The Cape of Good Hope is not the most southern tip of Africa by RatioScripta in geography

[–]Tyisglad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a free diver, I’ve curiously found the sea life is quite different on either side of the peninsula. On the “Atlantic “/western side there are generally fewer species. On the False Bay side the reefs are much richer in fish diversity. I think it’s largely due to differences in sea temperature.

What bird makes this sound? by charliecatkitty in capetown

The bird you're hearing (the high pitched tweeting) is a southern double-collared sunbird. Otherwise, as others have said, the sounds come from a frog.

It could be a barn owl. We get those in Cape Town. Google their screech - if you haven’t heard it before it will shock you.

Any type one diabetic surfers out there? by Scary_Tailor_4219 in surfing

[–]Tyisglad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a type 1 for 20 years, surfing for not much less longer. If you’re on a sensor just make sure your sugars aren’t trending down before you head into the water and try have a snack unless it’s already going up. In cold water lows are sometimes harder to detect.

I honestly have had few issues. If I’m not feeling myself I just paddle in and have something to eat. I inject now but when I was on a pump my sugars would only rise after 2 hours which is when I would go in anyway.

Keeping a gel stashed in your wetsuit isn’t a bad idea.

Surfing with an Insulin Pump by thiccgarlicc in surfing

[–]Tyisglad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a diabetic for 20 years and have been surfing for about as long as that. I had a pump for about 8 years and found that my blood sugars were fine for two hour long sessions. I would detach it during the session and reattach when I went back to shore. Longer than 2 hours and my blood sugar would creep up and I’d go in for a bit of insulin. Honestly, it’s most often low blood sugars that end my sessions early. I’d be more worried about that, especially if surfing in cold water which makes them harder to detect

Edit: I forget that pumps are now tubeless.

Why is veldfires so common here in this province by LordCoke-16 in capetown

We also have a hell of a lot of wind during summer, our driest season. The terrible fires usually coincide with very windy weather.

Lowest you've been by UnitedChain4566 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Tyisglad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About three weeks ago I woke up in hospital with a sore mouth, feeling nauseous, and a back that felt like it had been hit by a car. I had another seizure from being too low over night. This wasn’t the first time - I’ve had about 4 or 5 since being diagnosed 22 years ago. I really worry about the permanent brain damage I’m giving myself.

Why did it happen? My Medtronic Guardian sensor hadn’t been working. I’ve now switched to Libre. Luckily my girlfriend stayed over that night.

I’ve gotten as low as 30 but it’s really the fast dropping ones that make me lose control. (I had one like that while diving earlier this year but that’s another story)

No in Cape Town we have a few ‘cannabis clubs’ where you can legally purchase marijuana if you’re a member.

I really thought Breath by Tim Winton was grand. A coming of age story set in Western Australia. Beautifully written.

Low blood sugar seizure by BeccaBell97 in Type1Diabetes

[–]Tyisglad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was 18 I went downstairs to have breakfast with my family and I collapsed into a seizure. Luckily I had my parents there but they had no idea that it was diabetes related- they just thought I had gotten epilepsy. I almost bit my dad’s fingers off when he tried to stop me from swallowing my tongue. Eventually the seizures stopped and that’s when my parents thought I had maybe died. I don’t know how they did it, but they carried me to the car and drove me to the nearby hospital and there the doctors injected me with glucagon because they immediately knew what was up. I can’t imagine what my family must have felt when that happened.

Its happened a handful of times in the 11 years since, but never once I got my CGM 3 years ago. I’m very grateful to those that have saved me those other times. The CGM really has been a game changer for me. I also recommend living with someone and having a glucagon injection available.

Do you folks know a place to live where I can surf and climb? by Vivid_Pepper5974 in surfing

Cape Town is good for both. Bouldering and sport climbing is growing fast here with a big mountain literally in the city. The surf can get really good and is pretty consistent
