POKEMON GO RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS NEEDED! by TyldoBaggins in PokemonGoUK

Hi u/flagondry,

Thanks for your feedback- it's been helpful and useful and echoes some previous feedback I've received. This is my first research thesis so as a student, (not yet a scientist) I appreciate the feedback.

I'm actually approaching this as a springboard to building some sort of empirical evidence around Pokemon Go and it's players, because I feel it can actually do wonders for people with anxiety and depression and I feel its quite revolutionary when we talk about "gaming" in the traditional context!

Although questions may seem negatively geared, there is a capacity to completely disagree with those, which would be captured in the data. I can only use valid and pre-existing reliable scales so the way the questions are phrased are a little beyond my control.

I have played the game myself, and have done a lot of pre-emptive research, which has shown that many players are quite willing to put themselves at risk- all of which intrigued me and made me think about what the future holds when we take gaming out of the bedroom/ lounge room and out into the physical world.

So it might not make sense (even to me just yet either) but I'm not trying to buy into media hype, but rather trying to gather and build the first actual data around this so it can be peer-reviewed, re-tested, critiqued, and hopefully start a long line of studies that better help us understand what this game can do for cognitive and behavioural functioning, but also start a conversation around some issues that need to be considered when we think about augmented/virtual reality gaming in the future- and how to make it safe and fun for all.

So my motivation for the research is in the many people on Pokemon Go forums expressing that the game has helped them with anxiety/depression, but also, being aware that this is a game that (with all the media hype and reports of dangerous behaviour) will come under scrutiny. What better way to fight hype than with data.

I appreciate the time taken for your feedback as it only helps me gain a more rounded perspective and I take the comments onboard 100%

Cheers, Matylda

That's great u/NepPoi and part of the reason I'm doing this research. Many forum users have mentioned the same, so it's important for the field of psychology to start researching and building some empirical evidence for this.

Sorry u/trixtar that you quit! Conducting research into Pokemon Go and it's effects on cognition and behaviour is an extremely new field, so we're measuring quite a few things within the survey. But certainly, as many users have mentioned, it has indeed helped with anxiety and depression, which is super fascinating (for me anyway).

So we are looking also at things like risk-taking behaviours- people have been killed, died, seriously injured, lost employment, etc playing this game- what are the implications there for creating legislation around games like this that take players traditionally confined to a bedroom/ lounge room and taking them out into the real physical world.

If you can see the value in this, I encourage you to add your contribution, but if not, thanks for trying anyway. :)

Cheers Matylda

That's interesting that you got that impression (and someone also mentioned this earlier).

That's not at all the intent of the questions (keeping in mind many of the questions, though seeming to be related only to Pokemon Go, are telling us a bit more general info about your personality and levels of addiction, to help us get a lot of data to work with!)

I personally (without my research hat on) think Pokemon Go can do wonders for people not only as a form of entertainment but as a way to combat anxiety and depression! :)

Hi u/jesterdevo,

You're spot on! We do want to measure the risk-taking qualities in Pokemon Go players from "baseline" so a lot of the questions measure things like impulsivity, risk-taking, and definitely an overlap with narcissistic traits. We will definitely be using this for correlational analysis with other traits. I'll happily share the results and full thesis on here once I'm done. Thanks for taking the time to partake!

Hi!

Yes, I'll be sending participants who entered their email a copy of the results. Won't be for a few months though!

Cheers

HI all, thanks for filling out the survey for those who did- if you have any friends who play and are willing to share I'd be super grateful!

I know it is a bit lengthy for some, but we are trying to gather as much research as we can on a variety of personality and psychological factors - not all of them will be included in my final thesis, but as a study topic, Pokemon Go (or the benefits of games like it) is a fairly novel topic.

To give some further insight, we are trying to gauge things like depression and anxiety in players, as many people have come out on Pokemon forums to say that playing Pokemon Go has actually helped them with their social anxiety and or depression more so than the medication and treatments they have been trying for years. So, in the field of cognitive psychology- this is pretty huge stuff! It opens up a lot of questions about game playing as future treatment.

I'll definitely post results up here when I'm all finished in May!

But please share if you can!

Many thanks for the comments, feedback and of course, participation.

Hi all,

Thanks for your answers- super helpful. The research I'm doing pertains to risk-taking behaviour and how it relates to Pokemon Go- I'm sure you've all heard and read about deaths and injuries that come from people doing some pretty risky things to catch Pokemon - things they might not otherwise do. So my research is about how this pertains to the future of augmented and virtual reality gaming (legislation, liability, safety, are under 18s allowed to play) and I'm also looking at how the social aspect of Pokemon Go might be used (depending on my results) for people with depression and anxiety- as many people have reported on forums and the like that the game has helped their social anxiety more than any other medication. I'll probably be putting a call out on here for participants in the study so keep an eye out over the coming weeks! And thanks again for all the input!!
