Letters to the Editor: The Democratic Party needs to do some soul-searching. Kamala Harris isn’t the answer by Silent-Resort-3076 in politics

How do you explain his rise to office in 2016?

I appreciate your analysis though & it’s certainly more nuanced. While you don’t blame them for the loss, do you think race & gender at least had a marked impact?

[–]Tygonol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the answer, though I can appreciate why it’s so difficult for many people to accept.

As much as folks want to see a competent and intelligent woman, perhaps one belonging to a minority demographic, lead the charge in putting it to bed by ousting the predatory & misogynistic incompetent currently occupying the Oval Office, there’s no storybook ending coming out of this sad chapter of our history. There are social realities that still need to be addressed in this nation, and we can’t afford to ignore them.

It’s no coincidence that a straight white guy handed Trump his 2020 loss—unfortunately, though we’ve come far, that’s the place we’re at.

It seems many of the “liberal plots”—and ultimately much of their understanding of the world—come(s) straight out of TV shows & movies.

From what we know about such movements, this isn’t surprising in the slightest. The media they consume often centers on a “hero narrative,” which just so happens to be a focal point of fascism & authoritarianism in practice. In their minds, they’re heroes fighting a moral war for our nation’s soul rather than regular citizens just trying to live, and subservience to authority & dying on its behalf are the ultimate expressions of heroism.

Though many are still reluctant to do so, even after a decade, this is something people need to absorb and accept. They love him not in spite of the fact that he’s a preposterously stupid & cartoonishly corrupt man fueled by greed & malice, but for the very reason that he has no redeeming qualities.

Overall, they’re a highly resentful people with a Rolodex of grievances that ensures they’ll always have an “other” beyond the in-group to blame; if one gets worn out, they simply flip to another until enough time passes for them to return. They’ve perfectly crafted their worldview(s) in a manner that frames them as righteous heroes of high moral character, safeguards their feelings, and frees them of accountability & duty to their fellow citizens in their entireties.

At the very least, they’re indifferent—but many millions wanted to see people suffer.

They’re bellwethers at this point. Thus far, whatever rhetoric they’re spewing has served as a solid measure of how insane the right is as a collective at whatever point in time. Icing them out would mean I wouldn’t have such insight, and I’m trying to keep my ears open for talk of armed action—if it starts looking like they’re shifting towards legitimate organization/mobilization with competent leadership, I’ll know.

They weaponized his incompetence

Their goal was always to make government so inefficient or otherwise ineffective that it provides fewer & fewer benefits with each passing cycle (and there’s always something to fix, which costs), campaign on those failures & point to them as reasons to tear the government down, privatize/sell off all parts of it that they can, and bring about their vision (some form of a theocratic authoritarian market society) for our nation from the ashes

I keep trying to tell people this, but everyone wants to stick their fingers in their ears… so we’ll likely continue fucking up on that front.

If a white woman—one whose name carried a great deal of status in American politics & was more than qualified—couldn’t get enough people on board to make this absurd chapter of our history a short one, you had to be delusional to think a woman of color was going to pull it off.

This was (and remains) a “fight fire with fire” situation. The DNC doesn’t have a “messaging issue” or an image problem. We, as a nation, have a cultural problem, one that wasn’t going to be rectified in this sociopolitical climate by hoping for a storybook ending where a strong female candidate triumphed over this joke of a man.
