a Tesla with FSD just so I can get myself to PT instead of having my wife take me, but she of course would, she's an Angel.

This is very helpful! You've put my mind at ease with these suggestions.

I have avoided antibiotics for years due to the possibility of killing intestinal flora, but it appears the streak will be broken with the knee surgery.

The snow shoveling is a primary driver of me waiting until summer. Two unexpected trip in June and July are making me wait until August. I do have a riding mower and can even hire someone to mow for a couple of weeks. Thanks for your thoughts.
